Bandai Famicon game キン肉マン マッスルタッグマッチ / Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match, or Tag Team Match M.U.S.C.L.E. as it is known outside Japan, has fetched an impressive ¥921,000 at auction. There are said to be only eight copies extant in Japan…
Via Ore-teki.
The game in action:
Although it may difficult to fathom why anyone would want to pay a million yen for this, if enough people anticipate the price as being likely to rise it immediately becomes “collectible”. As investment strategies go, it is no more insane than buying rotting paintings based on their likely appreciation in value.
The game is said to be Bandai’s first ever character game (based in this case on the Kinniku Man franchise), which may be one of the reasons for the high price… Of course nostalgia may be the greatest force at play, even if nobody ever dares play the cart.
In uncertain economic times, NES games are the new gold?
It’s not clear whether this is a record, but it certainly outstrips the high prices we have been seeing in recent auction, being more than double the ultra-rare chemical handling trainer, almost double the brand new SNES, and more than the “entire collection” of NES games. Wait a moment…

LOL... I remember playing this one on the NES when I was a wee lad... great fun.
Holy crap did Nagi Sanzenin buy it o___O
Huh.....this game got a really bad review on SomethingAwful's Rom Pit. The graphics suck....
But I love it when I do the Super Move after getting the flashing bowling ball power up!
Ah Ultimate Muscle, how I miss your Toonami days
oh god sake, i did play and own this game , where the hell i put it,, oooh noooo
Oh lawl, I can't even imagine who bought that for $10,000. I remembered playing this game on a "Mega Joy" (an NES emulator) before I got a PSX, and also have this game for my Gameboy Advance SP. The game can be quite enjoyable if you understand how to play it.... =D
I wonder if the game even works, nowadays...
I remember playing this game....
really, $10,000 for that game. i saw that same game at my local video game store for $1.50.
Looks like you're gonna make quite a profit if you act on that.
Yeah right, can't believe somebody got to fetch that much... this game is a real torture and what more, you can bring a friend to play with you.
Hold on... I PLAYED that as a kid in Taiwan! The game can't be that rare, could it?
What you played, must probably be a BOOTLEG, and not necessarily the original cartridge. This on the other hand is Nintendo Sealed for quality :P
I know that because I don't own any original cartridge games save for the ones that come with the consoles. What can I do; I live in Malaysia, and it was back in the early 90s.
Taiwan? I guess that's not Hong Kong but it's still possibly a pirate version or something.
There are 99 of them...(look at the pic)
no one is going to buy it.

The game itself wasn't rare, but this is a special edition. If I'm not mistaken the common carts were red. I saw an auction on ebay selling a green cart from yet another special edition, which had 500 copies made.
Carts like these were most likely given as prizes in contests or something similar.
my fav character of that time is the pineapple throwing Frankenstein.
LOL~~ I played this game before and still even have it here (in good condition) but lately didn't touch it....Still this game brings back all the memories when I was a child playing this game (and laughing hard because of all the characters silly moves).
My fav. would be Buffalo Man & Wars man.
