Tentacular assault oppai manga To Love-Ru looks to be posing a problem to puritanical foreign markets, as its much vaunted ecchiness results in the Hong Kong edition being relegated to 18+ ero-manga status, and the Singapore version sold as the censored serialised version used as a mere preview in Japan.
The attractive black obi version is the Hong Kong version, and the other the Singapore version, both presented in Chinese.
The Singapore version can’t be bothered to include the inner cover picture.
Below, the all important contents; simply put, the Hong Kong version is the one with the nipples, identical to the Japanese edition.
In Hong Kong it looks as if they opted to make this a full 18+ ero-manga, hence the nipple preservation.
Of course, in Japan it is published alongside the likes of Naruto and marketed to children as a healthy tentacle raep starter ero-manga along the same lines as shota raep anime Kanokon.
Perhaps inevitable given the illiberal nature of the two countries concerned, but still disheartening for international fans (or at least Chinese speakers).
Interesting to see how the localisation of other versions goes, but I dare say this is a foregone conclusion…

Well if I see it at my local comic store if and when it gets an English license, I'll just ask them to take off the clear wrap so I can see if it's censored lol
Yeah Negima is all in clear wrap as well haha.
From what I have seen and from all the times I buy manga in HK, the people there doesn't enforce the +18 rule at all. I mean I have seen kids aged 10 buy mangas like To-love-ru and get away with it.
To Love Ru (VF : To Love Trouble) is not censored in French =P
lol that is why I learned Japanese and order ToLoveRu Tankoubons from Japan. Censors look completely unnatural.
you are full of shit. you didn't learn japanese. taking a few classes doesn't amount to shit. you can't read toloveru in its native language at all.
you probably just read the scanslations online. dick.
It all depends on the culture and the society of one country...
If ever To Love Ru gets localized here...it will be censored and it will even get some reaction from the church lol
There goes the good stuffs..
Wait until u see thai's release
I hope this comes out with every thing in Australia!
According to Australian law, its classified under Child Pornography....and yes, I am going to court for possession of child pornography for having doujins. O.o....
The law states that if it looks and depicts any material of a child doing anything suggestive will allow the book thrown at you. And yes, that means 99% of everything media that comes out of Japan is illegal or filtered by Madman and funanimation.....
There is a new commandment that should be added to the 10 commandments: Love thy MicroSD card.
So the manga shipped in Singapore looks like the anime shipped in Japan then?
Why must i be born in Singapore...
The German edition seems to be uncensored and includes nipples. It's being published by Tokyopop Germany under the name "Love Trouble" and sells for 6,50 EUR (about 8.92 USD) per tankoubon.
Age restriction of the German edition is "16 and up", btw. It's being sold in clear shrink-wrap.
sexo
It doesn't look like the singapore version is using the censored serialised version because there should be stategically placed foam over her bits in the third pic. Looks like they've used the japanese uncensored volumes and just rubbed out the offending details. The censored serialised version is better imo.
I like singapore cover using original title in english but didn't like the Censorship.
Why do the speech bubbles in the two penultimate pictures seem to vastly differ?
Simplified Chinese and traditional chinese, the meanings are still the same
Cantonese vs Mandarin.
simplified chinese and the.. other form of chinese writing.. complex? no the words on the tip of my tongue but i cant think of it haha sorry
traditional
Not just simplified; even the grammar is slightly different. Conveys the same (general) meaning, though.
One is Hong Kong sub one is Singapore sub
Different "subs" ^^;
Both bubbles mean the same, just different translators.
Additionally, Hong Kong uses traditional chinese while Singapore uses its own version of simplified chinese (somewhat different from the PRC)
If/when Viz releases the series here in the US, it'll get neutered just like I''s.
Good thing I'm already collecting the original tankoubons so I don't miss out on anything.
Viz wouldn't release it. Be much safer with Del Rey or Yen Press.
But Viz is the company that published most (I think all) Shonen Jump animes/mangas. Unless they learned their lesson w/ I"S (which DID get uncensored....after 10 volumes), I doubt we'll get the uncensored version...
God, I hope so...
glad the nipples are there.
and this is why I love Hong Kong
Though by Hong Kong's archaic and outdated law, the publishers had to place them under plastic wrappings, most of the manga shopkeepers I've seen usually have enough common sense to not enforce it all the time if they know damn well the series isn't exactly that +18.
FYI, even certain Naruto and Bleach volumes in HK are labelled as 18+ if the intensity of the battles become a bit violent, but still considered "too violent" for HK censors.
Funny thing is... I find it more obscene to remove the nipples rather than leaving them.
i hear that, especially if they keep the nipples on men intact, seriously why are they there they dont serve a purpose
Similar things HAPPEN in Thai version of To Love-Ru. The publisher (pirated one) have to censor by either the "Sound Alphabets" in addition to the censotred steam .... Otherwise, the publishers and the owners of manga stores will be in SERIOUS troubles with Thugs in Khakhi (derogatory term for Police).
BTW, To love ru has been PUNNED by Thai punsters as "Rubbing the Love Holes" or the "Good" manga due to lots of "Cup D" pairs to boot with right amount of fanservices.
Oh, Thai manga readers have given more positive responses to To love ru over Kanokon despite of the fact that Thai translation Kanokon has been pubulished with copyright ... just simply oveloaded fanservices that even make some Thai Otaku go nausea.
