Shogakukan, the mega-publishing house behind many famous manga magazines such as Shounen Sunday (and incidentally also an owner of North American anime/manga company Viz Media), announced the results for their 54th Annual Manga Awards earlier this week.
The winners of this year’s awards are all likely unknown to most international fans, but in past years the Shogakukan awards have been bestowed to popular series such as Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Inu-Yasha and Detective Conan.
The awards follows the same format as last year’s awards, divided into the four categories of Children’s, Shoujo, Shounen and General:
Children’s Category
Naisho no Tsubomi (A Secret’s Bud)
Author: Yu Yabu-uchi
Serialized in Shougaku Go-Nensei
Shounen Category
Kurosugemu (Cross Game)
Author: Mitsuru Adachi
Serialized in Weekly Shounen Sunday
Shoujo Category
BLACK BIRD
Author: Kanoko Sakurakoji
Serialized in Betsucomi
General Category
Gaku ~ Minna no Yama (Peak ~ Everyone’s Mountain)
Author: Shin-ichi Ishizuka
Serialized in Big Comic Original
The official awards ceremony will take place on March 3 in Tokyo, where the authors will receive a trophy and an award of ¥1,000,000.
Looking at the past awards, we can see that coincidentally the vast majority of their awards go to titles they publish; last time they graciously gave out one to Kodansha, and over their history they have given out awards to 20 such titles, out of hundreds…

Yeah!!! Black Bird!..go go Black Bird!!!finally some recognition for....OK! OK!- I have no idea about ANY of these titles! never even heard of Black Bird- lol.
This makes as much sense as the Oscar Nom's in the US. Don't you love when an Industry gives it's own awards out? no Biased there- lol. For anyone who cares "MILK" will win best picture (and a slew of others) because #1 Sean Penn, #2 Left needs a back-pat, #3 to make-up for "BrokeBack" losing...and #4 the gay thing due to Prop 8 being voted down by over 70% of Californians. Then again I predicted "MILK" the moment I saw the trailer in November- lolol.
This was a rigged election... I refuse to accept these results... this was decided by angry fat guys in basements...
You wanted Naruto or Bleach to win the shounen category? ಠ_ಠ
ಠ_ಠ indeed.
How about the other mangas ranks that aren't also anime bassed?
Or at least not these mangas that are overpopular there.
Becouse none of these are of my taste.
Want to see some lower ranked ones.
Winners are voted by the readers not fans.

Oh boy, baseball manga! How original!
What the hell? Mitsuru Adachi is getting an award in the Shounen Category!? To be honest I'm surprised and his manga is still selling at all, when his manga are all same old same old baseball titles without much creativity nor improvement in artwork for like the pass 20 years...
i think you should read some of his works before you judged.Artwork styles,he ain't but when it comes to visual storytelling,he is the master.
Quick fact.
- This company is owned by Shueisha, the parent company of rival mag Shounen Jump
- Viz is co-owned by them AND Shueisha, making them partners with their own parent company (a bit weird but that's the truth lol)
So does it make it like...incest o_O
Actually Shueisha was split off from them many, many years ago, not the other way around. They have since become separate companies, though they are apparently, together with Hakusensha, part of a larger publishing group.
Pressed the wrong buttons, anyways, Adachi still has a large following in Japan, and baseball based story sells well in Japan. That, and the fact that he always manage to get both audience (shounen AND shoujo) to read his mango means that he still is a hot commodity for any publishing company, now that Takahashi Rumiko has dried up quite a bit.
even though every manga of his is the same story, characters etc. with only a different setting ? :(

ಠ_ಠ indeed.
Mitsuru Adachi never ceased to produce great manga.
Cross Game is becoming an anime this year. Should be great...
Holy crap. Naisho no Tsubomi getting an award? :D
Cross Game deserves for best sports I don't know about shounen. And Cross Game hasn't ended yet and will continue this spring =/
As an Adachi fan... Cross Game improved everything bad of all Adachi's past work(The pacing, character development etc.)
Unless there is some stupid twist or stupid endings(like in H2, although you might argue with me with how the pair ended up. I wouldn't have a problem with it if the ending pair had the most character development but nooo... I'll spare the details since its a major spoiler)
Loli raepan manga got awarded? xD
lol I wonder if Quen chose that particular page on purpose.
If loli raep really was in children's category manga, I must say it must be one most those "early otaku eduation" (like that famous picture of the baby and the Shana hug-pillow XD)
I actually got the pages for both the shoujo and children's books from the links given on the Shogakukan awards page; those are the first pages that appear when you click "Read Inside", so apparently someone at Shogakukan is also a fan of that sort of stuff. ^^
