Pope to Africa: “Don’t Use Condoms!”

kashiwamochi_yomogi_condom.jpg

The Pope has told Africans not to bother with condoms, as they can’t help against Aids or HIV, and just make things worse. Instead he recommends abstinence and “spiritual awakening.”

He claimed in a recently commenced visit to Africa that distributing condoms can’t help control the spread of Aids, and even goes so far as to claim that “they can even increase the problem”.

Instead of worldly latex, the Pope advocates “spiritual and human awakening” to combat the spread of the disease. He did not cite any clinical trials to support this method. The elderly German also urges sexual abstinence.

Tens of millions of Africans are already infected with HIV, so it is fortunate his flock have his wise words to guide them.

This visit comes in the context of increasing numbers of Papists on the continent, having in thirty years apparently increased 5%, to 17% of the African population.

Assuming his followers breed faster than they die from the disease, and that Muslims do not multiply even faster, his advice will doubtless ensure Catholicism’s market share increases in the coming years.

He will also be haranguing regional leaders over their corrupt and ineffective governance, and urging the continent to unite (under Christ, presumably), though he saw fit to start his visit with the weighty matter of condom usage.

Via the BBC.

You may also recall the Church was recently involved in the excommunication of a number of particularly sinful doctors

For some reason, now all I can think about is someone following the Pope around when he goes to talk about this, holding a "[citation needed]" sign over his head.

It's people like the pope who give religion such a bad reputation...not every Christian is completely retarded, although since those kind of people are the loudest, you'd almost think so.

The Pope is the POPE, though. So at the very least, he is speaking for the opinions of the entire Roman Catholicism. At some point, you have to stop claiming this to be the work of the minority, and accept the fact that the comment from the Pope is the popular opinion of his people.

He is not the loudest; he is the most powerful, and can make others do what he says. That's the difference.

This is obviously a sensationalist headline.

You must have something against the Pope Artefact, because the article says nothing about the Pope stating "condoms do nothing to preventing AIDS/HIV" but rather it says the pope said "handing out condoms is not the answer in the fight against HIV/Aids."

I mean cmon, it's right there at the top of the article!

Obviously the pope is saying that condoms only encourage more sex, which constitutes more risk. He also states that the correct way to solve the problem is not with money (buying condoms for these people), but with "Spiritual and Human Awakening", that is basically teaching the people the benefits of abstinence.

I dislike religion as much as the next atheist, but that is no reason to twist words to this extent.

And kudos to all you commenters who did not even read the article, sheep.

    19:10 18/03/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Yes, because more sex _with_ condoms is more risky than less sex _without_ condoms. Especially in a place where most people carry HIV. /sarcasm

The pope is _against_ condoms - this is a fact. The Catholic Church is against the use of contraceptives in general. They would prefer total abstinence unless you're having sex with your lawfully wed partner to make babies. What they don't want to realize is that people don't work this way, have never worked this way, and no amount of "spiritual and human awakening" is going to change that.

I kinda disagree with this, I know many many people both athiests and religious that don't want to have sex before marriage. Of course this doesn't work for everyone.

Im sure you'll agree that no sex is the best way to stop the spread of HIV, with using condoms coming a close second. If you ignore for a second for the fact that Catholics are against condoms and pre-marital sex, and just weigh up the pros and cons, obviously less sex would be good for Africa right now. But if you can't stop them having sex, then of course, give them condoms.

Yeah right. Cut the pope some slack here, he's not advising people to have sex without condoms so it's not his fault that HIV and overpopulation ruin the country.

You say it's his fault because people listen to him when it comes to condoms, but it's just as much not his fault because people don't listen to him when it comes to sex.

It's clearly the people's fault for not realizing that you should either follow his advice completely or not at all. If they think they can make up for not practicing abstinence by not using condoms either, they are clearly too stupid to be helped either way.

"Obviously the pope is saying that condoms only encourage more sex, which constitutes more risk"

    how, exactly ?
they have sex anyway. better protected, right ?
if it is true that condoms will encourage more sex, it won't constitute more risk, since it's safer :\

also the way artefact wrote the article is fine; he clearly stated that condoms do nothing to prevent aids, which is wrong, and also that "it will increase the problem".

seriously, it's exactly what he said: artefact did not twist anything, and i can assure you since i saw the proper news service even more than just 1 time. it's maybe a vice of translation or whatever, but even so, changing the words do not change the content of his speech.

pope should really learn how condoms work, before talking.
or he could just shut the fuck up.

just to say, I don't agree with the pope at all.

But I still stand by that this is written sensationalized and inaccurate because the BBC article never said anything about the pope saying that using condoms was bad. He said distribution (like throwing condoms of trucks) is bad (one can only assume he means that it contributes to moral decay).

While it does not explicitly say that the pope said that condoms are good or bad (just the distribution), it does say that distribution is not the best way to prevent aids. So I think a better title would be "Pope tells Africa abstinence is better than condoms". And in that sense, even the BBC article is slightly sensationalized.

    well..
    let's put it this way:

pope says "condoms aren't the solution to aids"
ok. i don't completely agree, but i can see the point. you may want to say that education, abstinence are needed to eradicate the problem, since you're catholic and blablabla.
but then, he adds: "and condoms make thing worse". in my country the news reported it something like "pope says condoms are not a solution to aids spreading, but instead it'll help it spreading".

i wasn't there, and they didn't let us see the whole video, so i cannot say for sure.
    but still...

    I'm with you Julius

i even went to see the news in other places (BCC included) and while i still don't agree with it what he said isn't as bad as the idea of what this article transmits

just as an example, the phrase "they can even increase the problem" looks like it's referring to condoms when in truth is actually referring to distribution, because in fact what he said was something like "it [the distribution] can even increase the problem"...

    ^You sir, are a genius.

Especially Otaku should be able to relate to the pope's demands. I mean, isn't religion some kind of obsession in itself?

Otaku have long proposed that it would be better for the world if people got their kicks out of obsessing over anime girls complete with collecting figures, reading official manga and doujinshi, and lots of fapping, than out of laying people they met at bars or clubs or whatever was the common method at that time.

Catholic Christianity has long proposed that it would be better for the world if people got their kicks out of obsessing over Jesus complete with collecting crucifes, reading the bible and related fanbooks, and lots of praying, than out of laying people they met at bars or clubs or whatever was the common method at that time.

Otakism and Christianity have lots in common. Christianity is only one step more extreme than Otakism because it implies that obsessing over Jesus could replace the physical need for sexual stimulation, while Otakism stops at implying that obsessing over anime and games can replace the physical need for social activities including 3D humans.
