Keanu Reeves Leads as Spike in Cowboy Bebop Movie

Distinguished actor Keanu Reeves will play the role of Spike Spiegel in Twentieth Century Fox’s upcoming cinematic adaptation of the classic series “Cowboy Bebop”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Reeves’ involvement in the project became known during last summer, but this report stands as the first confirmation through official channels of his taking on the lead role of memorable space cowboy Spike.
Reeves has expressed considerable interest in the anime series, and is reported to be quite the fan of the show.
Questioned about the project last December, Reeves had the following to say:
“Oh yeah, cool. We’re trying to do that.”
The question of whether or not he is the right man for the role of one of recent anime’s most popular male characters is likely to be heard with some frequency from here on out, as the project now seems to be picking up steam in its development…
Much as with a certain earlier title, the prospects seem mixed…

Cool/laid back does not translate to having only one facial expression! IMO if there's ANYONE who can pull off a Spike it's Brad Pitt. If anyone has any objections I have two words: Fight Club
Fight club was good, but fuck that, thats just angry and crazy, brad in the mexican shows a much more diverse range of expressions and emotions.
He might be able to pull it off, but catching that laid back style of spike is going to be hard.
He doesn't just need to act as spike. He must move, walk, run and fight as Spike. Especially the fighting scenes has me worried.
I'm assuming the "distinguished" part was sarcasm.
I'll leave that up to you to decide...

two things americans cannot do right in anime: slow down the speed of the character's mouth when speaking to english and find voice over artist who will put any emotion or talent in their roles. expection to the rules were cowboy bebop, trigun, and DBZ series. i wait for movie with palms on face
If you think DBZ had good voice acting then all of your opinions on voice acting are hence forth null and void.
Eh, wasn't that fond of Bebop or Trigun's English voice acting. FMP and GITS did it correctly though imo.
yuyu hakusho is always used as a good example. i was rather fond of outlaw starts.
my biggest concern is if he can keep the attitude and does he have the proper voice? i don't know steve blum just has this sound that you recognize him and he just sticks. ill have a hard time saying that's spike, if its the guy from speed.
I'm actually quite fond of Bebop, Trigun and GITS. I have every episode of all of them. I thought they had really good voice acting. But of course like all things it could be improved.

Reeves is actually a bit old for the role, at this point in his career, but a slightly more grizzled Spike won't kill the story.
Reeves doesn't have a lot of range, but Spike is deadpan enough that Reeves can probably handle the job. Of course, I'd rather see someone else in the role, but having an anime-based major action movie with a major star on US theater screens can only be good for anime as a whole. If its a decent movie, the results could be very good indeed.

Actually, if the role desires voice range from Reeves, he MIGHT be able to do it. If anyone has seen the Kid's Story segment from the Animatrix, you'll know what I'm talking about. It was the first in a very long time I've ever heard Keanu speak in a non-deadpan voice. I don't know what got him to speak differently than in the actual Matrix movies, but it's there.
I guess it's up in the air whether this might Keanu break his typecast voice, or be rendered the way he's always been.
