Sales numbers for BD anime releases in 2008 have finally become available, and are presented here. The figures reveal a strikingly good performance for anime featuring large robots.
Unlike DVD sales, BD sales numbers remain difficult to ascertain in Japan, so the sales ranking is informative as to what releases are dominating sales on the next video format of the future…
Notes
- This chart includes sales from July 07 – December 15, 2008.

What is most obvious here is just how much Macross F and Code Geass R2 (especially Macross) dominated BD sales during the latter months of 2008…
The time period for the information collected is actually less than half of the year, but because BD is still in the process of supplanting the DVD (meaning many people are still switching over to BD players from DVD) and that 2 huge titles (Macross and Geass) both went on sale in August, the top 8 BD releases for this time period are also the best selling 8 BD releases for all of 2008.
Some new BD versions of older titles also made it onto the chart, such as the Ghost in the Shell movie, Innocence, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and the old classic Lupin movie, The Castle of Cagliostro (which is definitely a must-see for those who haven’t had the pleasure).
Gundam 00 did not do nearly as well as Macross or Geass (despite the current Gundam series trouncing Geass R2 in TV ratings), a large part of which can be attributed to the BD version of the show going on sale several months after the DVD release (which debuted in January), most likely resulting in DVD sales consuming a fair share of what otherwise would have been BD purchases.

I think you mean Toki o Kakeru Shoujo. Sora o Kakeru Shoujo is airing now.
Thank you. Sora o Miageru Shoujo..., Sora o Kakeru Shoujo and Toki o Kakeru Shoujo's titles all get wrapped up together in my head due to their similarity...
The english translation is correct though...
mostly Gundam, Geass and Macross.
I'm bit confused... in the chart, are those Gundam 00 from season 1 or season 2?
Season 1 - Second Season doesn't go on sale until Feb.
Blu-Ray is the format of the rips of the future xD
Sorry if I missed reading something, but do you have any idea if the Blu-ray sales rankings are dominated by mecha shows *because* there's a lack of other types of shows on Bluray? Or is it that otaku just like seeing giant robots kicking ass in higher quality?
I can give some ideas, but as I'm not in nor an expert on this particular industry, they are only ideas...
-One big part of it is that most anime shows are not getting BD releases yet - mostly the larger, big name series are the ones receiving BD treatment.
-Several of the big name titles coming out in the last half year have been mecha shows.
Combine the two and it's not surprising that the list came out this way.
That too but also consider that fans of mecha are usually tech geeks as well, craving for the best viewable quality for their favourite shows (like me).
Certainly otaku are more likely to be owners of BD players than the average populace; fans especially into mecha might very well care more about visual quality than other otaku, but that would be pretty hard to determine precisely.
It's not just that they "care more". It's also that there is something to see. A lot of shows look no different when you boost the resolution. Shows with a lot of CG tend to have details that were hidden by the lower resolution.
Ah okay. If you're right then that's pretty much what I thought as well. Thanks man.
The 00 listed there, is that for season 1 only?
As a serious mecha fan, I couldn't be happier about this. The mecha genre has been going through a renaissance of sorts, and this is the proof. Here's hoping that great mecha series continue to grace televisions and computer monitors across the world this year!
Yes, I too am excited about the comeback of the mecha genre!
The lack of ef on this list is disturbing.
That BD came out after Dec 15th, so it's ineligible to be here.
BD is slowly dominating the DVD era
"It's a Sony!"
it sure is :P
So why does everyone love code gaess? Seriously I thought that show was utter shit. This is one of those things I don't see the appeal like Dragonball Z
Well, there is a huge fangirl contingent, for starters.
You thought it was seriously bad, but many people (as far as I can tell) thought it was hilariously and entertainingly bad.
I guess, like deluxe B-movies?
(Disclaimer: I have yet to watch Geass. I'm just giving the impression that the discussions on the interwebs gave me.)
the robots occupied almost all TVT
bravo TVT
