Shonen definitely appears to be a rather conservative genre, although of course it is a winning formula…

All those two magazines are weekly?
i'ts interesting at how the cover evolved along with it's content.....and a little scary that i can name a couple of those old covers..
On 50 years, there's obviously an huge evolution!
So much mangas until now!
Nice to get a bit of a nostalgia bomb being able to recognize some of the mangas in the middles of the lifespans of these magazines.
Fuck yeah Pat Labor!
a bit of nostalgia ?
i almost cried ç_ç
rofl at 1959 Shonen Magazine
Those GTO covers made me wanna go re-read it... *goes to re-read it*
One positive comparison: the old one had too much men while the one we have now has a good amount of delicous girls.
Wut cun I say... I LOVE YOU, JAPAN! :3
\(^∀^)メ(^∀^)ノ
Yeah!! Kekkaishi, Recca and GS Mikami!
What's with the obsession toward baseball? jeez!
GTO,Rave, Air Gear, KYO.........and Fairy Tail....

Woo-hoo! 8Man!Cyborg 009 and Touch! No suprise that Japanese loves baseball as their U.S. counterparts do!
Thanks God for the evolution.
FUCKING AWESOME
thank you sankaku
Respect.
I approve of this update and gallery: I watch most of this awesomeness adapted into anime on the tube (except disappointing Samurai Deeper Kyo).
Baseball is mostly the national pastime.
Hey, skirt lift in 1985 edition!
"Conservative"?
Not too sure about that xD
Wow, what a trip to the past.
I can't wait until they release that Shounen Sunday X Shounen Magazine crossover fighter for the PSP:

Not mentioning the DS baseball crossover game...lol
This was really interesting. Very nice article.
Anyone know the names of the mangas on:

Shonen Magazine 1966
All three looks interesting.
Sunday 1987
Just Meet (Hara Hidenori)
Sunday 1991
Patlabor (Yuki Masami)
Magazine 1966
Cyborg 009 (Ishinomori Shotaro)
And other one que
Sunday 1993
Ushio and Tora (Fujita Kazuhiro)

Flunk Punk Rumble (Yoshikawa Miki)
(ヤンキー君とメガネちゃん in Japanese)
Thanks Hide.
I really appreciate it.
I love SankaCom beacuse there is almost always someone who know things like this.
1991 should be Patlabor.
What manga was on the upper right of the Fairy Tail cover(2006)?
amazing...
Never knew 'Offside' ran on Weekly Shounen Jump previously...
Coolest news here up to now. You can see how much manga has changed 50 years to what we know today. That is awesome!
Thanks Artefact for the time travel (at least in my imagination)...
Haha wow, it sure has come a long way.
Wow. ...Look at how much the price has changed. From 30/40 en to 270/260.
wow 50 years and it has changed a lot
More power to Shounen Sunday and Shounen Magazine
Hmm... great compilation of pictures. O.O
Is it related to magazine that Naruto, Bleach and One Piece manga that being serialized in?
Need help to those who know and could kindly list currently popular magazines (with popular manga) and their usual release date/day. Thanks.
Haha love hina, conan, kindaichi, devilman, cyborg 009 and a lots lots more. xD
Since i don't live in japan nor i know japanese i can't read those magazine. But i'm kinda of curious what they show in there?
Are these manga-anime magazine?
Er, just Wiki it? ^^"
Well, little lesson for the lazy ones: in Japan, manga are usually first published one chapter per week in phonebook-sized anthologies printed on cheap paper. Then, every 2 or 3 months, the chapters are collected and published in book (tankobon) form, on better paper. Shōnen Jump, Shōnen Magazine and Shōnen Sunday are the main anthologies of the three big shōnen manga publishers, each anthology publishing a chapter of 20 to 30 manga each week. Of course, there are also anthologies for shōjo mana, seinen manga, yaoi, hentai,... The anthology format allows the publishers to do test runs for series, and to get rapid feedback from the readers.

And still Japan continues to churn out this crap it calls "Shonen". It's as you said Arte, it's a winning formula ($)
Though I forgot about Yakitate!!. One of a depressingly tiny number of gems.
cool
so many sports titles on the covers...
btw, anyone know the title of of the SUnday '93?
Awesome
and lol Zetsubou sensei in 2009
Now if only they'd compile ALL those characters into their next JUMP game for the DS...
well there is one, but on psp

Is that a work from Yabuki Kentaro..?
If you mean the guy with the blue sword/dagger, no (unfortunately... To LoveRU is a fine loli ecchi tentacles manga, but I prefer Yabuki on action manga like Black Cat). It says that it's a new series by Yuu Watase, the author of Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres, etc. The title is "Arata Kangatari".
What the?!
Is it only me or do the more recent issues of Shounen Magazine look like they have pin-up posters of half-naked 3d girls in them???
Yeah it's called idol in bathing suits not half naked o_O
Wow these two magazines covered so many good titles, like GTO, Hajime no Ippo, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Psychometer Eiji, Air Gear, etc.
Unless I'm missing something, there is no Shonen Magazine 2008 cover shown.
Wait, Hajime no Ippo is starting over?!
Heh, at least now Takahashi has a reaason to go on forever.
The October 11, 1964 cover was funny:
gymnast fail
+
rocket fail
(Oh, was that supposed to the Olympic torch, and not a rocket exhaust cone, or a steel smelter?)
