Neuroscience: Porn Makes Women into Tools

tony-taka-bikini

Men who view pictures of scantily clad damsels experience similar brain activity to when they are using tools, research suggests.

Shown pictures of such ladies, brain scans apparently illustrated the same parts of the brain associated with tool use became active, whilst those associated with social cognition were less active.

Princeton Professor Susan Fiske claims:

“The only other time we have seen this is when people look at pictures of the homeless or of drug addicts because they really don’t want to think about what is going on in their minds.”

It was also found that men tended to remember such images better than they did when dealing with fully clothed females.

She insinuates that the effect could lead men to “sexualise” their colleagues at work, should their bestial eyes alight upon such a depraved image. She denies being anti-porn all the same:

“I am not saying there should be censorship but people need to know of the associations people have in their minds.”

Presenting her research, she claimed that such gravure makes men think of women as “less than human”.

They did not bother to test the brain activity of women as well; however, she did concede when asked that women, instead of physical attractiveness, considered such reasonable factors as age and bank balance.

Professor Susan Fiske lists her research interests as “stereotyping” and “discrimination”, which when combined with studies into “the objectification of women”, “ambivalent sexism” and “dehumanisation”, may suggest the results of her inquiry were a foregone conclusion…

  • The whole objectification thing is confusing, including this study.

I mean, I think most people grab for straws on the subject. Maybe people just naturally separate themselves from other kinds of thoughts and feelings when they are sexually aroused? They probably also think of their penis as a tool. Even if it’s a part of them, they are essentially viewing themselves as a tool for the sexual gratification of their mind. Or something, God this is confusing.

And if looking at material for the purpose of sexual arousal, there is no need to think about non-sexual things which are a pointless distraction really. Sexuality is just a feeling, it doesn’t matter that there’s a person behind it and it’s not dehumanizing. If a person masturbates to me and that “tool” part of the brain enacts, it doesn’t mean they’re dehumanizing me, it means they’re just not doing pointless things while enjoying looking at me for aesthetic/sexual purpose. And it’s something that naturally happens anyway because as excitement increases, the brain is essentially like in the states where one is drunk or angry, it only focuses on limited things and allocation is simple tasked.

No is going “oh, OH Ukonkivi, you’re SO smart. Do that math equation, oh yes!”

You know, unless you have a very unusual fetish.

And judging a man by their money is just as superficial as judging them by their looks, is it not? We are not our wallets. And worse yet, it’s not for some small thing like sexual gratification, when you use it as a major selecting tool in a partner, it’s like a kind of exploitation. We’re not men or individuals if you judge us by our checkbook, we’re nothing but a wad of cash.

  • Sounds biased to me as well. That said, I think its true that porn and similar trigger similar brain activity as tools, but my theory is that its because most people watching porn know its not real. The women aren’t real, the situations are fake and so is and trace of character, acting and story. Thus I believe that it doesn’t have a negative affect, the opposite in fact as most people that watch porn DON’T make men think of “women as “less than human””. The opposite in fact as this study to me clearly shows men (because only men watch porn, right?) understand porn isn’t real and that it therefor doesn’t negatively impact their view on women.

I love social studies, you can interpret things anyway you want and get away with it if you just know how to present your studies.

  • Uggh… why? Why can’t women be hot AND human beings? It’s like either or! Evolution has got a long, long way to go.

I guess I just kid myself when I imagine the 2D/3D chicks I fap to being capable of having a brain and doing something more useful… what can I say, it makes them hotter for me. Especially when they’re naturally hot without even trying while doing things that have nothing to do with sex.

I guess ultimately, women are, as a whole, completely unsatisfying without compensation.

Women’s right and freedom my ass. Now half the women are either taped into their massive coats and are looking for cures for cancer, or are just very realistic and expensive sex dolls. It’s either or, there is no third, the two never even mix unless it’s in a hentai.

    2D FTW 🙁

    • Okay….just to steer people back on track:

The article merely states that the male brain works differently when THINKING about a womans’s body vs. INTERACTING with one. ( And interacting with her mind).

NEWSFLASH: That’s actually a good thing. It means men can tell the difference between porno and real life.

  • RTFA and tl;dr, but as someone that have been living a good 24 years being a man, i learned a lot about myself: that women ARE tools. note that i say “myself”: men’s brain are designed that way. they have to hunt with tools, better their caves with tools, they have the urge to propagate their offsprings– this last part can only be done with a tool called “women”.

in return for being used as tool, a woman is guaranteed security and the opportunity to propagate her offsprings. that’s a more than even balance. if not, humans as species probably will not survive using this scheme.

also, a man is not supposed to damage his tools. when you damage your tools, your chance to reach better place in the world diminishes. the same way, he’s not supposed to cause injuries to his woman, whether physically or psychologically. lady scientist probably got hurt too much by her man.

btw, don’t you know that women feel better when her man feel better after doing this and that to (“with”) her? from man’s PoV, that’s exactly how tools would think if given sentience.

    • Speak only for urself, dude. I’m for all kinds of porn, including the extreme and violent sort, 2D and 3D, although I’ll admit that I’m rather put off by the stupid banging of even more stupid bitches that is American mainstream porn. But what you’re saying here is just plain misogynist (I never thought I’d use that word – ever >_>) and you’re only playing into the hands of feminists with this kind of bullsh1t talk. I won’t even bother to mention the myriad of logical fallacies in your argument. Just live on with that mindset and see where it gets you.

  • To be fair, that’s more or less what pornography is — a tool. I know that I personally can tell the difference between when I objectify a woman and when I value her as a person; isn’t it OK as long as I recognize that?
In addition, I shouldn’t need to point out that viewing naked pictures of a woman I don’t know is totally different than interacting with my co-workers. I’m not really interested in seeing my female friends naked.
I don’t disagree with the study– I think it’s fascinating. I just disagree with the conclusions drawn.

  • Snozzwangler says:

I like how her research was on people looking at pictures of women, and she applied her research results to a rather unrelated subject (men’s social interaction with women). That seems like a bit of a stretch to me. I’d assume that men end up recognizing the pornographic images to be just to be the means to an end (a tool for fapping). It’s probably easier since they don’t interact with the women in the images, nor do they personally know them. Pictures are just pictures. She seems to insinuate that men who view porn frequently will begin to objectify women, and that line of thinking further leads to men who view porn becoming rapists. This line of thinking is rather flawed, and it seems quite similar to the ‘video games creates killers’argument. I just don’t believe that people degenerate that easily, otherwise we’d have many more killers and rapists running around. I figure the majority of people recognize the difference between images and reality. Those that don’t, would be influenced just as easily by other sources, and had a huge problem beforehand. No real reason to blame the porn. And not much is given in comparison. I mean, what sections of men’s brains are active when looking at images of scantily clad people whom they interact with on a daily basis? How about while they are having sex with their spouse/girlfriend? How about when they’re having sex with someone they don’t really know? Too much is left unanswered for me to recognize this as a valid line of thought.

  • The upshot of all this is NOT that women are tools. Anyone that thinks that is a dumbfuck. The OBVIOUS IMPLICATIONS are that fapping and actual sex/relationships are totally different. Duhhhh….

HOWEVER…..the more HIDDEN AND FASCINATING implications are that TOOLMAKING and FAPPING (& by extension making pornographic cave drawings ) are NEUROLOGICALLY INDISTINGUISHABLE from each other.
Evolutionary biologists assert that tool making drove the selection process in human evolution. Well now a case could be made that the QUEST FOR BETTER AND BETTER PORN might also have driven it. FAPPING MADE OUR BRAINS BIGGER.

So therefore our species could be called PORNO SAPIENS.

  • I was looking at a playboy a while ago. And one of the ladys in it was posing nude (duh).while I looked at this women posing I began to get trund on. yet sadly my exstacy was blown away when I read her coment. She said that she did not want men to think of her as a playmate,or sex symbol. I then tought to my self bitch if you dident want that dont be spreading your coochi all aver the place. I dont know what you guys think but some wemon have screwd up thinking:(

  • Allow me to kill her obviously biased argument in a few words.

Her “research”, if 100% true and statistically correct, only proves men view PORN as tools.

Which they are. Tools for arousement and masturbation.

Her research, however, does NOT prove that men that watches porn also views women as tools.

Which is exactly why she didn’t do research on women… because the results would probably be that women also view porn as a tool. Or underwear ads with naked men, for that matter.

And this goes well along fallacies about rock music, games and violence, loli manga and pedophiles and ALL other misleading “researches” or assumptions like this one.

  • WTF kind of B.S. is this!?!?!?

If it demeans you, then deal with it yourself. This goes into the “Next time you have a thought, let it go” pile. I have seen some situs where men are turned into tools, but you don’t see her objection there. Get laid or something, it’ll change your mind, lady!!!!

  • Of course, because by definition pr0n is one of the greatest achievements of society, taking away many beautiful women for them to be repeatedly tea bagged and bukakked, until they are of no use anymore, making then effectively tools for those dirty money-grabbers we all love for it ^^.

In the other hand, there is a paradigm in sociology where man and woman think of each other as tools. They call it love. Up to you.

  • Porn is a tool… who the hell in their right mind get’s emotionally involved in pure fap material?

“I’d like to see what effect do pictures of 2D moe girls have on the brains of males.”

Probably the same response as with porn… however

I think you’ve got a completely different situation when it comes to hentai games, specifically bishoujo games / interactive “girl sims”.
I’d wager the “Social cognition” section of the brain fires quite a bit more.

  • Prof. Susan is a quack and full of shit. Talk about half-assed research.
BTW – I’m a woodworker and I love my tools and take very good care of them. Am I supposed to think of women when I use them? I sure as hell don’t think of my wife as a tool. There must be something wrong with me.

  • For all you US Readers, The Daily Mail is an objectionable Newspaper that basically thinks everyone who doesn’t conform to their ideas of ‘Normality’ is somehow wrong and should be banned / jailed / deported / publically flogged etc.

  • So… is she suggesting that men ought to attempt to socialize with their porn? Thinking of the porn like a tool is not the same thing as thinking of real women like tools. What she ought to have done is exposed group A to porn, group B to not porn, and then scanned their brains while they were interacting with real women. You can’t just say that because they think of porn a certain way, they also think of women that way. It does not compute.

  • “i know im right because im a Neuroscience Professor! you see this white coat im wearing yeah its because im a scientist! dont question my authority!!”

and thats what happened after she proved that porn is the cause for global warming…

  • I call total and utter bullshit on this one. Increased activity in the premotor cortex upon viewing porn makes perfect sense if you think about it, and says absolutely nothing about what is going through your head emotionally. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if females showed exactly the same results.

Stupid feminazi is stupid. Science should never be abused to force your own ideology on society.

  • This should be obvious… porn isn’t for human interaction and respect of the female form, it’s a TOOL to get yourself off with! You USE it! Some individuals can’t separate their porn from reality, but I don’t want to be grouped with just because we both watch porn! Get a grip professor!

    • Pr0n is fantasy, and fantasy will ALWAYS trump reality.

Because let’s face it: sex may have positive benefits (relaxed nervous tension, plus the endorphins released that increase the ‘feel good’ sensations, etc.), but it’s also highly overrated.

In today’s society, men objectify women and women do the same to men…. because that’s how we’re conditioned to. Through media, environment, and every other form of social interaction/connectivity. Fashion and ‘family values’ get preached about in a religious context. Family values… *snort*

There’s an underlying cause and effect there. But most of us are too scared or just choose to ignore it for the sake of convenience… and thus they perpetuate the stereotypes by complying with ‘Conventional Wisdom’.

I call bullshit on Ms Fiske’s research. -_-

    • Because she is depressed everytime she takes her clothes off, looks at her reflection in a mirror and compares it to those same pictures she used on her study. That and her lack of contact with men in her a daily life.

  • I’d like to think why the models and porn stars, obviously female ones, do their job. Is it because they actually like to be tools ?
Maybe we see them in the same way they want to be seen ?
or do we just ignore all that shit and think just about sex ?
I’d say the deep bullshitism coming from this scientist is coming right from her lack of sexual activity.

  • Didn’t all you know, that pornography instrumentalizes women, deteriorates men and kills love? For me this news is nothing new, In my country there is saying “he discovered America” – 4 hundred years after Columbus, 1000 years after Vikings and 10000 years after Asians…

        • @Pokrec

          No… love and sex are not the same for me. I tried to suggest this with the phrase ‘and by X, I mean Y’. It was intended to be funny, but in fact wasn’t, I gueass ^^;

I don’t even think, that sex is part of love. Love can lead to sex, but sex alone won’t lead to love.

By the way. Actually, I’m currently watching an anime intended for kids without any subtitles at all and I understand about 70%.
Makes you wonder how you learned your first language and if it is such a good thing to learn english at school. I certainly didn’t learn my first language by learning grammar and stuff. So I guess it isn’t really odd for me to learn english and japanese just by watching (quite a lot) of fansubbed anime.

          But I wouldn’t know, unless someone tells me, that he can understand my english ^^;
So, thank you in that matter.

        • Excuse me, I just wondered, if you seriously found, that love and sex are two words for the same thing. For me sex is only one element of love. 😉
I am from Poland but I have learned English at school. So, I respect you for learning English just from Fansubs. I learned some other languages by myself, just from a book and I try to learn Japanese by watching English – fansubbed dramas. 😉 I can watch Japanese anime and dramas because somebody does a GREAT WORK translating it to a Christian language ;-). By the “Christian language” I understand language spoken in countries with Christian majority / tradition. I would have still BIG TROUBLES watching it in original version…
And for me, your English is OK. Greetings!

        • If you mean to ask, if I am sane, than yes, I am sane. OK is an abbreviation which bears a great deal of misunderstanding, so I am not going to say, that I am OK.

I don’t really understand why you would ask me such a question, though. Did I make any mistakes in spelling? Sure, I am not from an english speaking country and never learned any english in school. Fansubs taught me english, so my writing may seem odd to you?

  • Obvious feminazi sympathies, at the very least. The fact that she didn’t feel testing women held any weight in the research is proof of that. Either that or she is just a very, very poor scientist.

  • So… basically, both men and women objectify each other, but along different priorities.

How’s treating men as disposable piggy banks any less demeaning than women as sex relief? At least, with sex, its known that the actual act of intercourse leaves a psychological impression on both individuals.

  • You know, you cannot make one argument without reversing it. How about us women? Do we see men as tools if we were to look at scantily clad men? I call BS until they make a counter-study, as this just sounds like ammo for censors to justify their crimes.

  • Well of course when people buy gravure magazines they only look at the model as mere tools, why would they want to read about them in those often boring articles?

If they wanted to read they can buy a newspaper.

  • this is a nonstop debate. the issue will continue without anyone reaching a conclusion.

our 6 year-old are already doing such visualization. i can’t blame no one. even if i wanted to, it is legal. my kid go to school and see the teach with a skirt that makes seeing the panty all too easy. the pe teacher wears her skimply clad short that tightens up to her labia, so i can’t think but see my child as being exposed to porn daily. the kids are so precociously dressed with their makeup that makes them look like their 2-3 years older than what they really are. it’s disturbing to the mind, yet our body cannot ignore it.

the trend today such as fashions, etc, will reign strong and not stop, and the images of women as objects will continue. thing swill not change over night. Susan Fiske will also not change in her opinion and remain biased.

She will continue to look at one side without exposing herself to the other. Nothing will fucking change. Wake up you piece of shit. If my little girl and boy can get through without fantasizing about pussy sucking their dicks in and dicks penetrating their holes, I will have a calm mind. But you say this and that like most everyone have researched over and over without much result or solution to the problem.

I hope she dress her 10 years old girl with thongs and have her song look at her in two-piece bikini that bring about it a transparency that clearly outlines the pubes and labia.

      • Second that.

You say that girls using miniskirts and shorts are porn? If you’re a dude, wth bro? If you’re a girl, stop being envious xD.

Fantasizing is wrong? Afaik it’s a natural thing, and what you imagine is something, but what you actually do is what matters ;).

        • im with anon above. im a deist which is basically one step above agnostic, but i still have morals, more so than some religionfags i know…morals dont come down to religion it comes down to how ur raised, if u say religion does it then ur just being lazy, u want the church to do ur job for u. i mean wars have been fueled by religion, witchburning such as anon said above, slavery was connnected to religion cuz the conquerers saw them as savages cuz they didnt folo their religion. religion has major flaws and potholes but i bet more than half of the religionfags that boast their religion havnt read their respective religious book themselves and just go on whats told to them.

        • I beg to differ. Religion has nothing to do with morals. Do you think burning people alive for witchcraft is moral? Religion isn’t your answer to everything. Religion is just another idea that man invented, a product of imagination. Since it is made by man, therefore it is flawed.

        • Social standards have already beaten morals into most atheists regardless of belief. And compassion, empathy, a sense of justice, and honesty exist in humans regardless of one’s religious beliefs. Social animals have evolved this way for the mutual survival of their species. Humans are no different.

Frankly, if the only thing leading you to delineate between right and wrong is a superstition then I’m afraid you’ve got a weak sense of morality.

After all, the only thing preventing you from committing evil is your own superstition–by your own omission, you imply that you’re incapable of treating the instinct of human compassion as a factor in your actions or beliefs. I can definitely not imagine you as a good person without the illusory threat of divine punishment, unlike most atheists and agnostics I know.

          xD.

        • I’d like to blame canada, but the guys from south park did that joke already.

So I will blame no one, as it is naturally to use prOn as a tool, and fantasize about people from the sex, you find attractive.

Only the freaking catholics think it is wrong to fantasize about those things. Damn them all to their petty hell.
