On the evening of Dec. 23, reports were made of an extremely foul odor in front of the Akihabara train station. Fearing a biological terror attack, a small army of police, fire fighters and chemical experts were dispatched to the scene, only to discover the true culprit – a smelly sewer system.
Among the municipal agencies dispatched were the Tokyo Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the Tokyo Police Counter-Biological Unit and the regular fire fighting and police departments.
Certainly, fears of a repeat of the infamous Tokyo Subway Sarin attack in 1995 must be in part attributable for the respectable response by city officials.
