A Tokyo district court has finally awarded Nintendo the ban on “Majikon” and similar devices, usually used to circumvent copy protection on games for the Nintendo DS.
The ban, long sought by Nintendo and a coalition of five game makers, bans import sales of the devices, and prevents the sale of such stock as is in the region. Major online auction sites now prohibit dealing in the tools.
The court recognised Nintendo’s claim that it was being dealt great damage by the trade in the devices, and so ordered the ban. Nintendo crows victory:
“It was most proper of the court to recognise our claim, and we recognise this as an appropriate ruling. We and the other publishers will continue our efforts to ensure firm legal measures are taken against Majikon.”
The major target for the measure would be the R4 Revolution. Whether the ban is effective in the future is one thing, but the actual efforts to secure the ban ensured a great many sales for the devices as people came to know of its existence, and many stocked up in anticipation of a ban.

and i will continue NOT to buy anything i can't use how I like.
a hackable toy is not a toy. just an expensive piece of feces.
they try to force their ways everywhere in the world, so it's not a big surprise they succeed from time to time. the uk is a notable example. i sure hope the eu doesn't give in to their greed/bribery.
they got damaged in sales in japan o.O
I thought normal otaku will usually buy 3,
1 to be opened and play with
1 to be displayed
1 to stock if anything happen with the other 2
and the obsessive type will buy the game like the idolm@ster one, 1 person get 39 copies o.O
that only applies to blue haired otakus
It doesn't matter whether you're for or against piracy, the shovelware companies will all bury us with their turds anyways.
(And yes, ROM dumpers DO buy every and all shovelware for the sake of dumping ROMs. Scary indeed.)
I could say, PSP weens.
Nintendo has too much fucking money. How about the arcades sue Nintendo for releasing their piece of shit console and killing their business.
I loled at the mention of the R4 Revolution. Seriously Nintendo? That one has been out of production since 2008. Of course, they could be targetting the clones and fakes... which is actually good, since they are crap.
A person has a right to protect their copies of the games they've bought. A person has the right to buy and be able to play games of other regions.
In the golden years of gameboy color and gameboy advance I used to buy all the games I played with. Today only 2 of about 12 games I have for the gameboy color are still working (the games' cartridge just die after awhile) and the save files for the remaining 2 got corrupted. This made me decide to never buy games for the ds, unless I find them for really cheap.
BTW although I am a pirate (argh mi mayty!)I still agree with nintendo Japan. New DS games cost like 4000 yen, which is cheap, and used ones sell for 2500 yen which is a laught. It's different in the rest of the world though. My verdict is: if you like it buy it, but don't be ashamed to play the pirate's version first before deciding!
Bah, the DSi has a built in SD slot. If hackers figure out a way to hack it like the Wii and PSP, R4 will be obsolete.
Hail Russia, where you can easily get any game for almost any platform for 2 bucks.
And look at the quality of Russian games...
Hey, S.T.A.L.K.E.R was good.
Oh wai-... that was in Ukraine.
Silent Storm is the best I can think of.
We do have some more or less good ones but not much. My favorite genre is jRPG though. We don't make them here obviously.
That's right. Everybody loves to copy TETRIS xD
But I also like Russia because I like pirates and as the slogan will have it, communists are pirates.

may i come over? XD
EVERYONE! To the mother land!!
R4 IS Obsolete. Acekard has already made a cartridge for the DSi that is also compatible with DSLite.
I'm not interested in external carts. Only soft mods with a SD card. Until they can do that ill just stick with my PSP.
Ya don't got a PS Vita, mate?
Just curious, does M3 DS Simply work on the DSi?
aught to... it's just a ds cartridge
There are several devices that do not work on the DSi. It's probably one of them.
Heh, good thing my cousin already had a modded Nintendo DS. But the thing is though, all the games he had on the DS is plain boring. *sigh* Good thing Malaysia has a large piracy market, a fully modded DS with a 1GB card (with games and software) and some accessories are only RM600 (about 162USD)
While this doesn't effect the US or at least not yet I'm glad I got a M3, it been great to play imports and homebrew like VNDS which lets you play Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime on the DS.
Again, The customer and the consumer looses again . . .
I wasn't referring to piracy actually. I was more refereeing to regionalized games . . .
The DS doesn't have region locking on games, you can import from anywhere you want to.
Of course. The customer doesn't come first - profits do. Who cares if Nintendo's huge profits are slightly dented by this innovation? A few fanboys and a whole load of mouth-breathing idiots who don't see a contradiction between their free-market ideology and the monopoly of legal capital held by commercial giants like Nintendo.
You're a fucking idiot.
Anony troll calling another names? How "quaint"...
How about these corporate giants stop abusing their monopolies and consumers and release products that can be easily used and bought no more of this antiquated physical distribution crap that only raises prices and locks out regions for profit trolling.
If they will not seek to fill the needs of the many the many will by pass them and make them irrelevant.
Hell I had to get a R4 to play my GBA/NDS games on the DS lite(which I am thinking of trading in for a older DS because its to damn small).
The fact is we as the over whelming populaces of the world have the a right to these devices now the software not so much and in fact they are losing money not seeking to fill this profit niche not loseing money to people that don;t want to buy their shit to begin with.
fucking communist (but if you are from China i guess that is ok)
"How about these corporate giants stop abusing their monopolies and consumers and release products that can be easily used"
because they don't have to just the same you don't have to buy a Nintendo DS.
monopolies are illegal if it was done using anti-competitive practices.
Nintendo didn't do that like stopping the Sony PSP nor does it have a handheld gaming monopoly.
the thought that "Nintendo has a monopoly on the Nintendo products" is just stupid. what next, PSP games should play on the DS or else Nintendo has a monopoly?
"The fact is we as the over whelming populaces of the world have the a right to these devices now the software not so much and in fact they are losing money not seeking to fill this profit niche not loseing money to people that don;t want to buy their shit to begin with."
you must be a communist.
why would anyone want to create anything if they have to give it away?
*starts breakdancing*
You're an even bigger fucking idiot.
Agreed.
To me it's the same thing as the I-Phone. A company sells you a product and then tells you that you can only use it the way they want you to use it. That's why I refuse to buy either.
I-phones are COMPLETELY different. In fact, comparing the two, they're irrevelant. Once we purchase hardware, it's ours. We're free to do whatever the hell we want with it.
For example jail breaking an iphone? Not illegal. You're modding the hardware that you rightfully purchased. The reason the ban is being put on the flash cards here, is because they're illegally downloading software. Making flash cards and having them in most countries is not illegal. They're supposed to be for game back-ups and media. Obviously some people use them for illegal reasons, and Nintendo knows this. So to solve the matter they figured just ban the flash cards altogether. Nintendo isn't telling you how to use your hardware, they're telling not to steal their software that they worked hard to make and deserve to get paid for it.
Kazaki
Exsactly these are devcies that can be sued for much more than mere gaming or piracy.
The fair use of such devices outweighs the imaginary numbers they trump up in supposed loses.
Hell if you are making a profit off the unit sales things like this make you money not lose it.
By the same token, "pirates" can hardly expect a right to infringe copyright with no action from the holder.
you must be a communist if you think Nintendo deserves it they "would be funded from tax money."
that and the ridiculous notion that "There is no god-given right to be paid for any shit that you happen to put out, and neither is there a right to be paid when the result of your work is used" could only come from a communist.
i pay for those "royalties to road workers for walking down a street!"
it's called an income tax.
again, a communist would not know that since you have no income and it goes to the govt. (a tax of 100%).
Deserve? Hardly! If that was the case then Nintendo would be funded from tax money.
Shovelware doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that. There is no god-given right to be paid for any shit that you happen to put out, and neither is there a right to be paid when the result of your work is used -- otherwise we'd be paying royalties to road workers for walking down a street!
Awww, now gamers will have to pay to play. Boo hoo...
This is a flashcart, made to load homebrew primarily, right?
If you replace "homebrew" with "copied games", then yes.
While that is not to say that homebrew isn't a player in the whole thing, indeed the chief goal of this thing is to streamline piracy.
Imagine that you could do backups, and noone would sue you :P
Don't care. Stopped playing my DS and moved on to my PSP.
So stupid. Considering most of the pirates are the so proclamed gamers.
Casual people buy their games along with their beef at the store.
Companies patently refuse to admit that there are people who will /never/ buy anything like games/movies/music/etc. and therefore they did not lose any money. They would have never fucking had it to begin with.....
Oh shit
I was planning to get my hands on a DS Lite and have a M3-Simply chip imported from France, guess I'm too late...
Since when was France a part of Japan?
The comment makes sense if he or she lives in Japan...
*sigh* Thanks Artefact for pointing out that fact...
