A housewife has been prosecuted for accessing her friend’s MMORPG account and stripping her character of items for sale online.
Last October, the lady (22) apparently somehow secured the log-on and password to an online acquaintance’s (a 29-year-old lady apparently known only virtually) MMORPG account.
According to police, the game operates a system “where players can enjoy themselves equipping hats and clothing”, and of course there are rare items.
Seeing that her friend had plenty of nice gear, the housewife accessed her account on six occasions to strip the character of items, which she then took and sold online.
She apparently managed a total of 45 items, selling them all for a total of some ¥50,000.
She has been charged with unauthorised access to a computer system.
She admits to the heinous act, explaining “I wanted some money I could freely use myself.”
We do not hear the game in question’s name, nor an explanation for why things took so long.

You may recall similar incidents previously; Japanese law enforcement certainly take MMORPGs seriously of late…

.. rule one Never give PW to anyone... EVER
IRL its really easy to get passwords from another person's pc. really.
So can anyone tell me where exactly the image at the top is from? It looks familiar, but I can't place it.
What a bitch that 22 year old woman is.
She got real money for the in-game items?
happens quite often, i level and sell (well, used to) World of Warcraft accounts, you'd be suprised how much people pay for pre made 80's
you can also sell gold, that works well too. or used to.
I wonder what the victim said to bring attention to this? Help, I've been virtually robbed! XD
it's illegal to sell mmorpg game items for real money, so hacking and "unauthorised access to a computer system" arn't the only things she's in trouble for
Illegal? It may be against ToS, but this is not the same thing as illegal.
In most countries violating a contract (== violating ToS) is considered a criminal offense.
ToS are not legal contracts
MMORPGS are serious business :3
Its like a champion in Ragnarok hahaha...
Or monk maybe...
Pretty sure it's a Monk.
With Evil Wing Ears.
well it is ragnarok champion
money is the root of all evil
Agreed
Not quite right, as money itself is not evil...The [love] of money, however, is.
Again, not quite right, as the greed is. LOL
>.<
Las October or Last October? :o
Anyway..
The internet is serious business.
moral of the story...
don't trust your friends 100%...
hahaha...
she should have changed her password after the firs time
Maybe she wanted to be stripped I mean wanted the attention.
... Wooo this reminds me almost like that Maplestory article...
Lol maple... Cases like this is.. not worth mentioning.
So what now? Refund the 50000 bucks?
Items on an MMO are really just data on a game company's server and not truly in possession of the player themselves making it not theirs to sell. The best course of action is to probably hand the money over to the game company and have them strip the buyer of those items or ban them if possible and regenerate the old ones for whoever got hacked.
It may come as news to you to learn that the money in your bank account is just data on the bank's servers...
I <3 fractional reserve banking.
I hope that's ¥50,000, if not, they got ripped the fuck off.
It's fun to mess with friends' game saves, although selling items is too much.
I once dumped my brother's Oblivion character's items in the river. When I told him I sold his stuff he was like 0_0 WTF!
this pic makes me think that there should be a goth gallary.
plz atry answer my prayers (then you whould have proven to be better than god)
It kinda looks like Raidy from Thunder Warrior Raidy eroge RPG...
What? Woman playing online games?
BlASPHEMY!
Nah, I joke. :P
---
£363.66 from selling 45 items? - Not bad.
I wonder what game it was though.. I guess we'll never know.. Oh well.
its becoming pretty rare these days to see such a young housewife.i want
Artefact my love, you seem to have made a few mistakes in this post:
"Las October" - Last October
"character f items" - character of items
"manage a total" - managed a total
I love you Artefact ^_^
Thank you. What is really depressing is that this was all written in a word processor for once...
A word processor?!
Notepad, vi(m) or notepad++, that is all you ever need.
If you enjoy letting huge numbers of errors through perhaps.
Don't make errors, just do it right first time!
I've been wanting to ask Artefact, do you live in the US, UK or JP/CN?
yeah 2 typos in this topic...
don't we get a change to see her naked character :\ ?
"strip the character f items"
of items maybe?
I can see the nipple O_O
