Fall 2008 Anime 2ch Popularity Ranking

A ranking of the number of 2ch threads started on new Fall 2008 late-night anime has been compiled and is presented here translated for your examination.
As 2ch is the center point of otaku culture online, it should serve as a rough gauge of series’ popularity through word of mouth:
Note:
- Only new series are included, so no Gundam 00: 2nd Season, Nodame Cantabile Paris, etc.
- Given the vagaries of online anonymous posting on sites like 2ch this list is certainly not a reliable ranking of series’ popularity – as DVD/BD sales or TV viewership would be – but it would be foolhardy to dismiss it completely out of hand given 2ch’s importance in the Japanese otakusphere.

No big upsets appear present – perhaps Ga-Rei Zero‘s high ranking might be a tad surprising, beating out A Certain Magical Index.
Kannagi and Toradora! taking the top two spots is a no-brainer, but one has to wonder how many of the Kannagi threads were hate threads focused on the recent scandal.
The Fist of the North Star spinoff, Raoh’s Tale, did not generate much discussion, as expected, and shoujo series Skip Beat’s doing poorly is also expected, as male-oriented shows focused more on mecha and moe tend to generate more threads on 2ch.
What I find most interesting personally is the very close relationship between a show’s ranking on this list and the overall amount of posts and comments found on this site.
Truly, high-speed Internet’s spread and the lightning fast rate of fansubbing nowadays has closed a fair portion of the culture gap between Gaijin and Japanese otaku…

Even though I'm watching Toradora and Kannagi, I don't consider them particularly good, I watch them mostly for the DFC and comedy factor.
I hope this doesn't mean shows like Michiko to Hatchin and Mouryou no Hako (which I do consider worthy of attention) won't get enough support, I think anime like those two need to be encouraged.
Ga-Rei Zero again.
I must watch this.
"The Fist of the North Star spinoff, Raoh’s Tale, did not generate much discussion, as expected, and shoujo series Skip Beat’s doing poorly is also expected, as male-oriented shows focused more on mecha and moe tend to generate more threads on 2ch."
There are no girls on 2ch XDDD
Girls on the Internet, much like cake, are a lie!
Considering that there is quite a respectable amount of genuine girls frequenting Sankaku, that's a rather odd thing to say for a staff member.
That just increases the comedic value.
Looks like I don't get the joke then. I might have to play Portal one of these days, or go to 2ch more often. Or both.
Makes me wonder why shit like Kemeko and Kurogane even make it into that list. >_>
The best and most underrated show this season isn't even listed: Mouryo no Hako.
Underrated? More like sleep inducing.
So much mediocre random moe and ecchi anime without any serious plot there. -_-
The best series there are obviously mainly in the end and middle. Someone need to teach those 2channers that anime isn't ONLY about hawt characaters in daring poses...
and an example of such anime with good plots would be??
I've heard a lot of bad things about 2-channers, but since the top 3 on the list are also my top three, perhaps I have 1/1000000000000 of an iota more respect for them now ...
GA-REI and kannagi are both my faves and damn its already ending with a less expected episode...but thats the seasons ending NOT the actual ending of the series..just wished the could atleast extend kannagi episodes just a BIT more...1-15 perhaps..?
and Ga-rei...im super psyched about its next season..not that i know what it is..but browsing at its less adapted manga "might" give people the idea what to expect...
It's unlikely they'll adapt the manga; it's very generic and uninteresting. Best they just leave it with a prequel and forget the manga entirely.
Casshern is doing better than I expected. But One Outs is doing worse than expected. Really, fukumoto fans love it and it must have other watchers too.
Tales of the abyss beat Chaos;head :O wasnt expecting that, not that im unhappy about it XD
I'm rather wondering that Chaos Head is even so high up in comparision.
- Ga-Rei -Zero- ranks so highly... even as a rabid fans of Yomi, i'm sock and awe.
- plots in Toaru Majutsu no INDEX are really massive wallbangers. just watching it make me feel more stupider than i already am. good thing that Ga-Rei -Zero- rank higher than that.
- why do Shikabane Hime AKA rank lower than Erogane... sob sob T^T
- Raoh Gaiden... how the mighty have fallen.
I'm watching Skip Beat. It's good, if a tad bit obviously made by a woman, for women.
The reason, perhaps, why it hasn't been posted about here on Sankaku might be because I've yet to see a single post about it in the time I've been here. =D
Nice~! Some of my favorite anime are in the top of the list.
I wonder how many Tytania threads were discussing about the 9th episode...
Tytania has yet to pick up the pacing, I follow the show and is wondering will they be able to execute out a Legend of the Galatic Heroes type of anime
Some of these are surprising... but mainly I'm disappointed that some of the shows that I fansub so diligently seem to be fairly unpopular... :(
Damn shame Shikabane Hime didn't get a lot of spotlight. It had a charming Gainax glow.
Yeah that sounds about right.
What the deuce? Clannad After Story is not even on the radar. Anyone have thoughts on that? Is it not popular?
RTA: "Only new series are included, so no Gundam 00: 2nd Season, Nodame Cantabile Paris, etc."
I assume After Story falls under the "not included because it's a continuation of a series from a previous season" category.
Only new series are included, so no Gundam 00: 2nd Season, Nodame Cantabile Paris, etc.
Hyakko should have more threads, damnit.
Actually Hyakko did better than expected. If you see the titles above it, then it makes sense it isn't higher.
But it is sad a lot of the post are just things like "shit anime"...
Hyakko didn't make much of a splash, to be honest.
If you count the lazy-ass game being design as one...
Agreed
Not a big fan of Ga-Rei Zero myself, I'd definitely put Hyakko up a little higher if I were ranking it by my tastes.
Ga-Rai Zero won ALOT of points with the final (and well-executed) episode, but yeah, that doesn't exactly excuse most of the rest of the series just going for shock value.
Hopefully Linebarrel was receiving negative comments too. That series was just junk from the start.
Yes. altho the shock value worn of, bit by bit it started to make sense when you compare it to the Manga. Altho you KNOW what is going to happen, the way that they made it makes it a worthy prequel to the amazingly serious yet funny manga
Some of those should be higher and some should be lower (looking at Linebarrel) but what I expected overaall.
Ga-Rei Zero is easily the best anime of the season, and only Macross Frontier could pose a threat to it, when it comes to the "best anime of 2008" title.
So yea, I'm not so surprised about its high ranking :)
Man, Michiko to Hatchin, Hakushaku to Yousei, and Skip Beat are some of my favourites this season. Guess I'm just odd. Though Toradora is also at the top, so... I'm still odd.
Not ONE for Jigoku Shoujo: Mitsuganae?
The ranking only included brand new anime beginning in Fall 2008, as mentioned in the notes.
Ah. It's hard to tell whether shows like that are supposed to be sequels or just new seasons.
Kemeko DX and Today in 5-2 is so low ranked o.o Yet I love.
Wonder what would happen if you stuck Code Geass or Gundam 00 in there.
O SUNRISE, MABUSHII!!!
No Gundam 00: 2nd Season or Nodame Cantabile Paris...but Kyou no Go no Ni TV?
Only new series are included, so no Gundam 00: 2nd Season, Nodame Cantabile Paris, etc.
Read ffs.
Read my notes in bold text above the table.
