Urotsukidōji was created by Toshio Maeda, in 1986 and is an early example of erotic manga and anime. Before creating Urotsukidōji, Maeda had become infamous for his clear and frank depictions of sex and violence in his work. This is interesting, particularly if it implies he was solely responsible for the modern genre.
Two slight points of issue which concern me are the statement that "sensual scenes" were illegal - I wonder if it was as simple as this, as there is certainly a great deal of explicit porn from that period - and the issue of historical provenance - it's hard to believe he was not familiar with the works of Hokusai and others...
I have to say that while one or two of these are nice enough (the ones where the tentacles serve no purpose other than restraint and/or penis substitute), the vast majority are disturbing for a number of reasons.
I could never find an image of a woman in obvious physical pain to be in any way arousing, especially to the distressing levels displayed in some of these pictures. Even if they characters depicted aren't real it still strikes a bad note with me.
