My cousin is Malay (born in, lived/lives there).
She grew up like a typical American schoolgirl, listening to boy bands and interested in fashion and hanging out and changing her nickname to what was trendy at the time and etc.
Only the older, Muslim(?) generation are religious and cover themselves up with sari hoods and stuff. Malay are sort of like a mix of Chinese and Indian, too, so there's a lot of culture going on in the one place.

I don't feel that only older generation are what you call religious. There are still lots that stick to the religious values. You are mistaken the definition of Malay Muslim with the minority extreme ones.
