A poster issued some years ago by Japanese police, featuring the charming loli captain Ruri Hoshino (of anime Martian Successor Nadesico), urges drivers and passengers to ensure they fasten their seatbelts when launching their space battleships.
Her admonition reads “Launch! My seatbelt’s fastened!”
Almost as fine an example of moe marketing as one could wish for…
Another reason why we need to wear seatbelts:

that looked really uncomfortable. is that driver from New York or an action moive?
Looks like a form of Candid Camera from Japan.
Wouldn’t a closer translation be “Launch! After the seatbelt’s fastened”?
At least I’ve always thought the -てから ending tended to carry temporal connotations.
kara ending a sentence is more like the “cause”
like, from school text,
i don’t buy this book. because my friend is lending it to me.
“because” at the beginning of 2nd sentence is expressed via -kara ending, in japanese.
i guess my english sucks, right now.
anyway, the translation would be something like
launch, since i have fastened the belt.
therefore, artefact stands correct
I have to say that’s an oversimplification, though probably true in at least 80% of cases. [$VERB te-form] kara usually tends to mean “first $VERB happens, then the rest of this sentence”.
yeah, that’s surely an oversimplification – though it actually works in here; there are tons of other situations in which the same thing means something else, but.. oh well
I always got the strangest looks from Japanese (and Americans) when I put on my seatbelt in the back of taxis in Japan. “Why would you wear it if you don’t need to?” because my life is worth more than the two seconds it takes to put on the seatbelt?
For some reason, several Japanese taxis I’ve been in had seatbelts that JUST WOULD NOT FASTEN. I once spent 80% of a trip from central Fukuoka city to neighboring Kasuga (don’t ask me why I took a taxi, it’s too long ago) trying to get the damned seatbelt mechanism to click shut, before I finally gave up and decided to hang on for dear life instead.
Ahh Nadesico…brings back memories. Though I think mostly otaku’s would really pay attention to this and not for the message either ^^.
captain Ruri Hoshino <— for the most part ruri isnt the captain of the nadesico, she is in the movie the prince of darkness but most fans consider it to be a piece of crap, and ruri was made captain purely on her moe appeal.
But if you had seen the poster, you could have noticed that it’s THE Captain Ruri from the movie and not the younger one from the series.
