The scope of doujinshi, or unofficial fan-works of existing anime, manga or game series is gigantic, generating over ¥55 Billion (over $600 Million USD) in 2007 alone.
Most otaku know one of the main reasons for the huge proliferation of doujinshi is the fan-artist’s freedom (or sometimes even the original artists) to insert the series’ characters into erotic situations that would be unthinkable in the original work.
Below is shown exactly how much of the total amount of doujinshi for different series sold at one major retailer is of the ero-kind, as opposed to the tamer brand of non-H doujinshi:
Notes
- This chart covers the catalog listings of Tora no Ana, one of the biggest and most well known doujinshi retailers in Japan.
- The results represent titles on sale during January – December 27 2008. This means that no Comiket 75 (Dec. 28-30) titles are included.
- The “Ero %” figure represents the total percentage of doujinshi that are 18禁 / Adult Only.

The average percentage of ero doujinshi to total doujinshi listed here is 55.6%, meaning 44.4% of the books here are non-ero in nature.
As noted in our previous Ero-Doujinshi vs Doujinshi Ranking article, certain titles are much more prone to ero fan works.
Popular titles which have a decent, but not overwhelming amount of fan service elements included in the show/manga/game mostly have high ero ratings – Toradora, Kannagi, Code Geass and Macross all display ratings of over 72%.
Doujinshi based off visual novels are somewhat deficient in the ero ratings (Clannad, Little Busters), something that could perhaps be explained by the perceived lack of a need to make ero fan works when the original source material often include ero scenes themselves?
I have personally always believed that this sort of explanation accounts in some part for the low(er) amounts of doujinshi some series receive – especially service heavy shows along the lines of Ikkitousen or Sekirei receive less doujinshi adaptations than would be expected given the series’ popularity.
The amount of Touhou doujinshi is staggering, as always, and the vast abundance of non-ero books remains much more prevalent than ero versions.
Perhaps what is responsible is the lack of any strong narrative in the games themselves, encouraging fans to create their own?

Woah, 100% on Kodomo no Jikan.
and on to love-ru
I think with Gonzo's financial troubles and the popularity of hentai we may well see a Mega Milk animated hentai.
whats the source of the Yumiko pic at the top? it looks good enough to be official.
i dare to throw my old theory back in: many series don't offer much playground for sexual couplings, or the fans deem the series to be "too holy to be violated".
romantic, girls manga-like or marginally erotic doujinshi seem not to be popular either, and yuri manga usually falls in that category. which, at least to me, explains the lack of marimite or touhou doujinshi.
if anything, you'd find classic adult manga with randomly added monsters, unrecognisable half-drawn gar characters, or just plain futanari.
but who would read a futa manga with yumi and/or sachiko in it? i sure wouldn't.
It's because you usually get your 'romance' or 'whatever you want to see' fix within the canon, so making doujinshi is pretty pointless. Like drawing an ecchi doujin of Bible Black; you already got enough in the original work.
Fans want to see what they don't show in the canon, only what they heavily imply (or even don't imply at all).
Kodomo no Jikan FTW
I <3 Loli's XD
>Toro no Ana
lol XD
Poor Quen...
Damn it all.
cvcv
It makes sense, because all of us like different characters and sometime want to pair them up with characters that we know will never happen within the actual series. So Doujin is a really smart and successful way to express that
Let's just say it as "fanfics given a graphic form."
For some reason I think doujins do their "shipping" work way better than what I could think of.
Just thought you might want to fix one of the titles:
狼と香辛料 / Spice and Wold
Nothing major, but still kinda bugs me since I love the series and it's a pretty blatant typo.
Thanks, it was a silly mistake.
im abit suprise to see Shakugan no Shana fall on the bottom list in comparison with other series
yay for Touhou project...
maintaining the most doujin yet has less ero-work than an other series...
Those are some amazing figures. I had no idea that ero doujinshi was so massively popular. There are obviously tons of Japanese guys that can't get laid. What a ready-made money market.
Total 571 doujinshi for Miku? Nice for a year old software. xD
Need more Aria ero.
Absoloutly not !
lolwat? I've never seen any Gintama ero manga.
Wow @ Hitman Reborn...
Yaoi much?
i havent seen any non-yaoi reborn doujins... are they not interested in the girls there?
The source lists Reborn as having 1797 女向 (Female oriented) books out of the 1801 total, which makes for 4 non-yaoi doujins.
lol @ the 100% for ToLOVEru
Yeah, neither To-LOV-ero nor Ero no Tsukaima surprised me very much in that regard :P
Expected a higher number for Strike Witches though.
As noted, these figures do not include C75 doujinshi, and C74 occured when Strike Witches was only a month into its TV broadcast - certainly a small amount of time for doujinshi artists to produce works based on the series.
Kodomo no Jikan 15/15/100.0
Just as expected from Japan.
I would buy them^^
Gintaro? WHERE?
Total 571 doujinshi for Miku? Nice for a year old software.
Who could ever know that a characterized software would have such impact to the world. If only Microsoft uses the OS-tans in their product, that would be awesome.
Because Miku is just. That. Awesome.
It's easy to characterize Miku with the software because it is, afterall, a vocaloid, with its unique voice and stuff like that... but operating systems... that's a different story =S... though it might help sales a little bit for microsoft... and having some OS-tan default backgrounds would be nice.
Miku is nothing less than a virtual idol.
As always statics are staggering~ they have their surprising and unsurprising moments as you read down the list.
Rofl holy mao for 3% ero with Marimite.
Hetalia had more doujins than Bleach (okay, not by much, but still). Wow. I knew it was popular, but I didn't think there would be so many doujinshi for it. And knowing how many people planned to draw Hetalia doujins for FuyuComi...
Ero...does the list includes Yaoi and Yuri?
Yes for both, although Yuri barely exists as an ero category by itself and that sort of thing usually falls under "Male Oriented".
BL doesn't fall under "ero" category either.
yea to-love-ru,Zero no Tsukaima, Mahou Sensei Negima was no surpise because we all wanted to see the protangist fuck his harem girls instead of running away. to-love-ru plot is kinda boring it's much better seeing them taking advantages.
