Outrage from TV viewers has resulted in angry letters being sent to Japan’s Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization, with regard to a show where celebrities leisurely indulged in food far too expensive for any normal person.
The food item in question was abalone, a large edible sea snail, worth a ridiculous ¥90,000 (~$1,000) a piece.
In Japan food and cooking shows comprise a very large percentage of television programming, and ones depicting celebrities enjoying expensive dishes are no less commonplace. It is for this reason the outburst is rather inexplicable in its reasoning…

Will we be seeing complaints about too many expensive cars on TV next?

Maybe the demand is higher in Japan than other places, and if supply is low then those are contributors to market price. Then it depends if the food is farm raised (usually cheaper) or wild, then factor in specific species and location it was harvested from and that will drive up price. But yeah, $1k still seems a tad high.
that much for a piece of escargo? pssh and i though anime figures were expensive
by the way, in the picure is the girl eaing mochi? ive tried it and it's sticky and chewy lol
It's not escargo....
I like the loli in the picture.
I love abalone!!!!!....hey they're not snails...atleast not as disgusting as snails...you're probably thinking of Escargot...and thats a french thing.

Abalone is expensive, but it shouldn't be THAT expensive. Especially for people in California to be putting on their pizzas.
The article is unfair considering certain foods are ridiculously priced in Japan, when it's much more commonplace in other parts of the world.
Still though, $1000? what the hell are they cooking with it in there? gold flakes?
Hey, if the celebs are willing to pay that amount, why shouldn't we charge them just that?
People with more business sense would see a huge opportunity in opening a classy restaurant exclusively for celebs.. imagine getting to charge your patrons 100 times the normal going rate, and still being thanked afterwards..
Then you can order your own $1000 dinner-a-plate :)
People complain about just everything these days...
If they don't want them to eat expensive food, just stop watching the show.
That would cause the show to loose audience, have to cut down costs to produce it, and worst case scenario, be cancelled.
The only problem is that while the celebrities would stop eating expensive food, in no way that would help economy.
Shows like that makes rich people spend money on expensive food. Liking it or not, expensive food also requires large chains of people working on it... from catching those sea snails to processing, packing and preparing.
So, cancelling a show like that would only cause rich people to keep their money, and killing yet another industry.
If something, we should be supporting shows and new ways of making rich people spend their money so the economy can recover from the crisis.
LOL, bitching too much yeah?
The pic looks nice IMO.... ^_^
Chairman Kaga does not approve of these letters.
Hey home viewer check this shit out! OM NOM NOM!!
*troll face*
That happened all the time on Hello!Morning/HaroMoni@ -- the girls would visit expensive eateries (especially ones that served deserts) quite frequently, eating a $10 piece of desert cake without a thought.
hell i would also protest. the tv is such a wonderful invention, yet its used on crap like that. better use those resources for something more productive rather than feeding the ignorance of the masses.
I think the celebrity themselves don't eat those food during their own time because they don't want to spend that much for food or don't have that money for food.
It is more likely that the studio invite them and purchase them the food for the celebrity.
They do stuff like his on almost every episode of Arashi no Shukudai-kun and any time they play some sort of suguroku game (most of the spots are batsu/punishment but a few of the spots are some sort of delicious, amazing gourmet food, but rarely costing more than ¥10,000-15,000.
¥90,000 for one little tiny serving is ridiculous.
maybe Liu Mao Shin cooked that abalone with his Legendary Cooking Set
that why it's so expensive... you need legendary stuff to cook it!!
jealousy...part of human nature
The article has descriptions of wrath, greed, envy, and gluttony while it has nothing to do with Fullmetal Alchemist.
fail
Bullshit, i wouldnt pay even a buck to eat that damn snail.
come to indonesia, where you can get snails on a stick for a measly 20 american cents.. good value, you know?
I don't quite get them...
You mean people with the means (or the credit) to indulge in the 'finer' things in life do so on the glowy box? News to me!
I'd be pissed too. Who'd want to see people eating snails... why not eat tuna.
More of the same class warfare dribble during hard times now infecting Japan right now. I'm surprised that they're stooping this low. Meanwhile in the good ol' USSA, one group of Washingtonian idjits makes it a part of their political platform since 1995, and yet have select ppl of said group advocate the separation of wealth that they hypocritically tell us to fight against.
Japan, try to be like us and accept someone of foreign bloodlines into the Diet, but PLEASE don't go into that P.C. class warfare B.S.
Yeah, I forgot. It's only class warfare when the working people start fighting back.
Dont mention the usa, they nothing but lies in almost every matter.
If you want lies, look to China, or Russia.
>>Dont mention the usa, their GOVERNMENT nothing but lies in almost every matter.
Fixed.
Says the ppl looking at this country from the outside. It is full of lies, esp. now. If only we, as their bosses, would fire these arseholes, how would that grab you?
i always thought abalone were molluscs XD
I thought abalone is an adjective... which means fancy and expensive...
lol, thanks for bringing that up, I could have told somebody my food is "abalone"
Well... yes. Snails are molluscs.
They'd better shut their yaps about offensive food shows, unless they want to trade the good Iron Chef for our version.
Ha!
Each television program has a set budget. And if the program decided not to hire any staff, buy any props, write a script, shut down a street for a day to film, etc, and just buy nice foods, it brings in ratings.
I'm sure people watched these celebrities enjoying these foods, this is a way to get ratings.
And the added factor that it is so scandalous certainly makes things that much more interesting and noteworthy.
To me, it is like a lead character in a crime drame geting a nice suit to wear every episode, and a sporty car to drive around and bust crime with. Us commoners will never be able to afford thier 'rides', 'threads', and 'bling' (and we almost have to wonder how someone on a police officer's or detective's salary can afford this stuff anyway), but we get to live their high-ish life for 44 minutes each Tuesday at 8:00.
At the very least it's almost like a someone who recently quit somking asking another smoker to 'light-up' so they can watch them enjoy it, and do a little secondhand, without all the guilt and cancer.
well its not like they're eating loli's, UNICEF would be their in a heartbeat.
you don't see any stupid stories about an outrage over seeing someone chomping down a quadruple quarter-pounder with extra heart-stopping thick BBQ sauce smeared all over it. this outrage is plain stupid.
That's because hamburgers, especially the BBQ variety, are taken for granted in the US. Abalone isn't in Japan, so it popping up in platefuls before celebrities gets +5 to outrage.
But don't worry! We've got $55 Bling H2O water, served in a frosted glass bottle with Swarovski crystals, to compare to them. Makes you RAEG HUEG.
me too
What!? You must be kidding me.
Pretty soon they might start having complaints when well-known celebrities are seen in their Beemers and Mercs.
If they do use those vehicles.
Abalone's THAT expensive in Japan?! Wow, Koreans use it for porridge...
Koreans also use dog meat in stew...
Koreans eat dog stew too. What's your point?
I don't like to eat dogs.. they taste stringy... or maybe that was just the leash.
