Several large stores have recently released rankings of their best-selling galge/eroge/visual novels for 2008, allowing to see which of the last year’s crop attained the most favor from eroge fans.
Little distinction is made between the various types of bishoujo type games, such as pure visual novels or hardcore eroge, but the results are still interesting to look at:
Notes:
- Tora no Ana figures only cover games released in the first half of 2008. Softmap and Getchu’s rankings are for the entire year.
- The data for Tora no Ana’s numbers are from its main Akihabara store; Softmap’s are from its main Osaka store.
- Links to the game’s Amazon or Getchu sales pages are provided to aid in identification.

The preferences of the different store’s customers seems to not vary much, as many names keep reappearing and with To Heart 2 and Fortune Arterial at the top of all three lists.
Recent visual novel-turned anime Chaos;Head did quite well, unsurprising given the large amount of buzz and rather outlandish publicity the series had generated.
The selection of games shown here may not live up to some banner years (as 2004 / 2005), and there does seem to be a surplus of sequels/continuations of older titles.
Still, I think most avid eroge players will be satisfied, as they’re sure to find at least some of their favorites on these lists?

Meh, it was almost a given that ToHeart would be relatively high.
suxs none of these games are translated
Chaos Head is
if you look around the interbutts, there are some groups who translates and patches them for the english speaking audience...
... and finish about 1 game per year. They can't be blamed, it's a shitload of work and they're doing it in their free time. IMO you're better off learning Japanese. You won't be able to read much without a Kanji dictionary at first, but what better way to learn than by playing eroge and reading manga? Being able to watch anime raw is a nice side effect too.
kjjjjjjjjj
I wish they'd translated these games D: Im a little surprised to see Koihime Musou isnt up their, especially after that one guy bought so many copies XD
Look again. Shin Koihime Musou is up there. And it was released on the 26th December if I remember correctly. The original Koihime Musou was released in Jan 2007, so no way that would be on the list.
I'm kind of surprised To Heart 2: Another Days did so much better than Little Busters! Ex, and I know a lot of hardcore fans are going to rage over G-Senjou no Mahou ranking lower than games by bigger companies, even if they were just fandiscs. This was a really good year for fandiscs.
...I thought the Chaos;Head visual novel was non-ero. :/
It is, and the names for these rankings ranged from "galge" to "eroge" to "PC games"; we used eroge just as a compromise term as it seems to be one of the more widely used names...
Put another way, if we titled the article "2008 Eroge, Visual Novel, Bishoujo Renai Simulation Game & Galge Sales Rankings" it would be a bit much.
Lol Artefact, that's never stopped you before -__^
Hm...then how about "2008 Japanese Game Sales Ranking"? XD
That's only when it preserves impact.
If it helps, I originally named this "2008 Galge Sales Rankings", you can think of this post under that name if you prefer.
All this fuss over one title...
This is the comment section - where we take the truly important things very seriously.
It's kinda surprising to see D.C. II Plus Communication on the list even though it's released 12-25-08
Shin Koihime Musou on 26th Dec. But still up there as well.
Hmm.. well when saw this post, I wonder if there would be ever a list of the top selling English translated Ero-games? There are so few publishers for these type of game... Oh well these games may not be translated yet, but there's a hope right?
Chaos Head isn't an eroge... wth. Just gore-y
Sigh, desu~
See the comment thread about 3 main comments above this.......
Less numbers, more headline images! Though I guess I can head to the channel for that.
"G線上の魔王 / G Senjou no Mahou" should be "G Senjou no Maou" or "Maoh," depending on what romanization you prefer.
・ω・
I prefer "Maoh".
Thanks, I was bound to make a typo somewhere in there.
i am surprised to not see any illusion title, considering its internet fame.
Internet != Japon's preferences
I'm surprised to hear that ToHeart 2 AD did so well, considering that the 初回限定版 first release edition has been in the bargain bins for \1980 in Akiba since summer time.

The top eroge outsells the top anime DVDs!
Interesting, thanks!
While we're passing out links, I'd like to once again recommend Hongfire as a good source for foreign eroge players...

I'm kind of sad that Sumaga isn't on the list. But oh well, Nitro+ games hardly ever top the charts.
Pretty spot-on. Though there are a few games that I thought would be contenders. Clannad full voice not up there is surprising, considering the fan base of the franchise. 暁の護衛 was pretty good. 戦女神ZERO has good game play. さかあがりハリケーン and MagusTale Infinity are personal favorites, so is 11eyes -罪と罰と贖いの少女-.
not konpaku mahjongg, it's KonBoku
