A recent preview of the upcoming Dragonball Z HD remastered TV series, entitled Dragonball Kai, reveals a good glimpse of what the updated animation will look like once the rebranded show airs next month.

Most noticeable is the change from 4:3 scale to 16:9, which unfortunately results in a cropping of the original frames…

Here are some comparison shots of the original 4:3 animation above the new 16:9 shots, kindly provided by 2ch:

Comparison B

It appears Son Goku’s marvelous full head of hair will likely be a casualty in many scenes in the updated series,  but otherwise the animation quality of the 20 year old show is impressive, as can be seen in the PV:

Dragonball Kai is announced for airing April 5th, according to the official Toei website.

The best thing about this is that there will be no fillers. Meaning there will no longer be long dragged out moments.

Nope, there were still long dragged out moments. Seriously, they managed to get the voice actors back, they should have just remade the anime.

DRAONBALL KAI IS NOT GOING TO LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THIS. ITS JUST A PROMO. DRAGONBALL KAI IS GOING TO LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THAT DBZ SPECIAL THAT CAME BACK OUT IN NOVEMBER 2008. I DONT KNOW WHY IN THE HELL PPL KEEP POSTING THESE COMPARISON PAGES NO OFFENSE BUT IM GLAD YOU GUYS WAS CURIOUS ENOUGH TO DO IT JUST TO MAKE SURE THOUGH.

Some things no one has mentioned:

    THE THEME SONG IS DIFFERENT

    THE MUSIC IS DIFFERENT

    THE VOICES ARE DIFFERENT

This is serious crap. Why would they do this? There is a stupid rhythm guitar during EVERY scene, like you can't watch people talking without music in the background. it's more like the lame american version. Once again, dumb japs doing whatever americans do whether it's better or WORSE.

I guess they figure the REAL remaster is the DRAGONBOX set. Now they can screw it up for the younger generation who don't know any better.

It's like all those old people who are tricked into buy those yellow sunglasses because they're called HD VISION. "oh it's HD so it must be better"

    lame.

Yeah, you should try animating a show sometime, or um, shut the fuck up about how people don't do what you want to the show that THEY make. Plenty of people like it, they don't need you in their audience, champ. ;)

Hmm, Possibly the standard DBZ footage in the comparison looks so crappy because it seems to be hosted on a very low quality video hosting site. Lawlz, Buy the DBZ Funimation Remaster, It looks just as nice as DBk with all the traditional footage WOOWOO.

all you haters are bull shitting everyone here, the only reason you're saying that there were better animes is because of the time period
your mother was shouting at you to go to bed cause you wanted to watch the DB/Z/GT marathon going on(and that applies to all ages), so now you're complaining that it drags on for too long
you fucking love it and would love to take a giant golden monkey penis/take Bulma or Pan on the table and have you way every six ways to sunday

I am sort of disappointed that it isn't a new series or anything. I grew up with this stuff. I love DBZ and think it's one of the best anime's ever produced. Those who are hating on Pokemon could only wish to come up with a marketing ploy so genius, even though it has gotten pretty bad itself. I wish they would just do something new with the DBZ characters. I want new story. I respect the attempt at a live movie, but we all knew it was going to suck. The should have gotten the bros who did the matrix. Even though the second two movies weren't all that, the last scene of the last movie is very DBZ esque and shows that it can be done. When will Hollywood learn?

And...this was needed why? The money used to create this could have been used for something meaningful.

Seriously though, who really, other than some really rabid fanboys CARES about DBZ now...and now we have to see it...AGAIN?

Having watched the first episode, it seems like they re-outlined the cels on top of the backgrounds for definition purposes, and have done zero to the backgrounds.

Also, damn, you have a lot of flame wars/arguing on your site. Anytime I read an article there are extensive threads of bickering...

i don't know where your getting your information from but there is no cropping in the 100 eps of dbz that will make up dragonball kai. you get all the extra on the sides that you get with the remastered version as well as the extra on the top from the original. basically what is being done is they are cutting out all the filler making the show move faster, thank the gods for that no garlic jr. anyways they are shortening z and making the picture quality better. though i wish they would redraw the entire show all 291 eps the way they do the opening, intermissions, and ending that would be so freaking amazing and then it would once again take it's place at the top as the best anime ever, though it has been there all along for many of us.

I have only read the Dragon Ball manga and when it ended I wasn't intrested in giving Z a chance because of it's episode length and the chance that It would ruin my expectations. However, now when they will do a rerun I probably will give it a go.

Is Z equal to the manga or better?

I would say equal. The anime does try to portray the events that happened in the manga though...just not extremely well since it was an old anime. However, I still liked both.

When I got to tour the TOEI studios that were actually doing the re-mastering they let me draw on some 'cels' (the original cel artwork is gone, and they're drawing over the published footage.

I noticed the difficulty of having to draw new material at the top and the bottom of the frames - while the immediate need is to add to the sides.

Here's a video of how it's done [http://ghostlightning.wordpress.com/2009/02/07/dbz-in-hd/] (well, not exactly).

According to Jay Hernandez, the in-between animator who toured us some new art is being done - specifically on the sides and on the bottom.

My theory is, looking at the comparison videos you put up: these were either rushed, or they really don't have a lot of time.

Given TOEI Philippines' Presidents' comments confirming how the current economic conditions are affecting the industry [http://ghostlightning.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/interview-toei/], I wouldn't be surprised at all if they cut a few corners.

Dont get why this is a big deal. They already released remastered widescreen versions with 5.1 sound in North America with the newest boxsets (orange boxed ones, like $25-30 each). Did they never bother doing it in Japan?

    Comment by Anonymous
    22:18 02/03/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

    Where to start...
The US remastered boxsets are absolute crap.
The source is an old copy of the VHS film.
It wasn't even remastered properly either. It should have been done frame by frame to remove signs of glue, hairs and so on, but instead they took the cheap option and did batch process.

DBZ has been remastered before in Japan, in the form of the 'Dragon Box', which is universally regarded as the definitive DBZ collection and sells for crazy amounts at auctions.
Unlike this, it isn't cropped and the pitcure is suberb, much better than the example shown in these screens.
Still, this is a great way for Toei to milk a dead cow. We've already seen people are stupid enough to buy upscaled stuff on Blu-Ray, so I'm pretty sure there would also be interest in a condensed, cropped version of DBZ on that format... ^_^
