Mongolian yokozuna Asashoryu recently debuted as a fashion model, and a cosplayer to boot, waddling down the catwalk in support of Fanta sales.

In the event, called Shibuya Girls Collection, and held at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Asashoryu modeled a typical Prussian cadet uniform, the standard for Japanese boys, much to the delight of the 20,000 crowd, most of them female teenagers.

Dancing on stage with the other models, his task of modeling a school uniform is a marketing move for Fanta, as this sort of material features in their Japanese line of TV commercials. He appears as “Fantaro (13)”:

Asashoryu was clearly excited with the attention, stating “this tension is kind of new to me”.

But whilst he is happy with his new role, some sports newspapers are clearly not, lambasting him after he skipped training for the upcoming Spring Grand Sumo tournament.Taking large amounts of money to promote soft drinks is of course ok.

The Fanta commercials themselves have always been associated with school; this one parodies the old Japanese drama series, Sannen B-gumi Kinpachi-sensei:

The good source.
