Malaysian Cosplay – Comic Fiesta 2008

Recently we’ve seen an extensive selection of cosplay from various European countries, of quite varying quality; now we are presented with a selection from a South East Asian nation, Malaysia.
The event in question is Comic Fiesta 2008, held at Petaling Jaya near Kuala Lumpur.
As you may have noticed, passing judgment on the efforts of cosplayers is not something I am keen to do (at least not in the capacity of publisher), and frankly in this case there seems to be a wide variety on offer, making it difficult to separate failplay from winplay…

Compare to the cosplay coming from Finland, Germany and Italy, and of course Japan (not sure why the former Axis Powers are so well represented…).

And an extra note... the extra Malaysian cosplays are a mix of Singaporean and Malaysian group shots from Anime Fest Asia 2008
for some reason they look better than the japanese or any cosplayers in any country
well there were some good cosplays at some point but a lot of them were trying to hard to cosplay them and some are just ugly and fat
still reminds me though of the last anime convention people thought that i was in cosplay with my regular spring clothes of black t-shirt,black cargo pants, black sweater and black shoes...practically i was wearing my normal black cloths cause i dont need to coordinate with my style and people thought i was cosplaying somebody made me laugh though

Some of these seem ok, if you don't look too closely or at the face.
That always seems to be the killer for 3D, at least for me anyway.
I get over it and just scroll down so their face isn't showing, then continue my "business".
Danny Choo cosplay... I actually missed that.
Hmm, more winplay than failplay in my opinion. Seems better than most American cosplay, just slightly better than the Europeans, about the same as the Japanese, but I'm wondering if this is representative of Malay (Singaporean) cosplay, or if this is the better stuff.
Malays are not equivalent to Singaporean. malaysia is also not just made up of malays.
Malay is not a shorthand for Malaysian btw. Neither is Malay a shorthand for Singaporean.
i'd say this is the better stuff out of the bunch. Winplay rate at CF08 is up to 60%.
Well, most of the failplay obviously still new into the scene, not having proper props.

There is, but there is a collective discrimination against Naruto and Bleach. The event have lots of them, the photographer shunned them out of sheer discrimination.

We choose to ignore them. I even refused to take photo during the Bleach group during the group competition D:

yep. I know there are *TONS* of Bleach and Naruto fans in Mal. Especially those under 15...and the final fantasy costumes? I mean they've been people wearing it every year there! Be creative ppl.
Physics of Malaysians are quite similar to Japanese, so the comparison is not surprising.
Wish I went to the Comic Fiesta, damn Asean University Games, all I got was sore muscles.......
Malaysian here, quite surprise by the quality of cosplay in my own country.Well done! Wish I have the time for the comic fiesta, so much work =(.
same here i'm a malaysian too kinda happy to see the quality level of the cosplay.i will go to the comic fiesta next year for sure.

as a malaysian, I'm left speechless.
and speaking of malays, I have yet to see a malay person cosplaying. but considering that we're brown and most anime/video game characters are either caucasian or at least fair skinned, not much option there I suppose.
well we have to keep in mind too that some should never cosplay . . . (*refers to failplay)
There were 85% Chinese, 13% Malays and 2% others who were cosplaying that day.
