Chinese Job Seekers Turn to Plastic Surgery

The worsening economic conditions in China have seemingly forced many new college graduates and the recently sacked to turn to plastic surgery to gain an edge in the increasingly competitive job market.
Chinese unemployment rolls have surged with millions cut from factories dependent on dwindling foreign exports. Further, 6.1 million students will graduate from college or similar institutions of higher learning, a nine percent increase from the previous year, almost all of whom will naturally be entering the job market.
While Chinese law forbids job discrimination based on race, ethnicity, sex or religion, no similar legal oversight covers physical appearance. Chinese employers routinely specify desired height, weight and other physical requirements.
Applicants for a nursing position at the Beijing Modern Women’s Hospital are expected to be taller than 5 feet, 2.5 inches and have “acceptable facial features.” A recent governmental posting in Hunan province even required its applicants to have “symmetrical breasts”, for reasons we can only guess at.
The most commonly requested surgical procedures include raising noses, cutting eyelids (a popular procedure in much of East Asia and beyond to acquire a more “western” look) and softening angular faces into the rounder shapes commonly prized in East Asia.
Procedures that lighten the skin are also highly desired as the Chinese consider lighter skin more delicate and desirable than darker shades. Lighter skin also happens to be a characteristic of the dominant Han ethnicitiy.
Some however feel that such minor surgeries are not enough. A commonly held perception by many Chinese employers are that shorter workers are less healthy and capable than taller ones.
Such perceptions have encouraged many Chinese job applicants to undergo leg lengthening surgery. Leg lengthening surgery involve doctors breaking the legs of their patients in order to insert steel pins in their bones.
Such surgeries typically add 3 inches to a person’s height, but are fraught with dangerous potential complications.
Despite such risks, business has been booming in Chinese plastic surgery hospitals. Nearly a dozen leading Chinese hospitals reported strong business since late last fall, commencing around the period when the global financial crisis began to take its toll on China’s economy.
Many Chinese job seekers have decried the emphasis on physical appearance, calling such requirements absurd. However, such sentiment has not stopped them from getting procedures done in record numbers.
One recent female graduate made this candid assessment: “They may not say it openly, but during the process they will pick the prettier one.”

It's sad how shallow society is. I can't believe how some people still believe outer appearance = personal worth. I can only imagine what will be happening in the future with the advancements of genetic manipulation.

WTF it's a job that doesn't require looks at all.
And somehow the "symmetrical breasts" part is more offensive than the "acceptable facial features" part.
it seems to me that during ancient times, hundreds of years more or less around christ, the chinese realm adopted a merit system to select personal staff, using tests open to the whole public.
they now changed a bit the requirements from brain to exterior..
quite hard to read all the article, though: i hate even reading about this kind of medical operations...
Are they using plastic surgery to get jobs as animators/artists, voice actors, or game designers? That's the only reason I could see why this is fitting news for a site that claims covers such things.
I guess if you really want to stretch it, this could be H; however it neither mentions them getting into porn nor does it have before & after pictures of symmetrical breasts.

The complaints over which stories "Fit" the site are really getting old. This kind of thing was here from the beginning, not like it's something new at all.
One of the first articles I remember reading here was some man trying to hump a sewer grate or something(And I think that was in China), which was in like, July or something.
Get over it. Sankaku is going to have odd stories from around the world, along with the general H, and Anime articles.

I had difficulty finding an appropriate image for this article and asked Artefact to find one. Had I found one that showed before / after shots of symmetrical breasts, rest assured that I probably would've used it.
I couldn't find any such images, aside from standard oppai charts...

If you have to compete with millions of A++ grade graduates from elite universities, where everyone is striving for whatever job they can get, then the selection will be only based on looks and luck in the end.

It's not like you'd find an extremely ugly secretary or nurse (old doesn't count) in any country. Getting surgery is kind of extreme though.
The only jobs where looks don't really matter are ones that require higher education and doesn't require having to sell shit.
Lets face it no matter how much you think
appearance < personal worth in the end,as long as we are human we (un)consciously end up choosing our partner or in this case employee the better looking 1(as long as you have a choice...of course).
I just happen to play the visual novel Saya no Uta yesterday, although quite twisted and weird the VN show some of the ugly face of us human.
