$6,500,000 Akiba Maid Sex Parlour Busted

A major Akiba “massage” parlour offering the experience of sex with maids, cosplayers and crossdressers, has been shut down by police, and its management arrested.
The establishment, which served upwards of 30 patrons daily and had revenues of some ¥540,000,000 over 3 years, was found by police to be in violation of various regulations forbidding such enterprises in Akiba.
The massage parlour, called “Melrose”, operated out of 13 rooms in a short stay apartment building. However, the management had reported the business to authorities as being a dispatch operation, sending its girls out, which would not have been an offence in the locality.
This was not the case; we hear that the operation employed dozens of girls who dressed as maids, men, etc, who rented their bodies for ¥10,000-12,000 for 40 minutes, using the rooms comprising the establishment.
As a result, anti-brothel ordinances came into play and police acted; it is not clear what they were doing in the 3 years since the business started.
The operator (33) and manager (46), along with three male employees, have all been arrested, though strangely it seems police did not see fit to arrest any of the female employees plying their trade at the venue.

Prostitution in Japan is defined really weirdly. There's a ton of stuff that goes on here that would definitely get shut down in America as prostitution, but isn't legally prostitution here. A lot of it has to do with whether or not the act of selling sex was considered an 'individual contract' between man and woman (allowed) or part of a brothel service contract between man and 'company' (not allowed).
I imagine it's to prevent coerced participation, although I have no way of knowing how well it works.
It also makes arrests for illegal activity really hard because it's hard to prove that it's a brothel service and not just a bunch of repeat individual contracts. The presence of the dudes running it was probably what made them arrestable.

It only started going downhill like 2-3 years ago though. Up to that point, it was a pretty nice place to live. Also, violent games are not really "banned", and we still need a precedent for determining just how illegal Lolicon really is here. The odds are bad though.
But then again even if the german cops arrest you with marihuana or hashish they most often do nothing.

Don't ever go into a massage parlor expecting something like this in Akiba. Seriously, don't be that stupid. This place was the odd exception. Most massage parlors are JUST massage parlors, despite the cosplay staff.
Japanese in Akiba are already weary of foreigners because we're dumb ****s who can't behave ourselves in maid cafes. We don't need any help looking worse.
Doesn't surprize me... everytime I hear news about how there are some maid cafe that offer "private time", "a room to play games with maids", "personal massage" and other stuff like that, I always thought to myself that there must be some maids that goes one step further with proper payment.
You know, not many girls are eager to work in jobs where they absolutely KNOW the clients are there because they have some sort of lust for them... if they are, either they like it or they are there for the money.

Actually, maid cafes don't usually pay their maids any more than any other part time job does (9 to 10 dollars per hour), and most cafe jobs are ONLY part time. The girls work there because it's basically otaku-esque playtime all day that they get paid for.
It is against most cafes' rules to ask about staff's personal life, shifts, to wait for them after work, touch them, harass them in any way, be drunk or misbehave in any way.
Most of the maids on the staff in normal maid cafes are otaku just like the clients, and they are there to TALK WITH the relatively socially impaired clientele. Many maids are also frequent customers of their own and other cafes as well. Also, the customers would freak shits if they found out their maids were selling themselves. That just doesn't happen in a cafe and nobody I know wants it to.
The game 'rooms' are often not rooms, just curtained off areas (sometimes not even curtained off), and 'private time' is usually called 'communication,' the option to buy a set amount of time to have one-on-one conversation with the maid of your choice, where there won't be any other customers present that she needs to attend to.
There are now also new maid cafes aimed at tourists where conversation is limited to order taking and serving, and creepy dudes go to gawk at the maids because the maids are trained to act stupid and cute, and the uniforms tend to be more attractive. Most otaku find these places really creepy.
By the way, geishas weren't prostitutes either. They were conversation artists and performers. There was a separate set of professions involving the sale of sex.
I'm a girl. If I had a visa that allowed it, I wold love to work in a decent cafe.
