Pathé has recently released the trailer for the live action adaptation of Mamoru Oshii and Hiroyuki Kitakubo’s Blood: The Last Vampire anime:

Player 1

Directed by Chris Nahon, the movie was written by Production IG’s Kenji Kamiyama and Hong Kong’s Ronny Yu, and stars South Korean Gianna Jun (or Jeon Ji-hyun if you prefer) as the serafuku wearing sword wielding vampire busting girl, Otonashi Saya.

Meanwhile, the main antagonist, Onigen, will be played by the Japanese Koyuki.

The movie will premier in Japan (May 29, under the title Last Blood), and will then show in the United Kingdom (June 12) and France (June 17).

Interestingly enough, the film might not be aired in the United States, in 2009 at least: Universal Pictures acquired the rights for this movie last August, but they have yet to decide a date for it.

The trailer looks impressive enough, and considering that it is written by Production IG (the original studio for the anime), the adaptation seems set to stay true to its Japanese roots, unlike certain other recent adaptations.

The only point of issue seems to be how the Engrish level of the actors and actresses will turn out to be.

On the other hand, choosing Jeon Ji-Hyun as an attractive lead does help, although it will not help quell those critical of the movie industry for unerringly failing to cast Japanese actors in “Japanese” roles.

Video not found, but that’s because it couldn’t resolve content.sankakucomplex.com’s IP address.

I found the ip address and added to my hosts file:

    Roshi-Asian
    Yamcha-Asian
    ChiChi-Asian
Goku=not Asian (he's a goddamn alien in the series, it doesn't matter)
Bulma=not Asian (which also doesn't matter)

Dragonball's world is a weird cultural hotchpotch, so nationality can't be really attributed to everybody without fail...

It would be blasphemy (if) they changed her nationality!

If they (meaning Hollywood) are going to make a movie *based* on a Animé then do it - "right" - and not make it a farce, as Dragonball...is going to be.

I know I am judging the film (prior) to - (( not )) seeing it, but from what the trailer tells me...

    It's a disaster....

I'm not really sure why otaku make such a fuss about casting non-Japanese actors in Japanese roles. Hollywood rarely goes out and finds real actors with real French or German or Italian or whatever ancestry for roles when they make historical adaptations of foreign literature and instead opt for Americans with vague cultural backgrouns; why do anime adaptations deserve a special treatment?

S'not like Japanese anime ever casts real Americans or Brits for those roles in anime =/ At least Hollywood's getting the CONTINENT right.

You need to consider the difference in budgets between a hollywoord movie and a Japanese anime before you can make that comment.

Plus, there are many cases in anime that they try their best (in their budget) to find a native [insert nationality here] to voice the role.

The Nationalists have more issue with this sort of thing than the otaku. You know, the people who seem to believe that Japan consists entirely of pure Yamato-bloods who are unique and special and better than the rest of the world because they descend from proud samurai with superior culture. Foreign dogs couldn't possibly grasp the amazingness of Japan's four seasons! TEAM JAPAN RAH RAH

Red Cliff II had Takeshi Kaneshiro cast for the character of Zhuge Liang. I'm not too bothered as long as they speak the language proper in the movie which in this case is Japanese...

Just wondering...why can't they just find japanese female actress instead...she's beautiful and all and I have nothing againsnt her, I see most big budget movies end up in the hands of others to play the lead role necglecting the native country, for crying out loud they have hundreds of Idols in that country waiting for a job or gig to put food on the their table.

International purposes. She's famous because of the "My Sassy Girl" movie, thus would have a better chance of atracting viewers than keeping all of the cast pure Japanese and such. And besides, it's debateable that Saya is originally European (as hinted in the Anime series). Most likely she's Asian because this was the movie adaptation.
