Clannad After Story Cut - 16:9 vs 4:3

Phenomenally well received romance anime Clannad After Story looks to have fared poorly on the station chopping block, but for once it isn’t ridiculous efforts at censorship at fault.

Instead, we find that digital satellite broadcaster BS-i (at least) will be broadcasting the anime in full widescreen format, with a comparison between the tightly cropped and widescreen versions readily revealing the anime was designed to be viewed in 16:9 and not 4:3, which is how it was shown on all terrestrial stations.

Some unfortunate characters literally don’t get a look in:

The snag is that for some despair inducing reason BS-i is broadcasting the anime three weeks later than the other stations (starting October 23rd, what you see above is the aired preview).

Clannad fans do not seem to be able to win this battle, save by buying the DVD (which is currently locking up the Amazon DVD charts with preorders).

Another DVD marketing initiative?

    IIRC, didn't the first season also get the ol' Pan 'n'Scan treatment too? First season of Code Geass also.

    That's affirmative.

    At least 16:9 (1.77:1) is closer to 4:3 (1.33:1) than, say, 1.85:1 or even 2.35:1 are (typical 35mm (typically anamorphic)/70mm (typically orthographic, though some anamorphic formats exist) widescreen film aspect ratios) which fare even worse when given a pan-and-scan treatment.

    They do it a variety of anime, it doesn't mean people automatically know about each instance though.

    What's with the whining? You're making it sound like CLANNAD ~AS~ is the first anime to get this treatment, while MANYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY did before (including the previous CLANNAD). Plus it actually gets the widescreen version on TV in a timely manner.

    Aa Megami-sama season one, Elfen Lied & Code Gayass (to name a few) didn't get widescreen before DVD.

    Your inability to correctly interpret language is unfortunate. At no point in the post did I express any personal concern over the issue, so I fail to see how it could possibly be considered "whining". In fact there is barely even any disapproval in the post...

    I am reporting the issue as it concerns fans, and there are many who are unhappy about it. This is an objective fact.

    I wouldn't have minded if they just started later for broadcasting in widescreen.
    Clannad is definitely a show that should only be viewed in 16:9 format. In my experience, it seems the reason for the 4:3 is that the terrestial station doesn't have the capabilities for a HD format. Thus the reason for 4:3.
    Maybe it's some marketing ploy from BS-i as well?
