Toei, for reasons which well might include Gonzo’s impressive success with Strike Witches, has announced at the recent Tokyo International Anime Fair that they will also work on a new project that involves mecha-musume, tentatively entitled “Robot Girls”. While Gonzo’s strike witches was based upon World War II planes, Toei is banking on moefying their extensive line of mecha.
This would include such legendary mecha as Superhuman Combat Team Baratack, Magnerobo Ga-Keen, and Gaiking.
This of course raises the question of whether this can match the success of Strike Witches?
The combination of pantsu, a diverse cast of yuri girls, and a contrived martial storyline and setting filled with careful WWII references seems to have caught the imagination of viewers, or at least caught them by something else.
It remains to be seen whether a franchise lacking all of these elements can expect the same success.
Via Japanimate and Moon Phase.

There loli so ill watch it regardless
If you aren't buying the DVDs, then you are irrelevant to Toei.
My irrelevants is over NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!
second.
Word Icy-nee-san could not have said it better myself.
I demand MS girls included :p
Could be cute.
Will there be a nopan?
Better be if Gonzo wants it too be at all successful like Strike Witches.
I can already see a disadvantage:SKIRTS.
They should only wear pantsu-like things!
Heh, even if I wanted to watch this, the term "rip-off" won't escape my mind so easily, ruining my enjoyment of lolis......
wwaitaminute, is that even possible?
looks like FAIL
second.
Thrid on this
fourth...
fugly, they need to go back to drawing board.
Agreed...
Their faces don't look cute at all in my standards...
Also they all are like Medabots fully-flesh-covered version...
Random anime is random :\
I'm ain't going to watch it just for lolis... yeah yeah, I'm a failure as lolicon, I know... >_>
Then I think I'm a failure as well.
I don't really like the characters...
Actually Sky Girls was the first to based on Flying loli's
Exactly my thoughts. Alot of people seem oblivious to that series and act like Strike Witches created some sort of new genre/craze.
End of the day, throw in some action, a decent cast of characters, lolify them, and add some nudity = lots of sales.
I doubt Toei will go down that path though as they aren't as desperate as Gonzo.
'Flying lolis' have been around far longer than Strike Witches or Sky Girls. Mecha Musume originated with the Gundam Girls, and the phrase 'mecha musume' originated with Humikane Shimada (who provided the character designs for both SG and SW, and the story SW). While we use Mecha Musume as a generic term for any personified machine, in Japan it's used to specifically refer to Shimada's works.
tl;dr neither franchise was the first.
Ya rly, Anon is 100% correct.
Robot anime fandom has been producing characters essentially identical to these for decades. The boom in Shimada's works is probasbly just one contributing factor to the decision to make official girl versions of these super robots. Buso Shinki is of course another successfully merchandised implementation of the concept.
Also, "MS Girls" creator Mika Akitaka and Keroro Gunso creator (and general fanservice master) Yoshizaki Mine have been dividing the work between them of a new Gundam-based mecha-girl every month in Gundam Ace for several years now. Several of Mine's contributions to Gundam Ace's "Gundam Fix Galution" / "Zeono-Musume" series have been produced as resin kits, and he sells doujinshi-style collections of related illustrations that didn't make it into Ace.
Mechanical loli eh?! Tsk tsk..
They should go for more loli representations. Have loli-Beethoven, loli-Bach, loli-Vivaldi and loli-Bortniansky in an anime. I would watch that.
fail
That poster is a misprint. It should have said 1989.
Doesn't look very promising.
Exactly my thoughts. Weird character design for todays standards. I don't like them at all, they seem to loli too me and with legs like toothpicks.
What's more sad for me is the fact that I've seen all the shows these "reimagination" (let's call this ugh thing for me like this) are based on, and they all sucked (save Gaiking I think)...
Looks fuckin retarded..
+1
Petit Roid: The Animation
Would love to see that.
HELL yes.
I'll be watching it. Last year has made me so gay for cute headphone-like things, lolis on skies and robots and their designs (i.e. I watched Strike Witches and Casshern Sins, loved both) so I'm already hyping over this. It definitely won't be as popular as strike witches but it looks more retro, and elevens love retro to no end. Like that M-letter on blonde girl's chest. Yatterman, anyone?
Forget fanservice. Those mecha designs are hideous. They could be nude and wearing that and I still wouldn't like it.
I don't know ^_^ that is a little harsh.
need a mazinger-z tan o.o
WTF! my dear robots of the series of my childhood become lolis.
Fail
I had the privilege of seeing "El festival de los robots" and I would not like to see something bizarre as "el festival de las lolis" xD
what is the opinion of Go Nagai about this?
who's next?, Gekkou Kamen transformed into a Loli?
This "copy" overall looks not-so-good, but I think i'll be watching it because at least they wear semi-logical battle suits (seriously, who goes to battle just with a shirt and PANTSU, or a swimsuit? Ridiculous.)
Little girls, that's who.
+Win
Sorry Toei, fail.
Excellent! Now I can finally see a loli with a Rocket Punch!
Falcon Punch?
Would like to add one but not intended to you nor to Firetribe...
Failcon PUNtsu?
Man, look at how hostile everyone's getting.
i say they should do a new gundam series with moe-gundams :3, i know we would all watch that
MS-Shojo animated?
Well, if Toei succeed with this Title, I bet Bandai will make it too.
Just fund it.
Those are the most generic robot designs I've ever seen.
Hey, if they wear panties, don't use their legs to fly, and don't have cat ear.
Then this perfectly legal and not copying strike witches.
Agree...
Gundam Mecha Musume likely fits it...
