Japan’s leading video sharing site NicoNico Douga has just launched a porn video service in cooperation with major Japanese online AV distributor DMM (Digital Media Mart).
The videos include a large number of typically explicit AVs, and are offered on the same nicovideo.jp domain as Nico proper, albeit on a “channel” sub-site exclusive to DMM.
The catch is that no video sharing is possible at all (everything is uploaded by DMM), and the site is in fact a pay site. ¥525 a month allows users to view the videos, which appear to consist of a moderate number of clips (100 to start), each no longer than 5 minutes.
Comments are however still enabled, so it is possible to see the usual tawdry AV action obscured by strings of “wwwww” and amusing banter as to how ugly the performers are.
You can see their front page here, though only a single non-explicit video is provided to non-members as a rather unconvincing sample.
DMM are notionally operating the site, so Nico does escape charges of directly running such a site, not that this generally bothers Japanese companies, who tend to be able to engage in such business quite freely without undue complaints from the public.
The offering is not extraordinarily convincing (in fact there appear to be dozens of entirely free sites with superior offerings), so it remains to be seen how well it will do. Whatever the case, it is a surprising and unexpected development in Nico’s desperate (but lately increasingly successful) search for profitability.
This does raise the interesting question of how explicit the already at times erotic content on the main Nico site will be allowed to become.

Reply to above. Issue isn't the moralists per se. If it was set up like this then youtube would be blocked pretty much everywhere, reducing traffic signficantly.
Same basic idea though. If they put it under their main domain name then they'd find themselves quickly shrinking due to filter associations and the like.

It's not that unusual. This is politics 101:
1. Make laws that benefit corporations and banks.
2. Don't make laws that upset the people.
3. Do publicity stunts in an effort to be reelected.
Don't forget we are talking about 20th century laws here. There is no way that kind of law could be passed in modern Japan, even if it didn't exist in the first place.
But dwelling on sensitive topics like pornography isn't going to win over many voters. So long nobody pressures the government to change the law, it's going to stay the same.
