Bandai has declared its intent to create a freestanding, full scale Gundam for the Gundam 30th anniversary celebrations. The giant robot will stand 18m tall, and is set to be publically exhibited in July.
The Gundam in question is the RX-78-2 Gundam, the iconic mecha from the first series.
The statue will first be exhibited freely at a park in Odaiba, Tokyo, along with other anniversary celebrations, and will then be moved around the country.
The unit will be constructed in modular parts to enable mobility to be maintained, with a steel frame and fibre-reinforced-plastic exterior. The head will be able to move up and down and from left to right. 50 lights installed in the unit will add to the effect, along with smoke generators.
A 1/30th scale model of the model was unveiled:
Plans were announced for a short movie, as well as a less specific commitment to making a new series under the concept of “Always Beginning”.

THE GUNDAM AGE HAS ARRIVEDDDDD
and earthling will be the first one to be stomped by zakus XD
I HABU C0NCHURORU
IT IS NOT JUST EPIC!
IT'S LEGENDARY!
nice I wonder what is the
"new series under the concept of “Always Beginning”
Missiles optional.
Only if it could fly...
just stick a nuclear reactor inside
It already has one.
The RX-78 is a land-based mobile suit, it isn't meant to fly. Though it does have thrusters to fly through the air for a short time. It's meant more as a "long jump" than actually flying.
It can fly, when when will it love?
then next time in other anniversary...
make it movable...
aw come on, put some efforts in it already and make it movable NOW.
WOW.
I wish the cockpit is enterable. So we can all take turns 'piloting' the Gundam and daydreaming that we are Amuro Ray.
Charge my lazors pew pew pew
that would be nice... no?
I won't mind falling in a super-duper long line just to enter teh cockpit, if ever they will do it.
oh wait... I live in another country...too bad.
@_@
They should have gone with a Knightmare Frame. It would be way cheaper. (Its smaller)
...you just single-handedly killed 30 years worth of anime.
Clamp mecha DO NOT WANT!
I bet they will make a shit ton selling tickets to it.
the statue of liberty of japan!
Free.
It's free.
oh japan.....
Totally cool~
I only wish they go with 00 Gundam and Tran-AM effects.
That will be over 9000 better!!
LOL >.<
But that effect magically castrates you. Do not want.
And where are the 30 years of history?
Fuck it, UC mechas suck! Oh, if it was Destiny Gundam...
You should die in a fire.
However, I do agree that the RX-78 wasn't the best to do. They should've gone with a Zaku :3
Destiny was the worst gundam ever design, and UC has the most awesome mecha designs in Gundam Franchise. = =
Totally true. I still look at my kit collection and think to myself
"how can the goodness that is UC turn to SEED...."
This, boys and girls, is the poster boy for the failure of modern education, since the whole “30th anniversary of the first Gundam series” part of the post seems to have completely escaped understanding.
Reading comprehension skills: not just a metric for testing, but a basic life skill. There’s no excuse for not having them.
Edit: Damn it, the board didn't work right with that last comment.
ANN said they'd take it down after two months. Why?
because they suck thats why.
I want it! :D
Let's start a petition for their next project... how bout the GFAS-X1 Destroy?
why RX-78 ?
why not Freedom or Strike or Gundam Wing or Gundam X or Dendrobium ???
lucky they only made 1 of it and not 1 in each prefecture or INVASION IMMINENT !!!
>why RX-78 ?
Cause it's awesome that's why.
Hey it's Japan. Before they get their invasion fleet built, a giant monster will rise out of the sea and destroy Tokyo.
Because it's the 30th anniversary of the first Gundam series. And the first Gundam is RX-78. And RX-78 is infinitely awesome. And Freedom Gundam is a fail Gundam.
agree 1110%
True, I guess some people only watch fag-service series like SEED or 00....
guess they fail to see the importance of the 1st Gundam that started it all. Also, old gundams > post-1990s-ish gundams (SEED i'm looking at you).
it's his birthday, not freedom nor dendrobium birthday, mind you...
oh and in Japan, THE most popular Gundam all-time was RX-78 based on some research that I forgot where I read it..
Japan is finally unveiling their secret weapons. By next year the whole of Asia will be colonies of Japan.
America better start mass producing metal gears.
Movable would be awesome. But I'm not sure how two joysticks, foot pedals and a assortment of switches can control full articulation of the fingers, joints and overall movement. Either way if that thing could take two steps and raise its arms I'd still shit my pants.
hell yea i was wondering that very same things too. but this is legendary non the less and whiel i haven't seen the first series yet this machine definatley yells "It's a GUNDAM!"
My guess is that the controls would be highly abstracted from the actual movement. In other words: it'd be more like playing a video game than anything else.
TELL ME ABOUT IT!!! This is the best comment I've heard in years. We need to quit dragging ass and start production on Ray immediately.
BTW, the RX-78 is the G.O.A.T. of all Gundams, bow in its presence.
I want to see this... O__O
Wats next?Macross VF? Really looking forward to this!
Not going to happen, but a full scale Nightmare would be nice too
CLAMP mecha do not want.
