And it is in this sense that you can make the "comparisons" to US politics. Anyone who thinks that there are only two parties in that system has no idea of the ridiculously large (in comparison) amount of parties lumped under the "3rd" or "independent" category. Except none of those count... only the voices of the Dems and Reps.

Also, the anon who called the Democratic Party of Japan most like the Republican party of the US is the truly clueless one. While both Japan's DP and LDP have their own share of fruitcakes and feminazis, it's the LDP in general that advances things like censorship, with the Democratic Party having a more solid civil liberties record.

What Artefact said is generally true, but this means it's the LDP (right wing) that behaves most like the Republicans, and not the DP (more left in general than the LDP). The DP acts more like a political entity suffering from multiple personality disorder (as in ICD-10 F44.8 kind), but otherwise is the party to go to if you advocate civil liberties.

See? I never made a comment on Japans policital system, which I probably know better than most people here considering I have written an thesis on it during my study years. Not to mention all the stupid americans hugging the comment button.

But the system in Japan is kinda like a mix between America and the UK.
Not sure what voting system they use, but I know it consists of three branches. The Executive and the Legislative branch overlap like in the UK, but like America, the Legislative branch is made up of two houses, Representatives and Councillors.
Then you have an independant judiciary.
And I think, but I'm not certain that the Electoral system is STV+, or something similar, by which a mixture of FPTP and proportional representation are used.

And I also think that the Leg is sovereign, as long as it doesn't break the constitution, which the Jud' has the pleasure of checking.

So really, from what I can see, it's the ideal government, as looking at election results, their is never a strong dominant party, either.
There are disadvantages, but it's a very stable model of government.

The party that styles itself as the "Liberal*cough* Democratic*cough* Party" is doing pretty horrible on both, though I suppose "liberal" kinda has a different meaning over here than it does in the US... kinda like how feminist in Japanese slang means something completely different than it does in colloquial English usage.
