Man Butchers Landlord, Blames Manga

gally-battle-damage.jpg

A man who brutally slew his potential landlord with a vicious hammer and machete combo attack, and then hunted down his family, hospitalizing them, has resorted to blaming manga for his crimes, specifically 銃夢 / GUNNM (Battle Angel Alita).

The culprit, a homeless man known as Huang, was reported to have looked up for houses to rent on websites, contacting potential landlords.

One landlord who agreed to meet him was showing him around the house, when he was savagely attacked by Huang with a hammer, then being slashed about the neck with a machete. The man died instantly.

Not content with that, Huang searched the man’s private documents, and locating his address, proceeded to go to the man’s house.

There he proceed to attack the man’s wife and son after tricking them into believing he was sent by her husband. Injuring himself in the process, Huang went to a hospital, ironically the same one that was treating the wife and son.

Having heard the wife’s description of him, hospital staff contacted police, and he was soon arrested.

huanglol.png

During interrogation the day after the grisly deed, Huang maintained that he was influenced by a manga, said to be GUNMM.

He said he was “trying to pass his misfortune onto others by killing”.

Taiwanese newspaper reports were skeptical, stating that this might just be a diversionary tactic, as unlike manga inspired murders in Japan, there were no manga that is being distributed in Taiwan with such a story, including GUNNM, which whilst violent, tends to concentrate on sci-fi battles and hyper-technology.

gunnm_lo_vol12_000_cover.jpg

In response to this, Taiwanese manga distributor Tong Li stated that they would be checking the work to see if there is any truth to his claims. They also offered their condolence’s family of the deceased.

Via United Daily News and NOWNews. Tong Li’s statement can be seen here.

Although the mass media is notorious for emphasizing manga related interests in killers (as well as games and anything else vulnerable to scare-mongering), given the complete absence of such content in the title in question it seems unlikely to become anything more than the tragic crime of a deranged individual.

Don't blame anime for your problems. It only creates a bad image for anime. Next thing you know people are gonna ban anime because it causes people to do bad things just like all those video games are doing.

Surprised to see newspapers actually doing their job and researching the material blamed instead of just joining in the blame game as per what is sadly far too common in North America.

Saw this on Taiwan Satellite News today on TV...

Apparently, there were scenes in the manga where the protagnist was holding a machete and a hammer as weapons...

But still, they had a psychiatrist comment about it, and the psychiatrist said that the guy is at fault here, and he is only trying to find a scapegoat.

And also, apparently, the manga series in question is not really popular either... being sorted on the side-shelf in bookstores (where the unwanted/unpopular manga goes).

Yeah, I know GUNNM's fairly unpopular. There's a few reasons for that, though.

    1. The series was first published in Business Jump, a Seinen mag targeted at an older white-collar worker demographic. However, while the plot was cerebral and the art was exquisite, it tended towards the high-action excesses typically found in Shounen manga.

    2. The beginning of the series is pretty weak. This may have turned away a lot of potential readers who don't stick with it after the first tankoubon. It gets better. Way better.

    3. The language used in the series is fairly complex; more so than most younger readers can even understand.

As it stands, I think the series is actually more popular in the West than in its place of origin.

This is exactly why mangas should never ever be considered cause for lunatics actions.

    Here's the problem:
1- The fact that the killer thought it would be plausible to blame it on a manga
2- The fact that the manga distributor felt obliged to say they were gonna investigate the manga
3- The fact that people are even considering that he's telling the truth to the point of seaching correlations in the manga

Murders and killing cases like this one WILL NEVER be caused by manga/games/movies/rock music or whatever they want to put the blame on.

A disturbed mind will use ANYTHING to trigger actions like that.

The fact that people still waste time trying to point correlations like that only delays the obvious conclusion: The guy is disturbed, he needs psychological treatment, jail time, or death penalty.

    Simple as that.

It's like a psychopath saying that the killings were motivated by some voice only he can hear.

We don't see the police, media or anyone in their right mind trying to find out what this so called "voice" is, if it exists, if there is a correlation to it, if the voice is to be blamed for the crime.

I really don't get how some "news", police and other people are so fucking retarted to not realize something simple like that.

While, I agree with you 100% that the man is just trying to divert the attention, not everybody have the same opinion as you, especially those not familiar to the subject. It's easier to blame for thing you don't understand than try to find the solution.

That said, I say the newspaper at least give a benefit of doubt that the guy is using diversionary tactics instead of jumping the gun and agreeing with it.

A Defense of the Biblical rule in regards to the rape of young maidens (As seen in Deuteronomy 22; that they there henceforth be the wives of those who chose, unilaterally, to consort with them.)

In the case of the rape of a young virgin female who has come of age to be married (that is: is of childbearing age) we in society have looked on the action and its effects as a whole with abject horror and thusly have brought down a harsh judgment upon those men who choose to act in such a manner.

The two schools of thought that currently exist in support of the harsh punishment of the rape of young maidens are that of the feminist and that of the traditional (common law, Anglo-Saxon influenced).

The feminist thought pattern runs on the idea that the female be the sole arbitrator of her sexual relations and that she, so that she may benefit in what way she wishes, decides with who and at what time conjunctual relations may commence. In this ability to nearly fully regulate conjunctual relations against an almost unlimited desire for such amongst the men of the world she gains immense market power (the demand outstrips the supply (which (in the feminist school of thought) is completely dependent on the wishes of the woman). This market power is secured through the coercive power of the state.

The thought pattern of the traditional (or common law) runs differently but has the same effect; It is known and accepted that men desire that their brides be untouched (this is: that they be virgins and innocent) at the time of their marriage. It is seen, thusly, that a non-virgin unmarried female may have a great difficulty or discover an impossibility of securing marriage and thenceforth be consigned to a life of unfulfillment, despair, and loneliness. Also in this world view is seen that whatever man may in the future be perhaps destined (that is: it is presumed that at some time in the future the young maiden would have found, had the rape not occurred, a man to be betrothed* to and then (no later than one year after) be married to) to marry that female would now be denied a virgin wife. The man who has raped the the young maiden has, in this school of thought, irreparably damaged the life of the female and has also offended some unknown man, who would have traveled the path to marry the young maiden, in the process. Thus in the mind of the traditional (but not the Biblical) this rape must be punished with great vigor. The power state is used, in much the same way, to protect the woman's conjunctual rights. The market power of the woman over the men of the world is not diminished.

The unwonted school of thought on this matter, the Biblical, takes an opposite view of rape (effectively). In the biblical world view, as seen in chapter 22 of the Book of Deuteronomy, the man who rapes a young maiden who is not in betrothal or married to a man states, unequivocally, his absolute demand of marriage to the maiden... and thus it is granted (permanently: that is he forfeits his privilege to divorce (and it must be noted: this is a privilege that the female _never_ possesses), though the Biblical laws and punishments against adultery still stand against the female and any man who would have relations with the female in the husband's stead) and a fee is payed to the father of the new bride. In this case the man acquires the young maiden he presumably wanted (with such force that he felt that he had to act) and the female is not consigned to a life of loneliness (and perpetual loneliness is what all, both male and female, dread). This school of thought partially agrees with the traditional in that it would be greatly unfortunate to waste a young female and allow her to live a life unfulfilled, but it remedies the situation in the favor of the man rather than punishing him to the favor of upholding the female's market power; in this it is in direct opposition to the feminist world view.

All in all, neither the feminist nor the traditional schools of thought are to the advantage of men and neither do they remedy that which we are horrified to think of: that a virtuous young maiden would have her life be wasted to loneliness. Only the Biblical solution both avoids the waste of the female and gives to the man what he presumably wants: a wife for himself.

*Betrothal consists of the betrothed maiden living in the house of her husband for one year prior to the marriage ceremony, as per Biblical designs on said institution.

Also, there is another way to interpret the purpose of those passages in Deuteronomy. You can interpret it as the man is forced to atone for his sin against his companion (as Eve was made to be a suitable companion to Adam) by taking care of her for the rest of his life, natural death or otherwise. Not to protect the "rights" of the other men to wed virgins, but to also help prevent single parent households, and we see how well that's working for us in this modern era.
