Dragonball Evolution, previews of which were much maligned by fans and critics alike, have defied expectations and topped box offices all over Asia.
Over the weekend, Dragonball was the number 1 movie in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.
The movie grossed $3.4 million from 855 locales in China, and was 20th Century Fox’s fourth-highest weekend opening in the market.
The movie also made it to the number 2 spot in Japan, where it is buoyed by the dubbing talent of comedienne Aya Hirano, producing $3.3 million in ticket sales from 540 screens.
Critics have generally received the film negatively.
The movie premieres in North America and the UK on April 9th.
Via Hollywood Reporter.
Fans have complained about liberties taken with the story (even the Dragonball creator cannot bring himself to praise it), the casting of non-Asians, the acting, etc., yet still they crowd cinemas the world over, along with the general audience who are presumably the bulk of patrons.
Continued success looks set to guarantee a series of films for fans to bemoan, and then meekly watch.

I think a lot of the draw is probably just to see how awful it could be. I know my friends and I will be going to see this movie when it comes out for that reason.
I can relate to that. I still want to go and see how bad it could be. Hopefully it's not going to be worse than what I expect it to be...
+9000 FAIL!
the "so bad it might be good" factor
Same over here, too.
again same here.
like the first street fighter movie!
i remember that. xD
I imagine it to be more like the Mario Bros. movie.
Probably more like "its so bad that it will defined a moment in history so you wouldn't want to miss it."
History being made, a new low for movies.
Must see event.
Van Damme's Street Fighter was strangely memorable despite its cheesiness. Who knows, DBE might unexpectedly be THE Street Fighter movie for us in our 20's and 30's.
Tl;dr: I'm gonna watch this shit.
No, even I don't think that it'll fall under the so bad it's good trope.
"...and then Goku was a zombie"
So, how many of you went to watch it just for the lulz and laugh at it?
I could've sworn more than half of the fans went just to laugh at it/for the lulz.
Redundant post is redundant
hahah I think so too... XD
Unfortunately, even the lulz was missing.
..this movie suck .. D :
there;s no epic fighting moment at all
wtf is mafuba technic AOA
and wth with ozzaru
..tch tch
oh well at least bulma is okay u_u
chow yun fat look ghey *hardmode*
pat pat
100% Agree
epic fighting was only in DBZ not DB
Watch it again.
In all fairness, I think Chow Yun Fat enjoyed goofing off in this movie. A far cry from all those serious action movies he starred in.
Mafuba technique is the one used by Muten Sensei's teacher to seal Pikor. In the manga, Muten Sensei tried but failed to seal Pikor while Ten Shin Han wanted to use the technique but found out that the electric ricecooker was cracked.
I didn't watch the movie. I don't think it would be right to support such blatant abomination. Now that they've got some profits, they'll think that they were right in doing it this way. All those fans who bought a ticket just to laugh at it was supporting this abomination. If they just want to laugh, I think it would be best to just download the movie and then laugh with friends.
Wishing not to waste money on this shit.
SnooSnoo goes on a journey in search of a torrent of the movie.
At the end of his journey, what awaits him.
Stay tuned to the next episode of Dragon Ball Z.
..you better not torrenting this at all ..lol
Agreed, I'm not paying money for this, I'm sneaking into the theater. Fuck, my friend did it once wearing a Mickey Mouse hat, how hard can it be?
The cinema at Disney Land is free.
Best way to do it is pay for the ticket for another movie(so you can get past the security guard) and just slid in to see DBE. That way a deserving movie gets your money.
Ahaha, this is hilarious. People bitched so much, and yet they still paid money to see it, bunch of fucking sheep.
Even if I wanted to see it, I'd just torrent the damn thing, christ.
I guess it is a better feeling to go into the cinema with a bunch of friends to talk and laugh about how bad the movie is than doing it alone XD
MST3K style? I guess I can forgive that, if people really did this.
this is so weeirrddddd
Copied pasted my impressions from my blog after watching it last weekend:
================
- Justin Chatwin’s acting was actually okay, especially in the beginning. But later on, he starts to sound very monotone when he talks about finding the Dragon Balls with Chow Yuen Fatt, like he’s reading someone’s cue card offscreen.
- Yumcha has the worst American hick accent I’ve ever heard. It’s like a bastard child of an Australian and a redneck.
- I could hardly make out Piccolo’s “clones” when they fought Goku underground. No wait, scratch that - I couldn’t see jack shit. I guess they ran out of budget rendering their faces.
- Really, really crappy, amateur editing near the end of the movie, showing the transition of Oozaru to Goku. I guess they again ran out of budget here too.
- The World Martial Arts Tournament scene got only 2 minutes of screentime, lol. They might as well not include it at all.
So in the end, what has the Dragon Ball: Evolution movie taught me? It taught me that years of fighting experience and training can be skipped as long as there is the allure of a hot girl promising to snog you at the end of your training. Sex is the greatest motivator!
>>Sex is the greatest motivator!
You didn't learn that from frequenting this site?
You had to do a Tai Chi gesture before releasing a KameHameHa which looked like 'Airbending' rather than a bright energy beam.
was anybody over nine thousands in the movie at least ?
It's not over 9000!
They need Vegeta for that and they will fail at it.
It failed by over 9000!
Can I have just the Japanese dub?
Why bother. Just listen to Aya Hirano's voice while blindfolded from the screen.
i want to see how horrible it is, but i dont want to give them money cus then they will want to make more, so ill prob just torrent it
funny topic is funny
