Sengoku jidai anime Sengoku Basara recently aired, and observers soon noticed some very strange differences between two of the broadcast versions.
Rather than the usual censorship differences, it appears for some inscrutable reason broadcasters CBC and TBS have each acquired their own not so subtly different version of the anime…
2ch provides a detailed comparison below.
CBC is on the left, TBS the right:
Just what might be the cause of this? And which will become the canonical DVD version?

wow! TBS version is more life-like while CBS version is more anime-ish...they have enough time to make two versions? now that's hard work! congratulations!
I think the CBS version was the early, unfinished release of the anime... And they bought it half price. XD
I think it's the other way round... The anime's light funny characters are what make the show enjoyable. The more realistic drawings seem too serious and I can't imagine the comedic interactions as being so hilarious.
I prefer the CBC one actually.. The TBS one seems to have too many lines on the face.
WHAT'S THE MATTER?
TOO MANLY FOR YOU?
nah, I actually liked the CBC version, TBS is good, I watch that if I am looking for a serious episode where everyone is like "OH SHIT PLOT TIME"
know what it needs?
They need to let them unleash their fucking bankais. or something like that. (Basara)
I dunno which one is better. The TBS looks more realistic but distorted dirty while the CBS one has less details but its cleaner.
I doubt.
I don't see where the point is in making two slightly different versions with no real selling point (as in no nipples vs. nipples or no pantsu vs. pantsu), and you have to animate it twice. Wasted money?
Also, I think the faces in the TBS version look a little bit more manic.
The point for the animators is - to look stupid in our eyes.
But the more work the animators do the more money they make (depending on country it was animated in...)
So one version doesn't like scars? Ah well
ok now thats wierd ><
I guess TBS could be the dvd version
That's what I'm thinking. More detailed drawings normally come with the DVD version. Or they could just be messing with us for no reason.
TWO version/episode in each DVD volume, then Each volume can consist less episode hence more DVD volume will be release...haha...GREAT strategy...
Great strategy for them, bad for us.
They probably got sent different versions. :D
Dunno, TV stations(especially their technicians), are notorious for screwing things up. :/
They obviously got sent different versions - the issue is why they were made in the first place?
Maybe they were making the DVD version simultaneously with the broadcasted version?
Maybe a lot of anime have different versions we dont know? I mean, not the whole episodes, just some scenes animated several times, you know, like takes in filming.
that would be time consuming...
They amped up the testosterone in the TBS version, it seems. How mysterious.
If I didn't know any better, it could almost seem like IG is purposefully airing a worse version with a "fixed DVD version" already done, and accidentally sent the wrong one to TBS.
weird... whats the purpose?
is it just me or the TBS does look kinda more naruto-ish
No, you're just dumb.
nyoron <: 3
This must be indecisiveness at its best. Or perhaps its worst, depending on how you look at it.
I can just picture the company being split in half regarding the more likelike, facial wrinkles that TBS showed, and the more conventional anime style that CBC has, and they decided to waste time doing both.
I'll speak for what I believe is the general consensus of animu fans everywhere: No one would have bitched if you just settled on one.
What? One manlier version..?
its the GAR version
TBS is definitely the GAR edition.
I wish there was K-ON! GAR edition :\
With Mio picking up the Goldion Hammer and turning everything into light?
an expensive marketing scheme...... see if it'll work...
Can anyone think of any point to doing this? I'm rather confused. =/
The only -possible and reasonable- thing I can think of (although, I admit, it is unlikely) is that two versions were made so that die hard fans would buy both versions of the DVD (that is, of course, assuming both get a DVD release) thereby increasing DVD sales without all that much extra work. After all, I can imagine that they aren't complete reworks, rather just a bit of details is added to make it look more manly. If someone told me this was their reasoning, I wouldn't believe them, but it's the best I can come up with.
Wth?
I know it's not unusual for certain things to be altered depending on when/where they're airing to better suit the audience (though I'm not sure I've ever seen it done with anime.) That said, though it's a rather out-there idea, I wonder what the viewing demographics of both broadcast channels are. Are they different? Perhaps they were altered to make a better appeal?
The most obvios reason - some dumb dude just fucked up.
Even though TBS has more details, I like CBC version better. TBS looks too generic samurai anime style. I hope fansubbers see this and decide to use CBC raws instead.
same, i prefer the CBC version over the TBS, though the TBS version does make a nice GAR version
Less detail=better visuals? Haha.
less is more
Jst like DFC...?!
Don't compare DFC with the lack of detail on this scenes. DFC is always flat and smooth, but it can be unique. You just need to look closer.
Either way, you'll be wrong not to go with TBS's.
CBC is by far superior
By not being GAR? That's what's considered superior nowadays?
lol masamune <33333
the TBS one looks seriously fake
The Way I like it is:
Red Team - CBS
Blue Team - TBS
I see Oda Nobunaga. >;3
CBC FTW, clearly.
Perhaps they tried to make a "Standard Definition" version and a "High Definition" version. Why? Too much free time, I guess...
It's too awesome to show wrinkles on regular television...
It should be censored..
