Neuroscience: Porn Makes Women into Tools

tony-taka-bikini.jpg

Men who view pictures of scantily clad damsels experience similar brain activity to when they are using tools, research suggests.

Shown pictures of such ladies, brain scans apparently illustrated the same parts of the brain associated with tool use became active, whilst those associated with social cognition were less active.

Princeton Professor Susan Fiske claims:

“The only other time we have seen this is when people look at pictures of the homeless or of drug addicts because they really don’t want to think about what is going on in their minds.”

It was also found that men tended to remember such images better than they did when dealing with fully clothed females.

She insinuates that the effect could lead men to “sexualise” their colleagues at work, should their bestial eyes alight upon such a depraved image. She denies being anti-porn all the same:

“I am not saying there should be censorship but people need to know of the associations people have in their minds.”

Presenting her research, she claimed that such gravure makes men think of women as “less than human”.

They did not bother to test the brain activity of women as well; however, she did concede when asked that women, instead of physical attractiveness, considered such reasonable factors as age and bank balance.

Via the Daily Mail.

Professor Susan Fiske lists her research interests as “stereotyping” and “discrimination”, which when combined with studies into “the objectification of women”, “ambivalent sexism” and “dehumanisation”, may suggest the results of her inquiry were a foregone conclusion…

Of course, because by definition pr0n is one of the greatest achievements of society, taking away many beautiful women for them to be repeatedly tea bagged and bukakked, until they are of no use anymore, making then effectively tools for those dirty money-grabbers we all love for it ^^.

In the other hand, there is a paradigm in sociology where man and woman think of each other as tools. They call it love. Up to you.

Allow me to kill her obviously biased argument in a few words.

Her "research", if 100% true and statistically correct, only proves men view PORN as tools.

Which they are. Tools for arousement and masturbation.

Her research, however, does NOT prove that men that watches porn also views women as tools.

Which is exactly why she didn't do research on women... because the results would probably be that women also view porn as a tool. Or underwear ads with naked men, for that matter.

And this goes well along fallacies about rock music, games and violence, loli manga and pedophiles and ALL other misleading "researches" or assumptions like this one.

"I’d like to see what effect do pictures of 2D moe girls have on the brains of males."

Probably the same response as with porn... however

I think you've got a completely different situation when it comes to hentai games, specifically bishoujo games / interactive "girl sims".
I'd wager the "Social cognition" section of the brain fires quite a bit more.

The upshot of all this is NOT that women are tools. Anyone that thinks that is a dumbfuck. The OBVIOUS IMPLICATIONS are that fapping and actual sex/relationships are totally different. Duhhhh....

HOWEVER.....the more HIDDEN AND FASCINATING implications are that TOOLMAKING and FAPPING (& by extension making pornographic cave drawings ) are NEUROLOGICALLY INDISTINGUISHABLE from each other.
Evolutionary biologists assert that tool making drove the selection process in human evolution. Well now a case could be made that the QUEST FOR BETTER AND BETTER PORN might also have driven it. FAPPING MADE OUR BRAINS BIGGER.

So therefore our species could be called PORNO SAPIENS.

Sounds biased to me as well. That said, I think its true that porn and similar trigger similar brain activity as tools, but my theory is that its because most people watching porn know its not real. The women aren't real, the situations are fake and so is and trace of character, acting and story. Thus I believe that it doesn't have a negative affect, the opposite in fact as most people that watch porn DON'T make men think of "women as “less than human”". The opposite in fact as this study to me clearly shows men (because only men watch porn, right?) understand porn isn't real and that it therefor doesn't negatively impact their view on women.

I love social studies, you can interpret things anyway you want and get away with it if you just know how to present your studies.

The whole objectification thing is confusing, including this study.

I mean, I think most people grab for straws on the subject. Maybe people just naturally separate themselves from other kinds of thoughts and feelings when they are sexually aroused? They probably also think of their penis as a tool. Even if it's a part of them, they are essentially viewing themselves as a tool for the sexual gratification of their mind. Or something, God this is confusing.

And if looking at material for the purpose of sexual arousal, there is no need to think about non-sexual things which are a pointless distraction really. Sexuality is just a feeling, it doesn't matter that there's a person behind it and it's not dehumanizing. If a person masturbates to me and that "tool" part of the brain enacts, it doesn't mean they're dehumanizing me, it means they're just not doing pointless things while enjoying looking at me for aesthetic/sexual purpose. And it's something that naturally happens anyway because as excitement increases, the brain is essentially like in the states where one is drunk or angry, it only focuses on limited things and allocation is simple tasked.

No is going "oh, OH Ukonkivi, you're SO smart. Do that math equation, oh yes!"

You know, unless you have a very unusual fetish.

And judging a man by their money is just as superficial as judging them by their looks, is it not? We are not our wallets. And worse yet, it's not for some small thing like sexual gratification, when you use it as a major selecting tool in a partner, it's like a kind of exploitation. We're not men or individuals if you judge us by our checkbook, we're nothing but a wad of cash.

I like how her research was on people looking at pictures of women, and she applied her research results to a rather unrelated subject (men's social interaction with women). That seems like a bit of a stretch to me. I'd assume that men end up recognizing the pornographic images to be just to be the means to an end (a tool for fapping). It’s probably easier since they don’t interact with the women in the images, nor do they personally know them. Pictures are just pictures. She seems to insinuate that men who view porn frequently will begin to objectify women, and that line of thinking further leads to men who view porn becoming rapists. This line of thinking is rather flawed, and it seems quite similar to the ‘video games creates killers’argument. I just don’t believe that people degenerate that easily, otherwise we’d have many more killers and rapists running around. I figure the majority of people recognize the difference between images and reality. Those that don’t, would be influenced just as easily by other sources, and had a huge problem beforehand. No real reason to blame the porn. And not much is given in comparison. I mean, what sections of men's brains are active when looking at images of scantily clad people whom they interact with on a daily basis? How about while they are having sex with their spouse/girlfriend? How about when they’re having sex with someone they don’t really know? Too much is left unanswered for me to recognize this as a valid line of thought.

To be fair, that's more or less what pornography is -- a tool. I know that I personally can tell the difference between when I objectify a woman and when I value her as a person; isn't it OK as long as I recognize that?
In addition, I shouldn't need to point out that viewing naked pictures of a woman I don't know is totally different than interacting with my co-workers. I'm not really interested in seeing my female friends naked.
I don't disagree with the study-- I think it's fascinating. I just disagree with the conclusions drawn.

RTFA and tl;dr, but as someone that have been living a good 24 years being a man, i learned a lot about myself: that women ARE tools. note that i say "myself": men's brain are designed that way. they have to hunt with tools, better their caves with tools, they have the urge to propagate their offsprings-- this last part can only be done with a tool called "women".

in return for being used as tool, a woman is guaranteed security and the opportunity to propagate her offsprings. that's a more than even balance. if not, humans as species probably will not survive using this scheme.

also, a man is not supposed to damage his tools. when you damage your tools, your chance to reach better place in the world diminishes. the same way, he's not supposed to cause injuries to his woman, whether physically or psychologically. lady scientist probably got hurt too much by her man.

btw, don't you know that women feel better when her man feel better after doing this and that to ("with") her? from man's PoV, that's exactly how tools would think if given sentience.

I guess I just kid myself when I imagine the 2D/3D chicks I fap to being capable of having a brain and doing something more useful... what can I say, it makes them hotter for me. Especially when they're naturally hot without even trying while doing things that have nothing to do with sex.

I guess ultimately, women are, as a whole, completely unsatisfying without compensation.

Women's right and freedom my ass. Now half the women are either taped into their massive coats and are looking for cures for cancer, or are just very realistic and expensive sex dolls. It's either or, there is no third, the two never even mix unless it's in a hentai.

    No... love and sex are not the same for me. I tried to suggest this with the phrase 'and by X, I mean Y'. It was intended to be funny, but in fact wasn't, I gueass ^^;

I don't even think, that sex is part of love. Love can lead to sex, but sex alone won't lead to love.

By the way. Actually, I'm currently watching an anime intended for kids without any subtitles at all and I understand about 70%.
Makes you wonder how you learned your first language and if it is such a good thing to learn english at school. I certainly didn't learn my first language by learning grammar and stuff. So I guess it isn't really odd for me to learn english and japanese just by watching (quite a lot) of fansubbed anime.

    But I wouldn't know, unless someone tells me, that he can understand my english ^^;
So, thank you in that matter.

There is no reason for one to exist. There are a lot of really desperate men out there, whereas females usually are the ones being desired. Also, this is of absolutely no relevance for the wrongness of the conclusions drawn from these results.

Very relevant however is that women would show the exact same reaction upon seeing a picture that arouses them.
