2channers are currently amusing themselves at the expense of the rest of the world by looking at what sort of manga they are buying.
Even if we restrain ourselves from making national characterisations on the basis of the manga being bought, as is rather tempting in the case of Germany, the results are interesting:

The US at least looks to have a respectable, if unremarkable, set of bestsellers, as does France and to a lesser extent the UK. Pokemon exerts a hold over the English speaking nations, as does Naruto, it seems…
Is there some reason for this remarkable performance by Germany? Sex and how to draw manga? Or are we simply to assume an idiosyncratic or deliberately slanted source used?
An alternative for Germany is provided by our own Anonymous:
1. One Piece
2. Naruto
3. Detective Conan
4. Battle Angel Alita Last Order
5. Inu Yasha
The date likely differs, and probably it excludes the “How-to” volumes popular everywhere, so don’t get too excited.
Compare to the 2008 ranking of manga sold in Japan… It should be said this set is not on the same order of reliability as those, so take care in interptreting it.

hell yes Futari Echi = AWESOME!
it surprises me that there are so many how to draw manga books there, although you do tend to see them everywhere. i do question the methodology here - how to draw manga books arnt really manga, and neither are things like the spirited away art book. also, where do these figures come from?
apart from UK and Germanys listsings, its as i would expect (especialy USA/France), a strong showing for things aimed at younger males. That does seem to be where the main readership volume is, although i would have expected fruits basket to be higher.
youd be surprised.
i live in germany and a lot of the mang coming out here are for girls and most of the manga-style artists here are also women.
also did i mention that although the shelves of german mangastores are overflowing with yaoi there have only been 2 yuri releases?
Lack of male interest manga results in selfmade lolicon. Rule 34 also applies.
I'm surprised to see so many 'how to draw x' books up there, given how awful they are at actually teaching you to draw anything.
Amusing, yes. Someone seems to have too much fun with Germany, though. Ranking on the top should be One Pice, Naruto, Bleach, Detective Conan and Inu Yasha.
Most of the drawing books don't really look like the would actually teach you to draw well...
Awesome to see the French have One Piece and City Hunter in the top 5. Viva la France! But for some I reasoned I LOL'ed at the Deutchland-ers' list.
Germans want to learn how to draw hentai.
LOL! Well that's what it looks like...
<- German
<- Thinks about trying to learn drawing Manga
<- obvious reasons... btw Nekomimi <3
LOL....
2nd that.......
Somethings not right with the German figures...
The List should feature yaoi or usual shonen jump manga...
I dont know where they took the figures from but the german distributers usually keep quiet about their sales.Do the how to draw manga books actually qualify as manga?
In the end: who cares?
This may be why the list ends up like that... the sources aren't clear so as you can imagine this can't be taken seriously like an Oricon ranking.
I am wondering if they perhaps used Amazon or similar...
Well, sadly ANIMEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX® ™ think that they can draw mangas with that shit, and because each ANIMEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX® ™ fag read a different yaoi (there is a dreadful huge amount of them in Krautland) and all buy the same "how to draw" shit, these stuff become "popular". Of course, the manuals are from german people to, who REALLY REALLY cannot draw.
I hate to admit it, but you are right.
i live in germany, i loled seeing this but had to see for myself. Looked it up in 3 major anime/manga sites in germany and their lists are pretty much the same
1. One Piece
2. Naruto
3. Detective Conan
4. Battle Angel Alita Last Order (happy to see this in the top 5)
5. Inu Yasha
so someone made a good joke.
Thanks, I made a little update.
Recently started with Futari Ecchi(Love Story in english) and I must admit, it has greatly surprised me!
Someone make a joke.. right? 'How to draw" can't be a top seller.
I lol'd.
Still, Berserk is second in America, not bad. And not a One Piece or Bleach in sight, although that fucking Naruto still has a stranglehold on Downs children it seems.
Germany and sex-related manga/how to draw manga(which may or may not include sex)
DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!
What is this X Complete? *goes to Google*
It's a CLAMP title for anyone wondering.
Isn't the english name for Futari Ecchi something like "Manga Sutra"?
That would explain all... I'm willing to bet even non-anime perverts would be willing to buy something with that title. XD
Anyways, a fun list
Wtf China ? Doraemon and Advanced Manga for Beginners ?
Wha'chu talkin' bout Mem? Doraemon is the shit, and Eiyuu Densetsu FFFFFFFFFFF-
I as a Brit are pleased at the list produced for the UK if only for the fact that it does not contain f*****g Na**o and despite the stigma that Pokemon has produced to many a fan - the manga is quite respectable in comparison to the series.
The only thing I don't like is the fact that Death Note is on top but that's my personal preferences.
I salute you, because Nausicaa is on that list.
I have faith in humanity again, at least UK is not full of Narutards, like some other country.
Why does japan ignore australia?
Completely -_-
You mean, there's a country called Australia?
I think he's talking about Austria.
is that ment to be a joke?...
how nice >_>
Roflcopter Sex and How to Draw FTW
In the last 10 years I have never seen anyboy buy any of these "How to draw Manga"-Books in Germany.
What I've seen is mass buyings of Dragonball, One Piece, Naruto, Inuyasha and -to some extent- Bleach.
I guess they are mostly bought by parents who want to abuse their child's love for manga to unlock that 'hidden artistic potential' that every parent is desperately looking for in their kids in order to justify procreating and giving birth to them.
I see your point, but there can be nothing wrong with parents that encourage their children to draw ero-manga, right?
Three thumbs up for Futari Ecchi!
To all the doubters of "How to draw" titles being top sellers, I'm afraid I can confirm they are top sellers - if you check the Amazon database, you can see that such titles persistently rank in the very top of the "manga" category.
For Poland:
1. Naruto
2. Death Note
3. Bleach (not released yet, but hype is big)
4. Full Metal Alchemist
5. Angel Sanctuary
Manga might be nice for naruto. But animation sucks!! They stand still and start to share each others thoughts and techniques in the middle of a battle WTF. And the episode which should have been full of fight sequences is full of Still images and camera panning around with voice dub for 20min and just 6-7min fight sequence. Is this what u call animation Fuck this shit. I ain't naruto fan any more.
I'm from germany and that result is embarrassing... Well, fortunately Futari Ecchi is in top 5 (i buy it too). In Germany it call Manga Love Story.
even more of a reason to live in japan it seems....
Berserk is number 1 for me. Then comes Naruto.
Sadly, there was no 2ch comments for us to read. :(
Berserk in second place brings much joy to my heart
I totally had that Let's Find Pokemon book - got it when I was in elementary/early middle school. They even made a sequel to it in 2000.
They released a "complete" version (pressuably with both the original and sequel) in 2006 that had the original book's cover..so I'm assuming that's what's on this list... but, what's it doing on charts in 2008? How bizarre...
It's a rather cute book though, that's for sure.
I love the people nerdraging on onepiece in the japanese article, even though it is good
GTFO Naruto
Sorely lacking in sources but eh, interesting I guess..
