Ladies Hounded From Hanami for Wearing Kimono

enemies-of-the-people-wearing-kimono.jpg

A pair of ladies, apparently a mother and her daughter, thought they would take a commemorative photo under the blooming sakura at a Chinese park whilst tastefully attired in kimono, but were soon thronged by a jeering crowd who ordered them out.

The unhappy crowd formed about the would-be hanami-goers, who were both Chinese, patriotically shouted “Get out, Japanese!” and “Stop taking photographs wearing those!”

Cowed, the pair quickly moved off, changed to some less outrageous costume, and left the place.

A reporter caught up with them, and asked why they would do such an unpatriotic thing; “We just wanted to take a photo in the clothes, because they’re quite beautiful, that was all” replied the humbled pair.

A young lady who witnessed the ruckus remarked “Japanese clothing certainly is beautiful, but it’s Japanese isn’t it, so people who see it are naturally going to be offended. Those two were a bit strange, weren’t they?”

Via Heaven.

Taking one’s pet daughter for a walk, beating one’s errant wife in the street, or skinning and eating people’s cats may pass without confrontation in China, but clearly an act as foul as wearing Japanese clothing cannot be tolerated.

The two ladies are Chinese, and the people who hate the two knew the fact.
I think that this is the reason why there exist racism in China.
They hate not only Japanese military but also all of Japanese things even if those are purely cultural things.

A lot of Japanese deny what Japan did in China in WW2. Most Japanese still enshrine those war criminals in Yasukuni Shrine as "heroes": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasukuni_Shrine#Enshrinement_of_war_criminals

That's why we still can't forgive Japanese. Don't tell me the German and European crap. If you were a Jew, tell me how would you feel if German still enshrined Adolf Hitler as "a hero of Germany"?

Yeah it is rather distasteful. Though, to be honest, I think the Japanese have too much ultra-nationalism due to the restrictive nature of the McArthur era constitution. But anyways, It seems neither China nor Japan wants to move on , so Id say let them continue their quarrel with each other. If they dont want to act like mature nations, then let them wallow in their own filth, figuratively speaking.

Japan did what it did up through World War II because it was pretty much a facist and imperialist country that would harshly silence dissent from its own citizens. It isn't now. Things got better.
Mainland China is now a nation that acts pretty much facist and imperialist up to a point, only they claim not to be on account of being "Communist" and a "Peoples Republic". It never was a true "Peoples Republic" and stopped trying to be Communist in the 1980s.

PS: It is true that mainland chinese are way to comfortable with shitting in public or hocking fat loogies in fancy department store elevators while wearing Prada or Christian Dior. I know American born Chinese who've been to China and witnessed the horror.

As a Chinese American who lost many during ww2 at the hands of the Japanese, I can forgive. It was hard at first because I was fed this and that from my relatives but the reality of it is. That this hate gets you no where. The only thing I hate is those who hurt there own people. In the last few years Japan has done very little to hurt its own people while China continues to do so. From the abuse of the Tibetan Monks to what Mao did to his own people. Even if Japan did apologies to me I doubt I would care. Its been so long since it happen and all China has to go on is it's false pride and its over controlling Government.

Uhm it's not as if ALL china people don't like Japanese. Like what some people say above "you shouldnt generalise the entire population", same applies to the China Chinese.

It's more of the older generations, afterall, they DID experience the war. The rape of Nanking / NanJing was beyond words (not to mention murder too). It was just plain horrible.

In fact in China you get some of the most awesome cosplays ever. OKAY i know it's not exactly related but it does show the love for Japan some China chinese have.

Oh yes and another reason why some China Chinese still hate the Japanese so much is also their refusal to include their war deeds into their history textbooks. So basically the younger generations all do not know about the rape of nanjing etc

Then again, the china chinese only teaches the good about their country too lol.

Let this simply be a reminder to most of us of the danger of radical nationalism everywhere in the world. Each nation has their own sob stories, some go back thousands of years and some happened just yesterday, there is no end to conflicts if we want to count them all. If those mother and daughter were really Japanese, couldn't one also reason that they'd then "naturally" think that "the Chinese are racist and barbaric"? Are they not "justified" in thinking so after receiving such treatment? What would happen to this world if even more of us conveniently and "naturally" reciprocate such hatred? It's too easy to just conveniently and "naturally" give in to our simple, impulsive cognitive bias, to just impose our ideologies onto others in the most unrestrained ways. It's too easy to just be a Chinese, a Japanese, a Korean, an American, whatever, and take on the burden of histories, but too coward to be a good PERSON.

So there.Ignorance and knowing too much of the culture and beliefs are truly worth entertaining than watching insane celebrities talk about their boring lives on reality TV.Maybe I'm more of the leftist side but i respect everybody's voices. It always made my day.Now can't we just get along and start condemning prejudices?

How about this: Japan makes a formal apology to China for its actions in WW2 and puts Nanking in the history books and China stops bringing it up. There's nothing productive that can possibly come out of all this bickering. There are no major territorial disputes between the two countries (aside from some over a few islands and fishing/natural resource rights) and they do a lot of trade together. Same with Korea.

The only reason people are like this is because it's easier to spit venom at foreigners and outsiders than to look to your own nation's problems and try to solve them. We Americans do it, the Chinese do it, the Russians, so on. It's one of the reasons the world is a shitty place to live.

White imperialists from America, France, and England said the same bullshit a hundred years ago. It was bullshit then, and bullshit now no matter who says it. Only China claims to not do anything in the name of Empire like the white people a hundred years ago. China is imperialist too. Like a gay man in the closet.

Look, I'm not one of these FREE TIBET people - though I do think the Tibetans should have cultural freedoms, as should all ethnic/religious minorities. The Chinese government hasn't been willing to safeguard those freedoms. If they were willing to give the Tibetans (and the Uighurs, etc.) more autonomy, the government would be able to undermine the separatist groups in those regions and maintain China's territorial integrity. How can anyone argue with that?

As a Chinese person myself, I find it ridiculous that the Chinese people mentioned in the article would react so angrily at something as trivial as wearing bad cosplay-like kimono.

However, as many pointed out, WII is something many people have yet to forget. Had Japan owned up like Germany did and taken the necessary actions, I'm quite sure the reactions to those two ladies would be significantly different. My grandfather gripes about the lack of respect Japan has for the Chinese a lot, mostly because he was directly involved with the war and went through a lot of shit.

Those who were actually involved in the war, such as my grandfather, usually say they'd like to see just a few things: 1) That the Japanese teach that part of history to their children properly, and 2) that the heads of government would stop visiting Yasukuni shrine.

Asian countries are more sensitive to symbolism in the actions of others, therefore they think that the visiting of Yasukuni symbolizes the Japanese "spitting on the Chinese". This is kind of a big deal over in China, with the pride stuff and what not.

Anyway, stop mouthing off at Japan and China and act more like adults. Both countries have done wrong and both countries have been hurt. There is no absolute when it comes to discussions like these, so stop acting like racist bigots. It's ironic that racists are criticizing others for being racist, but they just can't see that they're doing the exact same thing themselves!

Also, I find Artefact's comments disconcerting. You say that China is full of propaganda, but doesn't the fact that you are posting these articles to make a point about how much you think China sucks make you the same as them?

Are journalists/article writers/etc typically supposed to be so blatantly biased? (Well, this place has the credibility of 4chan, so I suppose this argument wouldn't really fly...)

I doubt you even read the bulk of my comment, which states that the attitudes taken by any of the people here are insignificant compared to people involved in the war, and that those people who were actually alive during the war are less senselessly racist (at least after the war was over) than the people commenting here.

Unfortunately, you do try to make a point about China being fucked up and/or a shitty country with your comments and your replies to comments, which turns what was initially "critical reporting" into something entirely different.

In other words, go ahead and post these articles (which are quite amusing in of themselves), but either scrap the heavily biased commenting or stop pretending that you're neutral in regards to these topics.

Those of you who think all Chinese are as blatantly racist as the individuals in this article are just as ignorant as those of you who think the said racism is justified. Then again, this is the internets. Well, fuck.
