Here are some interesting comparison images meant to show the influence of the man, Yamakan, who supervised the creation of the now iconic Haruhi ED, amongst others, and the manner in which he developed his work.
Much of it appears to be from a 2005 film, Linda Linda Linda, though I think the details of this less interesting that the comparison itself.
Of course, we can still ask ourselves the question, “tribute, parody, or rip-off?”

Watched Linda Linda Linda but it nver came to me that there are these similarities to Haruhi.
So I was just looking through the internet, hers a good compilation I just found, recycled dance moves. Its rediculous, lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jQpiXaXmLg
linda linda linda was a cute lil coming of age / lost in translation movie, with the singer being a korean transfer student.
Haruhi is nothing but a parody! The whole thing makes fun of almost every anime stereotype there is and also steals many scenes from many different shows/movies.
pfff what a shameless ripoff
Nice tribute that Haruhi makes to Linda Linda.
Too bad IRL most people look like the lesbian bass guitarist in Haruhi.
wasn't that Yamakan guy feted to be a genius at coordinating and choreographing all that dance before?
so now that he's proven to have copied it, would it harm his reputation irrevocably?
Where'd that one screenshot of the sleeping girl come from?
interesting but i'll treat this as a tribute more than a rip-off
It is clearly a tribute. They didn't try to hide the similarities. It makes no sense to copy even the writing on the window on the last example.
Typo, that's the iconic Haruhi ED, not OP, of course.
Seemed a good ep for parody, as it also included the anime band "ENOZ", a tribute to a RL J-Pop band called "ZONE"
Thanks, keep making these OP/ED mistakes...
I especially enjoyed the first one.
Now I know where the director got his idea for Haruhi. If Naruto got away with that kind of direction, I think any anime will.
IIRC, Naruto copied a complete fight scene from Cowboy Bebop the Movie, and perhaps even Jackie Chan - there are .gif files over the internet that can show you such 'coincidences'.
But I wouldn't really call it a rip-off, rather a tribute. I think there's a fine line with ripping something off and paying tribute to something.
Think of MS Gundam SEED Destiny's revamped designs of original Zeon suits.
This is too much of a coincidence. I think it's pretty obvious that the Haruhi anime is paying tribute to Linda Linda Linda. There is also a very superficial similarity between the plot of Linda Linda Linda, with the absence of the singer, and this episode of Haruhi. When did these screenshot comparisons first appear?
First time I saw the circulating the Internet was about a year ago. I'm pretty sure the parts regarding the Linda Linda Linda film is a tribute/parody, it's just like you say, to much of a coincidence...
what you guys are forgetting is now at endless eights, they are parodying "Back to the future"...
Every scifi series has had its own Groundhog Day episode.
its not really a parody of back to the future its more of a parody of Groundhog Day or the star trek ep "Cause and Effect" the latter mainly I think...
I like both Haruhi and Linda Linda Linda, but daymn!!
Wouldn't be the first time Kyoani "borrowed" something. It's kind of like rotoscoping only without deliberately drawing over a live action frame.
isnt one of the members of base ball bear in that movie?
<3's both, who cares if it's a parody, or a tribute. Watching one, then the other makes it that much more fun when you see the stories unfold and see the similarities.
So, in essence The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya copied from these other sources?
Damn I guess i need to watch Linda Linda Linda.
