Final Fantasy XIV to be PS3/PC MMORPG

The successor to Final Fantasy XIII has been announced as an MMORPG sequel to the venerable Final Fantasy XI, for the PS3 and PC; the Xbox 360 is notably neglected…
You can see the usual gorgeous CG trailer below:
The CG is of course completely irrelevant to a MMORPG, but there is some gameplay footage interspersed.
The game is set for release sometime in 2010; the direction gameplay will take is not clear, but as it is a MMORPG great change seems unlikely.
The official site is now open, though lacking in anything more than the trailer at present.
It seems a new MMORPG cash cow is just what Square needs, since Final Fantasy XI, released in 2002, may still be clinging on but hardly looks likely to last much longer…

While graphics should never be valued above overall quality of gameplay and design, it is a MAJOR factor in videogames. Why have a good game that looks like shit when you can have a good game that looks good at the same time?!

world of warcraft is the most played mmo, even though it doesn't have a good graphic. also, ff7 and mgs are still the best games around, even from 1997, even with the ancient graphic they have. obviously they have to have something else to it, or else they'll just be good to watch, but no fun to play. As ff12 has been.. but i'd avoid a "i prefer this ff over this one" kind of war, as it was just a joke

Ummmm Kingdom hearts is a Final Fantasy / Disney production. So in order to continue on the KH spectrum you will need new Final fantasy Characters

Once they sort out all the bugs, the xbox360 will have the final gold version, PC will get a free patch download and the PS3 will need to buy the game again.

The *second* MMO in square's history, and the previous one was released 8 years before this one comes out.
Meanwhile they're spewing out remakes and spin-offs faster than anyone can keep up with.
For some reason, the original Secret of Mana opening still seems to be more beautiful to me than this admittedly more gorgeously rendered trailer does.
Maybe it's just nostalgia...? I feel like the new Square games are starting to lose that legendary depth to them they used to carry in a lot of their games. Square seems to have so much money and manpower nowadays, but that focus on the simple elements that made a lot of their games feel classic and memorable in the first place seems to have gotten lost somewhere along the way, replaced by a commercial money-making machine.
Sony's whole conference was wonderful. I would have never imagined they had so many bombs to throw.
