K-ON! otaku have been busy scrutinising every scene of the anime in case it holds some unnecessary product they can rush out and buy en masse, and one of their discoveries has been a profusion of photographic references used to create the settings in the title.
Their detailed comparison images leave little doubt as to the real world foundations of K-ON!:

It's crazy ..... but good
Since all those stuffs existed in real life, can i find that yellow fluffy thing in 3rdpic,4th row,1st too?
it seems like more and more production companies nowadays are using real world sceneries as backgrounds in their animes.
i was just wondering why. is it easier compared to a totally made up background? maybe less creativity needed? or maybe its more appealing to fans using real scenes? more technique (in terms of drawing) involved?
I know what you mean. It almost feel cheated that they basically traced real world photos. However it is nice that we could visit these place. Is a real mixed feeling.
Just shows to prove that Otaku only know anime from a consumer point of view. Using real-world references has been used for years to speed up production and not just in anime.
I'm not too sure about the one with Mio with the guitar and the Music store one... they could be from anywhere.
these comparisons are always fun, it almost makes it feel as k-on were real. As do all the other comparisons too.
i rem watching older animes that have boring backgrounds w/ little detail... using RL as anime inspiration imo makes it more believable.
Where is that located? Can we google streetview it?
First and third compositions pic were convincing.
Second one could mostly be bull though.(set aside one or two)
It's amazing how photo realistic the backgrounds are done. O_o
You had best be trollin nigger.
This is so great, I've been living in Kyoto for 3 years right next to the K-On! girls and I never knew! This is my favorite music store, the University of art and design, the Kamo river, the McDonald's down my street, ... And my bus stop !! \o/
why can't American cartoons can't copy many familiar landmarks like Japan?Does it means they'll lame-o?
Many do. Any cartoon that has an image of the statue of liberty or something will have used a photo reference.
Do you have a source for those pics. I'd like to head to kyoto and find the same places if possible.
try google maps street view for kyoto. some of them will be easy enough to find if it's possible.
inb4 this starts pilgrimages bigger than Lucky Star
Shows the dedication of the otaku community, for them even the tiniest detail matters
Damn! There's no McDonald's in the 2D world!
if they had mcdonald anime girls wouldnt all be so skinny and well built
Yeah, but it looks like they copied Mos Burger. Which is better.
but hey, no copyright infringement either.
Anime is like Japan without the Japanese people, best of both worlds.

ehhh... -1 for you
I dont know why, but it kinda makes me smile when I see these kind of pictures :3
I like the photo comparrison too actually, to know that the places really existed is kinda cool.
Lucky*Star was set in my friend's old school.
A normal comment...and a normal response!? THIS IS MAD-
I should go visit all those locations, but then I would probably start humping the floor and every other place they touched
Kinda brings new meaning to the phrase "worshipping the ground they walk on", doesn't it?
I wouldn't do that.
Japan's soil and land has an infectious virus that "only" should be spread throughout the Japanese people only.
That school is gonna get attacked by luscious otaku rapists.
Otaku are luscious now?
On a side note, 3D Mio spotted on youtube!

8 string bass ftw
well putting aside the transvestite goodness *shudder* he plays a decent bass
What are you talking about? Freaky-tan is awesome!
Kind of ballsee of him.
uuuhh...cant artists do anything BY THEMSELVES?!
I'm sure they plagiarized like hell in High school/College.
They must have some limited imagination.
Doesn't it make it BETTER if the character's surroundings are based on the real world? It means the girls people idolise so much seem less of an unreachable fantasy.
