The convoluted politics, distinctive personalities and bloody warfare of Japan’s Sengoku Jidai period, the centuries long period of civil war only ending in the 1600s, has long been a staple of Japanese fiction.
Naturally, this includes games, which have seen a variety of depictions of the top personalities of the age emerge, a generous selection of which you can see compared above.
Some characters, much as with the Sangokushi saga, clearly have well established depictions, though even these do not stop character designs being freely gender swapped…
I saw a similar picture once, only the one I remember included a Koihime Musou column, which is clearly missing here.
Where is my Mitsunari? D:
I for one never understand gender swapping? Why do you want to see a guy turn into girl?
I honestly don’t care that the character is supposed to be historically male, I just ignore that. I just see them as new, different characters… or like females pretending to be or cosplaying as historical figures. I guess the creators of these things come up with doing something like that so that they can more easily set up interesting characters and settings or something.
I really don’t think people see this as gender swapping like what happened in that game “Xchange”.

LOL at Yoshimoto’s Sengoku Rance.
