Bandai Famicon game キン肉マン マッスルタッグマッチ / Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match, or Tag Team Match M.U.S.C.L.E. as it is known outside Japan, has fetched an impressive ¥921,000 at auction. There are said to be only eight copies extant in Japan…

The game in action:

Although it may difficult to fathom why anyone would want to pay a million yen for this, if enough people anticipate the price as being likely to rise it immediately becomes “collectible”. As investment strategies go, it is no more insane than buying rotting paintings based on their likely appreciation in value.

The game is said to be Bandai’s first ever character game (based in this case on the Kinniku Man franchise), which may be one of the reasons for the high price… Of course nostalgia may be the greatest force at play, even if nobody ever dares play the cart.

In uncertain economic times, NES games are the new gold?

It’s not clear whether this is a record, but it certainly outstrips the high prices we have been seeing in recent auction, being more than double the ultra-rare chemical handling trainer, almost double the brand new SNES, and more than the “entire collection” of NES games. Wait a moment…
