This is a likeness of Korean actress Song Hye Kyo, general idol and star of a score of Korean dramas .
The CG version is now fairly famous, having actually been done in 2006, so we might think a more recent effort could have even better results.
This was done using 3Ds MAX; you can see creator Max Edwin Wahyudi’s moderately detailed walkthrough at CG Arena.
The details of this emerged in the computer generated girl gallery, so visiting that page may be of interest if you have not already done so.

heh i already meet the person directly in indonesia when teaching a workshop. He show it how this is done!
And i must say it fairly complex, you need zbrush program and rendering technique.
and it finished after 3 month! :(
CG nowadays are getting better and better till we can't even know that it's fake at first glance.
Haha oh wow.
looks like the manager of samsung khan
FBH HWAITING!!
I've used 3Ds MAX, and it's an awesome program, been working with it for 3 years now.
the hair looks kinda off because doing it in 3D eats up a lot of computer memory to render it and so the low detail, still 3Ds MAX in 2006 was still pretty top notch but the computer they used might not have been.
still a great feat by any means.
Didn't even know the top pic was fake until I read the article, very impressive.
holy balls
How come so many commenting here have this avatar?

The thing 3D still needs to get right to be completely convincing is hair. The face is perfect, but the hair looks like it was added one with the brush tool in Photoshop.
Damn right. The only things that would hint that this is a model is the hair and the weird gap on the right edge of the mouth. If you see it in a lower resolution like in the second pic, though, that gap emulates Kyo's smile just like it was intended to.
Hair is the next frontier. I too wonder what could be done today.
On a slightly related note: Dont't you think computer games will have this visual quality in about ten years? The thought excites me...
I think so; right now Square is next to offer a pre-rendered-like gameplay graphics in Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It seems pretty cool at the moment and only can improve.

Maybe in the next generation consoles we will see more realistic and dynamic visual wise games.
That doesn't look photo-realistic at all? Mass Effect looked more realistic over a year ago.
thanks

It is about real-time rendered gameplay/cutscene graphics, department in which Mass Effect may get behind in some aspects. Some high resolution ME screenshots so you can judge:

In the other hand, about photorealism, you can't take that much into account as the game goes by the FF character design and setting; which is pretty cool imo.
Agreed. But like the article said, it was done in 2006. I'd like to see what the artist could do today.
I might imagine it, bur her eyes look kinda empty.
Wow, I can't tell the difference anymore.
I've seen Song Hye Kyo in quite a few dramas and I didn't recognize think the likeness was her when I first saw it. Still, considering it was done in 2006, it's pretty impressive.
She needs hair. XD
The top picture has hair, and that is no photo. ;)
when i see his name, he should be indonesian. and then i check at the link to make sure of it, it's true
