Chinese Clone Site Rips Off NicoNico Douga

l_mmi_acfun_02.jpg

China’s audacity in flagrantly copying and pirating all it can continues to impress, with the news that an entire Chinese clone site of NicoNico Douga has been created, carrying the very same MADs and copying exactly the signature tickered comments of NicoNico Douga.

l_mmi_acfun_01.jpg

The (completely unauthorised) site in question is called AcFun.cn, and it runs much as you might expect a shoddy and inferior Chinese clone site to (that is to say, adequately).

Surely, we cannot help but view these sites as officially condoned, given the zeal with which political sites are censored and the complete apathy shown towards sites such as these?

Although doubtless nobody will do anything about this site, it looks as if they wouldn’t last long if there was such a thing as rule of law in China.

In addition to possible copyright violation of Nico IP, there are apparently patents held by Nico on their tickered text, and of course it practically goes without saying that what video content isn’t lifted from Nico constitutes unauthorised use of full anime episodes and similar.

Still, this is China… And neither are Nico entirely innocent in all this.

"unauthorised". Anyway oh well everything gets pirated eventually. This is really no big deal.

Agreed. This is just the same argument that organisations such as the RIAA take. The thing is, so what if something is copied. After all pretty much everything we have today is based off a copy of something else at some point.

Besides, people who stumble onto this crappy Chinese copy will leave if they don't know what it is, and if they do know they'll be regular nico browsers anyway gone to have a good laugh at the imposter.

What do you think _chineese_ people should do at original Nico Nico site? It's japanese only site and foreigners aren't welcome there. I think they do a good thing by allowing analogous service to a local folks.

not to be a jerk, Artefact, I think most of the same lines apply to your site as well; though you certainly held the threshold much better than those chinese magazines/video sites.

of course it's your freedom to pickup this piece of news from ITmedia, posted in 2008/06; but a little heads-up would be nice.

btw, all those videos are hosted externally, so simply taking the site down won't do any good.

What part of "site design" do you not understand?

If you can't tell the difference, there's no helping you. This site is no different from Nico, YouTube, 4ch or any similar site, did you miss that too?

"What part of “site design” do you not understand?"

That implies you used that term in the article, which you didn't. I lol'd

Besides, the comment you're replying to has nothing to do with site design, it's about content. Something you mentioned in the article.

Funny that you're having a go at people in these comments for not replying to points when you aren't doing it either...

If you don't like things that are posted here, then gtfo.

Its not like you're forced to come here. Go back to where you came from, you like it better there, right?

I like having the option of browsing the amusing articles here without too much hassle in searching the net.

Its like complaining newspapers reporting on the same accident or something.

Shall I say "if you don't like comments that are posted here, then gtfo"?

The commenting system is here so that people can express both their agreements and disagreements on the articles. Or do you think it would be better if all comments posted were like "all hail the mighty Artefact, for he brought us this article(which is about something that happened more that half a year ago)"?

I'm quite happy for there to be critical, and at times very lively activity in the comments (which are never censored for such reasons).

However, I will not accept any criticism based on how new or old articles are - posting is based solely on such considerations as what will be of interest to users. If it happens to be new, so be it, but I do not appreciate the endless "this did not happen yesterday" criticism.

Rest assured, these articles interest many irrespective of their age.

Isn't 60% of your site's content stolen from gravure magazines, artist sites (who often don't like their stuff getting reposted), nicovideo, and etc?

    Avatar of Artefact
    Comment by Artefact

    Then why are you here?

You can say the same of YouTube and Nico, would you like to complain about their success? Could you point what this has to do with cloning an entire site whilst you're at it?

    Comment by Anonymous
    15:43 27/01/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

    Lolz

You do realize that YouTube and Nico "rip off" each other's videos too, don't you?

What AcFun does is no different, and the uploaders DOES indicate where the video clips are originally from. Moreover, there are a considerate amount of original videos on AcFun too.

"Cloning an entire site"? Have you ever visited AcFun yourself? If you have, would you please tell me how is AcFun similar to Nico, apart from the tickered texts?

And as for the tickered texts, in your article you wrote "there are apparently patents held by Nico on their tickered text". However, I couldn't see this claim anywhere in the ITmedia article you linked. So how did you come up with that? Did you even do proper research on, say, IPDL before you draw this conclusion?

Oh, one last thing. So you didn't deny the fact that "60% of your site’s content's stolen from gravure magazines, artist sites, nicovideo, and etc", did you.

    Avatar of Artefact
    Comment by Artefact

Their users rip them off, in an unauthorised fashion. The tickered text is enough of a rip-off for any reasonable person to realise.

I didn't draw any conclusion - I said "apparently"; Japanese commentators have at various times claimed that Nico has some IP in this area.

Come to think of it, you weren't able to respond to any of my points. Why would I waste my time responding to yours?

It's okay for Youtube users to rip videos from Nico, since they must also be Nico users in order to get videos from Nico.

Do you agree with the paragraph above? If you do, then please change "YouTube" to "AcFun.cn", read it again, and see if it still makes sense.

In your article you claimed that AcFun is "inferior" to Nico, which is absolutely NOT true. The fact is lots of Chinese people, many of whom fluent in Japanese, go to BOTH Nico Japan and AcFun.

As for the tickered texts, well of course the almighty Japanese Commentators are always right, so I guess it's okay to base your judgments entirely on what they said. However, are you saying that the tickered texts alone makes AcFun "an entire Chinese clone site" of Nico?

I give Artefact a hard time on all kinds of things, but SC is meant to be such a resource, and everyone here credits sources without lifting text wholesale. Plus, streaming sites have external embedding for a reason. This talk of 'stolen' content here is ludicrous.

Perhaps two subtle anti Chinese posts so close to one another? I'm feeling a bit of anti chinese undertones from this and that magazine entry. Truth be told, it has me upset almost to the point of jumping onto the hate Artefact bandwagon, but I'll resist.

Hate the site, hate the magazine, and hate the pirates that orchestrate this, but don't hate a country and its people because of that.

    Avatar of Artefact
    Comment by Artefact

Ridicule and exasperation rather than hate is the intended effect. As I have said in comments elsewhere, I consider China's development a very positive thing (in general), and in recent history Japan, and less recent history America, have done the same sort of thing.

It's more to do with being poor and developing than being Chinese. Still, it's reasonable to take a sceptical view of it.

And DeGrade, I'm glad you have noticed we take our ethical stance seriously. We always link to the original sources, never plagiarise, and try wherever possible to promote the artists and similar featured.

Additionally, we try to promote distribution which ensures the original creators are supported, without patronising the audience.

I hope a sound balance has been struck.

Perhaps if it wasn't for the international copyright immunity that China obviously enjoys while the rest of the technologically advanced world would be thrown in prison for life for half of the blatant copies, I'd 100% agree with you, as it is I still agree with you. However there is something to be said of a Government that does not respect IP and allows this kind of virulent copyright infringement.
