Attempts to sell the popular Nintendo DS hack devices, known as “majikon” and usually used to allow illegal copies to be run on the console, have recently soared on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but with a new twist; rather than selling the device, sellers are now selling “a right to buy the device”, which they appear to be unfailingly converting into an actual device.
This is a surely a direct result of the recent ban Nintendo established on the device.
The normal auctions are being removed in accordance with Nintendo’s ban and a commitment from Yahoo, but it is not clear whether Yahoo is taking full action against the loophole “right to buy” sales.
Whatever the case, the increased number of these offerings is an indication that sellers are determined to sell their product to the bitter end, whatever Nintendo and the courts have to say about the matter.
Nintendo will no doubt continue to fight the distribution of the devices, but at what cost? And how long will this loophole last? It seems unlikely that other illegal items could be sold in the same way…

=p nintendo will then buy the rights and sell majikon's of their own make it "official" lulz
making them more money XD
Like this would stop China from shipping $6 DSTT carts.
They will ship LSD to your mailbox and throw in a free 200mW Pilotblinder Laser pointer if you next day the package.
That is so true...o.o
I wonder which device was/is most commonly sold in Japan. It's fairly funny though. Motives were illegal to begin with, and that still hasn't changed. Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free~ Yohohohoho~
Man, how hard is it to properly draw the DS Lite's two rectangles at an angle? Did this guy not learn about focal points?
"a actual device"? Think it should be an.
Anyway, seems like a useless fight this way, or at least, unprofitable...
Im doing fine with my M3 Simply so the outcome doesn't matter as long as they stay away from that.
one word:
"Streissand effect!'
hmm thats two...
majikons helped promote the DS... I'm convinced tons and tons of DSs were sold only because devices such as magikons exists.
Which is something not limited to DSs... Playstation 1 and 2, XBox, PSP... they all got a boost in sales as soon as a cheap and easy way of unblocking or making pirated copies of games was released to the broader audience.
Now, I'm not shure if Nintendo is, from time to time, "going against" magikons because they ignore that fact, because they know about it but are pressed by game developers to take some action, or only as a "hidden" marketing strategy.
Because it's a fact that the last time they took some action, R4 sales increased so much most people selling it had to make reservation lines.
And I guess it's fair to assume that with R4 getting tons of orders, DS sales also increased as consequence.
But do go on Nintendo, do go on... the money printing machine will continue rolling.
And it's very convenient. Because when DS number starts decreasing, they can always blame it on piracy, because there will always be gullible sheeps willing to buy such lies.
One can always have a good laugh when big corporations (or sheeps) say that piracy hurts the industry, even with the clear fact that piracy helped popularize the gaming industry, making it more profitable than Hollywood nowadays...
Evidence?
I've read that most game companies lose money selling the systems in order to make money selling the games. Not sure about Nintendo systems, but definitely for Xboxes and PS's. So by allowing devices such as magikons to exist, the game companies lose their primary revenue stream from game sales. As a business whose model is designed like that, you really can't blame them for going after pirates.
Yeah, majikons promote DS sales.
Let's completely ignore the possibility that Nintendo might make a profit off sales of DS games.
After all, DS games are completely irrelevant and unimportant to Nintendo profits, and only DS sales matter.
And it's not like majikons would affect the sales of legitimate DS games now, would it?
I strongly agree with "majikons helped promote the DS". The only reason I bought a DS is because I got a free R4 coming with it.
I barely use my 'majikon' anymore. :\
I ended up getting a PSP since I can put a bunch of other crap on it now, and it's not even hacked yet! lol
The only reason I even bought my DS was to use a flashcart
Ya its better than a Ipod!
Forget hacking the DS. Buy a PSP, its more expensive but much easier to hack. No extra hardware needed.
I don't think the success of the DS is to due to flashcarts but 8-year olds and house wives playing Brain age and Cooking Mama. I consider the PSP more as a homebrew loader while the DS has games that are actually worth playing.
PSP= games are watered down PS2 ports. Better used for homebrew.
DS= Simple, fun games(better then those on the Wii) There are actually hardcore games like Phantasy star zero and Devil survivor that are coming out.
Technically you do need extra hardware to hack the PSP, you need the Pandora battery. Sure, you can borrow it. But you can borrow a PassMe for a DS as well. Or you can just buy a R4 and stick a memory card right into it to get your DS hacked without even hacking it.
Is PSP-3000 hackable yet? It's nearly impossible to buy the previous models now.
what you want 'cuz a pirate is free
YOU ARE A PIRATE!
Yar har fiddledy-di
Being a pirate is alright with me
Steal what you want and you'll get it for free
You are a pirate.
Nintendo can't win, for Wii softmodding via Twilight Hacking has spread like the plague.
This has nothing to do with the article but you should make a gallery for girls playing video games. I've been taking the pictures of gaming girls recently. Oh and make a bride gallery too.
Good idea.
someone please tell me why Nintendo gives a FUCK what people do with the consoles *they own*?
Sorry, bro, but when you sell someone a product, it's fucking theirs. You don't get to say "But wait, you can't do that!"
Uh... What rock have you been living under? Companies have been arguing against the consumers' rights to do whatever they want with their stuff for at least a decade if not five. Some companies even disliked people modding the case for the machines they had purchased, and tried to make that illegal, a decade or so ago.
fapple does it. one of many reasons why I hate the company.
