9-Year-Old’s Abortion: Mother & Doctors Excommunicated

pregnant-loli-schoolgirl.jpg

A nine-year-old girl who was impregnated by her stepfather and received an abortion has been at the centre of a storm of controversy in staunchly Catholic Brazil, as in response to the abortion a Catholic archbishop excommunicated the girl’s mother and the doctors who performed the procedure, saying abortion is worse than rape.

The girl is said to have been sexually assaulted by her 23-year-old stepfather, and months after began complaining of stomach pains. Her mother took her to the hospital, and doctors established that the girl was four months pregnant, with twins.

Realising that the girl’s pelvis was far too small to accommodate the delivery of the infant, and judging that the pregnancy would endanger the life of the mother, doctors recommended the pregnancy be ended. The mother assented.

“As doctors, we could not allow a girl of 9 to suffer like this, until she paid with her own life.”

The archbishop of Olinda and Recife damned all those involved in the abortion, excommunicating everyone involved: “Rape is a great sin, but abortion is an even greater sin.”

Abortion is illegal in Brazil unless “the pregnancy puts the life of the woman in serious risk, or if the pregnancy is the result of a rape”. This case was recognised as being quite legal.

The Church has since faced a storm of criticism for the decision, with even the Health Minister weighing in: “I am shocked by the radical position of this religion which, wrongly saying it is defending a life, puts another life in danger that is as important as any other.”

The stepfather who impregnated the nine-year-old was arrested and admitted to having his way with the child since she was six. He was not excommunicated.

Not only that, but he also abused her older sister until she became too old for him. It was never stated how old she was when he stopped raping her, but that information went public both on Brazilian and Portuguse TVs.

    Yeah, BIG SERIOUS WTF.

If a person here is to blame, it's this rapist who bred the grounds for an impossible delivery (through abominable means) of new life. His evil action, is the source of why the life of the kids died.

The archbishop of Olinda and Recife, can go to hell for their misguidance of the many.

I can't believe this shit. I guess letting the girl die from childbirth (or pregnancy complications) is better than abortion? Yeah, this is why I'm not religious so far as organized religion: girl is in a catch 22, through no fault of her own. Either way someone is going to die, and the one person who set all of this in motion, gets no religious punishment. However, when the people involved try to make the best of a bad situation (which you'll note "GOD" did not even stop), they're going to hell. The Catholic Church can go to hell (for this among many other things).

    You can't blame people... nevermind.
You SHOULD blame people for being stupid. There are good people in every religion, but this priest is a fucktard.

If there is a God, he probably wouldn't like to be so badly misrepresented. It wouldn't be any surprise if God stayed by the side of the girl and her mother and abandoned the priest instead.

People will kill each other over any belief, it has nothing to do with ONLY religion. It could be over race, job, opinion, etc...It's unfair to say religion is a maker of war, because it's a factor of many things. Religion brings peace to most of the world's population, whatever religion they may believe in.

OBJECTION! Shakespeare's religious beliefs (other than the fact that he was certainly a Christian) are unknown. What IS known, however, is that he lived during a time when being Catholic was illegal in Britain.

    03:27 16/03/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

No, your wrong, religions give you the power to make a baseless statement and hold it as the absolute true. That makes it the ultimate weapon, "meaning well at their core" doesn't justify the existence of such a dangerous thing.

    Comment by Anonymous
    04:05 16/03/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

    @Emcivy: why is he/she wrong?

    What if you are wrong?

I'm sorry, but I've learned that in this world EVERYONE thinks that they have the true in their hands.

EVERY religion has "good" and "bad" things and your own personal judgment is what you and everyone just have to follow.

In a world as subjective as this world is, I doubt that a full consensus could be made on such a polemic topic as religion is.

    ----

And for people that the only thing they know to say is "fuck religion" and "religion sucks" try to think that religion gives faith to a LOT of people and if you're so good to say such moralizing things... then think and try to be more polite to other people beliefs. The only thing you're achieving with all the rage and hate... is to generate more rage and hate.

    Anonymous, meet the Dawkins naysayers:

Chapter 1 of Richard Dawkins' book, The God Delusion uses all the classic disreputable techniques that Dawkins has complained about in his dealings with certain creationists. He misrepresents Christian understanding of God and the role of evidence and faith. In addition, he quotes from unnamed sources, representing them as standard examples of religious believers, when they are obviously not mainline. Dawkins mistakenly categorizes conflicts as being religious in nature, when, in reality, none of the disputes involve any theological issues at all. In fact, the examples all involve political power struggles of groups that just happen to be from different religious affiliations. He fails to to point out the atheists who have committed even greater atrocities. Finally, Dawkins lies outright about how the U.S. courts are protecting "hate speech" on the basis of "religious freedom," when the cases were judged not to be hate speech, nor even religious speech. Despite its popularity, The God Delusion has to be Richard Dawkins' most poorly written book to date.

I don't see how adhering to his faith made the ex-communicating priest corrupt or power-hungry. He was just blindly, faithfully following the dogma of institutionalized stupidity. So how is that his religion is good and following it is good, but it results in something like a 9 year old girl suffering and dying a preventable death?

But then again, this same god asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Issac as an offering. So who knows what the hell it's thinking.

    Comment by Otanon
    06:47 16/03/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

I myself don't have any use for religion etc etc all that jazz.

However, you cannot use the judaeo-christian scenario of God ordering Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as an example of religion being at fault. Because
A)It was a test of faith, it was not required that Isaac died only that Abraham was complient, and Isaace lived thus.
    B) Similar levels and worse shit happen in other religion, much as the same as some religions may be totally faultless. You need either universal arguments/scenarios or a solid argument on every single religion.

This is why people go to university and study for their whole lives, generation after generation, and still we have this 'to have religion or not?' debate. It's not that easy, Dummkopf
