K-ON! Dominates Charts, Otaku to Blame?

k-on-bu-dont-say-lazy-cover.jpg

The OP and ED for Mio oppai anime K-ON! were recently released as singles, and to no one’s surprise both have proved hits, coming in at third and fourth in the national Oricon charts. Both also seized the top two positions on Amazon’s rankings.

The ED tune, Don’t Say “Lazy”, came in at number three, whilst the OP song “Cagayake! GIRLS” took fourth place.

k-on-otaku-maniac-shopping.jpg

As you can see from the above image, with one otaku alone buying no less than 11 copies, we must wonder how much of this success is due to musical value and how much to canny marketing on the publisher’s part, though admittedly in the case of otaku it is more akin to shooting fish in a barrel

You can pick up the CDs here and here. Anyone buying more than 11 is invited to post pictures on the forums.

Haha and I wonder what the guy will do with each copy? I think he already has the purpose of each planned out already.

Personally though, I think the songs are pretty good. Especially since the anime is based on music/bands, it is only logical that the CD's will sell pretty well as opposed to the normal anime OP/EDs.

I totally love the sound of the group "Sphere". Minako Kotobuki & Yōko Hikasa sound sweet! - The music is actually 'catchy'- I love the video of the girls singing "Future Stream" (actually the opening to "Hatsukoi Limited")- You can see them 'in motion' and get a sense of their personalitys

My favorite 'New' Sphere song is "Happy Sorry!"

I would totally Buy this if I was in Japan but I am more interested with the girls as a group ("Sphere") cause I can tell whose singing what.

Nice catch! I was thinking most of these otaku purchase mania are probably staged so that they can resell the goods afterward(or publicity stunts by the vendors themselves). But this one looks like a real deal.

Still, if this guy had saved up the money from buying the 10 extra CDs, he could have gotten more merchandises from the show. There is no scientific explanations for such behaviors.

There's also the question of why 11? I could theoretically see 5, since that matches the number of insert cards (you could have a CD for each card - woo!), but 11?

the special edition came with 4 extra covers + 1 for the cover it came with and 1 for normal cd cover(each character is portrayed on each), so 6 copies made the most sense but the guy bought 11 special edition copies and switched all the covers to mio

Wait, what does Kadokawa have to do with any of this now? Also for an Otaku bolstered duo of singles, Don't Say Lazy and Cagayake Girls leave a lot to be desired with their 2nd and 4th place rankings respectively (I go by Oricon for by units sold rankings).

As for the songs themselves, both are tolerable, but also a long way off from earning a place on my permanent playlist.

Finally anybody that buys 11 needs to manage their finances better.

Because of all the ads from them to buy the CDs? And I am not really suprised. It's not like this is the first time a person buys something this much. Not that I am saying it's normal, but you made it sound like it's something rarely happens in Japan :3

Errr....actually, I was anticipating DSL getting the number 1 slot and Cagayake Girls getting the number 2 by a wide margin considering how crazy otaku usually go in buying these moe anime related singles. Don't know how you got the opposite impression from my post, nor how I would think this is a unique phenomenon? :/

It is _extremely_ rare for an anime song to get #1 place on the Oricon chart because they have to contend with "real life" music.
AFAIK only the Macross Frontier OST 2 CD got #1 in recent years.

I'm not sure I like the ED. Mio is fair waifu material, but the moe stuff can get overboard. The OP doesn't interest me much. The sales are pretty much otaku driven, don't think it has much to do with the music. The episode content fairly reflects that. Regarding other music related series, I'd say Nodame is well deserving of praise. I don't know how well Beck exactly did, but I guess enough to get a mention.

Too bad both songs have the anime opening syndrom: First 1:30 are awesome followed by 3 minutes of random tone and tempo changes that end up as disharmonious and unenjoyable crap. Cagayake! GIRLS is the worst example of this since Naruto's CLOSER.

And let's not started about the uninspired B sides...

    Comment by Kaioshin Sama
    19:46 24/04/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Hmmm...I wouldnt say either had much in the way of tempo changes. As for the B-Side tracks, they had some potential, but could really have benefited from some tempo changes. Kind of a waste, but really when you're producing a pair of singles that have a tie in with a moe-centric anime that is a guaranteed hit with Otaku I don't think you're really concerned about trying to make said singles stand out. They knew these were guaranteed top 5 placers regardless of what they did with them.

is "Happy Sorry" a B-side?. I actually like it. Not more than the main OP. To be honest my least favorite song (not by much) is "Don't say Lazy" ED. I like the animation but the song does nothing for me. My fav is "Future Stream"- I love the melody.

I like "Don't say Lazy" the most though... different people likes different stuff. I also like "Cagayake! Girls" music, but not the vocal. As for the other tracks.. I don't remember the title, but I like one of them.
