Record of Lodoss War fans will doubtless already be familiar with the legendary opening song 奇跡の海 / Kiseki no Umi / Sea of Miracles; anyone who isn’t familiar can of course listen to it below. But all will likely be interested to hear that the song has been given a variety of interesting alternative Vocaloid versions, the best of which you can compare below:
The original version is performed by singer-seiyuu 坂本真綾 / Maaya Sakamoto, and written by 菅野よう子 / Youko Kanno; this also includes an instrumental:
Player 1
The next version is performed by none other than virtual idol sensation and Vocaloid Hatsune Miku:
Player 2
We also hear an interesting duet of Kagamine challengers Rin and Ren:
Player 3
Next is a superb quintet of no less than five different Vocaloids:
Player 4
By way of an extra, here is an English fan-sung version which displays some talent:
Player 5
You can follow all of these up on Nico. All the other Vocaloids are featured there too.
Let us evaluate these different versions collectively:

I was never a big fan of Kiseki no Umi. though that may have been because the B-side to that single was Active Heart, which is one the most stellar performances that young Maaya could ever afford
Youko Kanno and Maaya Sakamoto can write and sing all of my anime OPs as far as I'm concerned.
Mayaa is the best, ive know this song for a while, ive listened to it many times...
I found Miku to be interesting, being my first time listening to a virtual idol, i think she is quite good, a little synthetic but sounds good, a little to close to mayaa's voice...
The duo wasnt quite bad either...
The quintet sucked, it doesn't sound good to me, save for the art it is bad...
As for the English it might be the worst, hate dubs, specially English dubs and this is really awful...
Origial - lovely
Miku - i was prepared for that squeaky "kawaii modo" version. but i am surprised, its quite nice.
Rin and Ren - still not fond of these Vocaloids, especially Ren. it was alright though. who ever did this, managed to make them sound good and balanced in tone.
5 Vocals - too robotic when they go at once.
it sounds pretty for a while
Ama English - she did pretty good, she has a nice tone, but didnt seem to hold notes very well.
Thankyou for this article - I've become quite addicted to the Vocaloid versions, so much so that I've ripped to MP3 and will add to my normal music playlists.
Something about the electronic voices clearly appeals to me (although I see it doesn't to the people above).
usually I like miku songs, but this one is horrible...
The original version >>>>> all.
The rest are just offence for Lodoss - the great, fantasy anime.
I've heard Maaya's version so many times that any other version just doesn't sound right to me. Lodoss OVA also had a pretty nice OP song too~
This OP song is one of my all-time favourites. Too bad the Lodoss TV series sucked major monkey balls.
If I had to pick the best one, it'd be Maaya's version by far. Hatsune Miku's version wasn't actually that bad, but still sounded too electronic-y sounding for me. The Rin & Ren and quintet versions were so brutal I stopped listening after 10 seconds. The English wasn't that bad, but I probably would've enjoyed it more if it was mixed better.
And that's my 2 cents.
I like them all except the one sung by the twins. The ameteur one is pretty good.
Maaya all the way! Sorry, but i'm an old fashioned otaku girl that grow up in the 80's, so i don't like so much all the virtual idols business. I prefer her voice over thousands of Miku's, Rin's, Ren's and others.
So, this is the idea you have in the other thread, about stylish openings? Lodoss is amazing, not only the story and characters, the music is so great. For the tv series and the ovas.
Greetings ;)
miku voice its ok, but her voice its way too deep for the song, the continuity of the words are well made too, they need to do a v2 of that song on miku imo.
and the original its good too, hard to compete with, even miku have a hard one with her
english one sounds very nice :D
Hmm...Miku's is great, but I'm going to have to side with Maaya.
However, my favorite is listening to them both at the same time, Maaya and Miku make a great duet team haha.
