Ranka Lee singer-seiyuu Megumi Nakajima is the latest celebrity to lend her voice to a Vocaloid synthesiser, and her “Megpoid” has immediately attracted attention for the outstanding quality of its character design.
The software goes on sale on the 25th of June, so it seems to be too late to change it. It will cost 15,750.
2ch is intrigued, and digs further…
But it takes Pixiv to make it good:
Sadly, it seems this unofficial version will not be supplanting the official version.

Her hair frightens me.
Looking forward to this. I can now finally find out what Ranka Lee will sound like when having sex.
PIXIV = made of win
At least it's better than ZUN quality of drawing.
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU RANKA?!??
that is what happens when people are cheap and instead of hiring an artist they get their nephews to draw things for free
IB these were drawn by Nakajima-san, as part of a contract agreeing to do the voice for this vocaloid.
argh~ no goggle pls, ugly design.
There are so MANY good artists in Japan who would've made this vocaloid justive. I mean alright it's a known mangaka and whatever, but if can't draw moe then let somebody else try.
The unofficial picture is beautiful, makes that hair look a lot better.
what's that?!
haha xD
The character design itself isn't too bad, but the art quality...yeah, not so good.
That second official image there isn't too bad. But the pixiv art still is the best.
Clearly they can hire quality artists, but why not here...?
.....
piece of shit, USA style of drawing Anime, prelude of the downward spiral of Japan at the hands of moralists, etc.
HAHAHA! Looks like a 5 yr. old did that. XD
I call this the "Boyle-effect". DAMN she ugly. But I bet da bitch can sing.
I swear to god if they had branded this and marketed it as Rankaloid, it would have disappeared off shelves faster than cake at a fat camp.
this is a joke right ? ... right ?!
FAIL.
Miku > Megpoid.
In terms of vocal quality: Miku < Megpoid.
Hands down. :)
D:
Dislike the design and drawing besides the Pixiv one....
The artist is the same guy who created Birdy the Mighty. Considering the large differences between the Birdy manga and this, he was VERY drunk when he had to draw Megpoid.
why....why did they choose that artist...to represent such a big figure.....
the art sucks.. PIXIV fan art is really the best .. and her voice sounds really nice.. *listening to Blue Butterfly*
It's basically...older Ranka, in an attire that Sheryl nome might wear, only coloured in her retina kill colours.
At least it's salvage-able by fanworks. Some designs couldn't even do that.
From the demo videos out on youtube, the voice is pretty fail.
Thank god for Pixiv
meh~
Hatsune Miku will always be #1 in my heart, we must be true to our hearts.
The official concept art isn't too bad, but the pixiv fanart looks LOADS better than it.
For some reason it looks like it was made in the early 90's.
I don't like this character design... it looks like a something from 10 years ago. Pixiv definitely makes it better, in my opinion
Why do you care about character design? Isnt the voice quality is what matters most?
It really doesn't look that bad, it's just a bit oldschool. Sorry it's not ~uguu~ enough for you guys.
Hahaha, I was wondering how long it was going to be before this site picked up on the peculiar official artwork.
That aside, her design is rather cute. I like how they kept the Ranka feel but still made her unique.
I can see Popeye-ko...
We need a redesign up in this bitch.
Well hopefully it sounds good....
What happened??? Artists run dry?
C'mon, image 6 isn't THAT bad...
that haruhi makes me lol.
It's China quality, anyway..
You sure it wasn't the Russian one?
Nope, it's China. It was used to promote Olympic 2008..

I'm glad it wasn't just me who noticed that. Was the usual Vocaloid illustrator on vacation?
It's a different company - same people who brought us gakupoid - who licensed the same VOCALOID2 engine from Yamaha. Crypton Future Industries (who made the CV series) aren't involved at all.
Where is her tattoo? If my beloved Hatsune Miku had to suffer the pain and humiliation of having a number tattooed onto her beautiful arm just like some concentration camp victim then at least this misbegotten upstart should at least have to suffer in the same way.
I don't think Gackpo has one either.
Yea that's because the 'poids aren't part of the normal Vocaloid series so they don't get a stamp. Also the 'poids have third party artists not the person who designed Miku and the rest (case in point Gack was by the guy who did Berserk)
Oh! I feel like I should've known that. Guess we just chalk Megpoid's janky illustration up to luck of the draw, then?
Kyun! Kyun!
Kyun! Kyun!
My boifriend is a pilot~
Geez I hope either that price has two too many digits or all of a sudden one dollar is worth 10,000 yen.
QUALITY indeed.
Maybe they think that "moe" is overrated and they wanted to try the abstract route?...
So what would you call this one? POE?
Yeah, it's pretty "poe", as they say in the deep south. :P
