A man has been arrested after decapitating his 10-year-old granddaughter in order to appease the ancient gods and grant a bountiful harvest.
The elderly man, a rural resident of a tribal area of India’s Orissa state, planned to sow seeds mixed with the girl’s blood, thinking this would undoubtedly confer a good harvest.
Villagers had found that he cut off the girl’s head with an axe whilst nobody was around, and collected up her blood into a pot, which he mixed with seeds.
He was soon turned over to police by the villagers, and confessed to the slaying.
