I know that as recently as the 19th century, in the united states there where no age of consent laws. I recently read a book about the civil war, and in it a confederate solder (who was at least 20) married a girl who was 12. Also, as recently as the 1930s in some rural areas it was considered okay for 12 years olds to marry 20 year olds. Human nature and physiology hasn't changed much in the last century. Just laws and politics.

I would have to agree, at least on this point. I believe in Louisiana and maybe a couple of other similar states. They still have Similar laws on the books at least. practiced or not. Though they usually have parental consent, nonetheless it remains.

Then there's your claim that it's really all ok, since she can petition for a divorce when she hits puberty. First, I'd like to insult your intelligence for believing a society that would allow a little girl to be sold into a marriage would give that same girl, when she's only slightly older, even rights to actually divorce the guy. I mean, the girl is guaranteed to get the divorce; yeah, she can petition for one, just like her mum petitioned for the girl to get out of the marriage - tell me, how did that work out?

Then we should consider what would happen to the girl if she did get the divorce. That kind of society very, very highly values and emphasizes a woman's virginity and purity. If the girl goes for a divorce after she hits puberty (and therefore, after her 'husband' has forced himself upon her) then who'll want to take her? She won't be worth anything since she'll no longer have her virginity.
