most of the germs(except some notorious ones like HBV,etc) wont pass that barrier,
on the contrary, antibodies,like IgG, from the mother can pass that and thus provide the new-born baby with some basic immune ability,
it is a period during which the immunity system of the baby is not quite maturely developed.
however, the IgG will soon run out(about 6 months) and that is before the fully maturation of the immune system of the baby thus results in the susceptibility of the babies
There have been some evidence that points to babies potentially getting schizophrenia due to a parasite transmitted to the woman by an infected cat. I imagine there's other viruses/parasites that can do something similar.
