Virtual idol Hatsune Miku has finally secured her rightful position near the top of Japan’s national music sales charts, coming in at number 2 on the daily album sales charts thanks to the efforts of group/circle Supercell.
Supercell’s debut album “Supercell”, containing classics like “World is Mine”, “Melt, and “Black Rock Shooter” (below), sold 20,000 copies on the day of its release, triumphantly seizing second place in the best performance yet by a Vocaloid in the traditional music markets (as opposed to their undisputed dominance over Nico and the like).
Their fame is chiefly based on freely distributing their music videos/songs on Nico and YouTube, as well as providing mp3s, demonstrating the effectiveness of a new model of music promotion.
Melt:
Black Rock Shooter:
World is Mine:
Love is War:
You may also recall Supercell recently received two figure adaptations of some of their iconic artwork: Black Rock Shooter and World is Mine…
The album itself is of course readily available.
Via Oricon, the organisation responsible for many of the top sales charts in Japan.
With the carefully manufactured image of traditional celebrities scarcely any less virtual than the likes of Miku or Luka, might not the future hold more of these entirely synthetic idols? They hardly need to be anime styled either…

I'm just curious but for the most part, why would anybody buy this? I mean the only thing I can think of is the higher quality. Is there something in the CDs that is making it worth the purchase?
Buying the CD shows our support for the people that put out these releases.
Congrats to Supercell and Miku!
Do you know in what website I can buy the Hatsune Miku Albums, if you do, please let me know.
Having a physical copy for personal use and distribution does have appeal. I've not yet ripped any videos or audio from Nico and while the process is probably not insanely difficutlt, it would take more than a bit of effort.
Besides, this may help support additional Miku songs and videos being made. I think this is pretty cool.
Actually, it's trivially easy. Go to http://nicosound.anyap.info/ , enter the sm or nm number, hit パソコンへ転送 and you're done. If you get an intervening page, it's probably not been converted yet - hit 変換して下さい and refresh in a few minutes.
Think about it. Vocaloid is software, which is probably quite expensive to purchase.
So it's just a way of showing support.
Kinda like how people donate to fansub groups. They have no obligation to, and the product is tottaly free regardless, but they still do it.
14,175 for miku on amazon japan fwiw
You can always download manga scans on the internet. Why would you buy manga then?
Because you would get a full color book with all the illustrations and cd with added 2 tracks and dvd with videos.
Ok thats what I wanted to know.
No problem. I know this because I own a copy, and its worth buying.
I might buy this, although £27 IS a little steep.
i think it's about showing the music industry, that people _will_ buy the stuff they like to support the artists, etc, even if they could/have already downloaded it for free.
Congrats~ You're my hero, Miku!
I wonder if this has any impact on real singers in Japan? =3 It's like they will be having competition with a virtual idol...
This is rather disheartening. I love Miku as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day, she's still just an illustration representing a voice synthesizer. I'm betting most of these albums are selling based on the popularity of Miku herself rather than the quality of music. It's really sad to see a voice synthesizer topping live musicians.
I'd agree, but considering how many artists rely on synths and auto-tuning nowadays I can't get too upset over this sort of development.
I'd rather support a virtual idol like Hatsune Miku than a talentless hack like, say, T-Pain.
samefag here
I think my biggest problem is that just the same as how I wouldn't be comparing opposites like metal to country, I wouldn't compare this album to music in general. But that's just how these numbers play. No sense in complaining about that.
The person that came out with this album is probably talented in their own right after all, number two on the list doesn't come easy.
I wouldn't say the music quality is less important than Miku's popularity in the success of this album. Composing this stuff and making Miku sound this natural took a lot of talent and work too, you know. As far as I'm concerned, Supercell did a great job, and richly deserve all the success they're getting.
supercell is 1 dude. i'm pretty sure he does all the music composition, arrangement, and songwriting himself.
hmmmmm... I think I'll rather get the normal edition from yesasia with free shipping.
<3 miku. the love is war probably my fav.
I love the screechy effects in World is Mine.
well i imagine because miku is such a idol ppl wud buy it >_>
Damn, Japanese copyright is pretty fucking laid back, they didn't need to pay royalties or anything similar to Yamaha? That's the way to be right there.
Iirc Crypton, that are the publishers for the Vocaloid character series, don't ask for any royalties over the use of their programs. They're not meant for amatorial use only. The one thing that they ask royalties for though is the use of their character names and artwork, so I do believe that to publish an album like this Supercell must have had some kind of contact with Crypton.
Congrats Miku! I knew you'd make it some day.
Hehehehe, yes, it's about time! But yes, supercell makes some really nice music. Very very nice.
congrats!! me really like hatsune miku~
already download 29 vids of her which is the torrent release yesterday at Tokyo Tosho ..
even the quality of vids is quite poor .. but hey~
i really enjoy it! nice go hatsune miku! me wonder if pancabel is in that Supercell (currently downloading).
all thats left is to get myself a copy of this historic CD for my collecion
http://redjuice999.deviantart.com/art/World-is-Mine-1-87712507
Where all the drawings are from and the artist itself.
We're one step away from something like in Lemon Angel Project
Sharon Apple smiles...
CONGRATS TO SUPERCELL, RYO AND OF COURSE MIKU~!!!
Wait, wait, wait.....
I always thought this album was released in 2008. I've got this album late last year from some site, and it was the full album!! But the thing is, mine only had like 10 songs instead of 12 like it was mentioned there. Maybe the one I got was the C75 version..... =P
Either way, I wouldn't mind buying this album if I have the money.
you my friend bought the first "introduction limited edition". It has less songs and right now it's actually more expansive then the new one.
Yeah. Also, the only 2 new additions in the song list are Melt and Hajimete no Koi ga Owaru Toki.
Since I only have a ripped version of the C75 limited release, I'll buy the newer version.
I think that aside from better mp3 quality there isn't a reall reason to buy this album. If they added HD full screen versions of the videos to the disc THEN I would say this is worth buying.
Miku is great!!!
and those are already on my fav list for months XD
wonder how is the album
Hm.. I just saw the limited edition contains a DVD. Does this mean that it really does have all the videos in better quallity?
BTW some admin should really add an "edit" button to the comments. I really hate having to post twice in 2 minutes.
I have the album, the dvd contains a version of the videos with lyrics and one without in standard dvd quality. There's a a version of melt with some extra artwork, the videos that don't have full animation have a few extra drawings.
Also I think the CD on this version comes with 2 extra tracks... amazon.jp only lists 10 tracks on the non dvd version.
There are a bunch of new unheard songs that have not been put on niconico as well.
That's good to know. Thanks.
And they said if you can get it online you won't buy the CD.
Haha this just disproves it. CONGRATS MIKU HATSUNE!
Love is war English subs with a different video - headbangin' Hatsune Miku.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPwDfCUSBhw&feature=related [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPwDfCUSBhw&feature=related]
It's like a Japanese version of Alanis Morissette's "You Oughtta Know."
Actually this is the 3DPV version that I would like to see. Is this in the DVD of the limited edition or did they use the old "slide show" one again?
hmm.. i've never heard a song from vocaloid that i liked. reaching no. 2 spot is mind-boggling
can anyone kindly post the romaji version of all the tracks in the album?
I can has "Love is War" Hatsune Miku figure?
But Hatsune Miku is actually voiced by Fujita Saki.
So...
Ah, I don't know anymore.
didn't the developers just take voice samples and go from there?
I see this currently as more of a fad than something sustainable. The group buying the CDs is probably in large part different from the usual market for pop albums. Given more time the novelty will wear off, as while the songs are catchy, the voices still sound a good deal artificial.
I could definitely see a "Sharon Apple" in the future in Japan, though.
